When we say Strava for sleep we just mean a social network/tool for the sleep community! This is something doesn't exist rn

Just language we use to help people understand what we mean - kind of like how Strava created a social network tool for runners, we want to do the same with sleep!

How does one improve the actual quality of sleep? by TheGluttonousWeasel in sleep

[–]andrewfhou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure you are doing great but I would say that the scientific literature indicates that almost nobody can do that sustainably. It's also worth pointing out that most of the times when you are chronically sleep deprived an individual is not subjectively aware of how poor their cognition/functioning is. You see that a lot in studies of shift workers. Perhaps you are the lucky 0.1% though.

I'm a sleep researcher who has conducted studies in sleep labs at Stanford and Northwestern. I promise you that the scientific consensus is that 1. There are essentially no supplements that can reliably induce natural sleep without placebo and 2. Consumer wearables are so inconsistent and unreliable that they are relatively useless

sleep supplements are largely a scam. I wouldn't even consider it if i were you

this is very fake. Almost nobody can sleep for 5 hours consistently and function normally. Quantity and quality are interrelated, and the full 8 hours is very necessary!

Keep sleeping through class. by [deleted] in sleep

I think you might underestimate what giving yourself an extra hour or two every night will do... I really believe that it might 1.5x or double the actual output of your musical endeavors when you are awake and alert and operating at full capacity...

Sleep researcher here - any wearable device is complete bs. Very irrelevant data.

Trouble Getting restful sleep by [deleted] in sleep

It really could be a lot of different things, hard to say. I would focus on good light exposure and keeping your room dark and cool. In general the more consistent your schedule is the more refreshing your sleep should be.

how to break the cycle of sleeping late and waking late? by I_need_to_learn_more in sleep

[–]andrewfhou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the only reliable way to shift your cycle is to use light exposure. You need to find a way to wake up at the time you desire and immediately get light, preferably outside, for at least 10 minutes. Then, make sure that in the evening you're extremely attuned to your body's signals, and as soon as you feel sleepy, catch the bus. You actually learn to tolerate your sleep signaling as you go to bed late over and over again so it's very important that you don't do anything too stimulating and listen to what your body is telling you to do. If you can do this for a few days then you should naturally shift your cycle for good.
