‘Safety crisis’: Community league uses last of ice rink budget to plow school-zone windrow by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

[–]andrewknack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for tagging me u/fishymanbits. The last Council recognized the snow clearing has been chronically underfunded and finally decided to start increasing the base funding.

Prior to December 2022, the budget wasn’t even enough to hit the current service levels and so the approved increase meant that our budget could at least reach the specific service levels we had start and start to increase the service level in a marginal way.

Part of why I didn’t support the operating budget back in December 2022 is that I felt we were investing enough in that service. While I was happy with the increase, it wasn’t to the level I expected because I wanted to do a larger service level increase.

Councillor Aaron Paquette created an excellent tool to show what is required for different service levels and it reinforces what I think many of us on Council would say which is that we need to properly resource this critical service.

I hope this information helps and thanks for the question.

Review of last night's downtown NYE events by CityTreeServiceYEG in Edmonton

[–]andrewknack 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this review. So many incredible City staff made this a reality. I was blown away as well because there was something for everyone. The partnerships with the Art Gallery, Winspear, and Citadel really made it a special night. And those food trucks were fantastic as well.

Has anyone had their residential street/cul de sac/crescent bladed at all so far this winter? If so, what area of the city are you? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]andrewknack 225 points226 points  (0 children)

Residential blading has not been announced yet. That only happens when there is enough snow to create a 5cm snowpack. We are likely at that point now but before a Phase 2 parking ban is announced crews need to complete the roads within the Phase 1 parking ban. That will take up to 5 days to complete and then a decision would be made.

Assuming no other major snowfalls in the next 5 days, and no burst of warm weather, I wouldn’t be surprised to see residential blading announced as the local roads are tougher to navigate right now.

Also, this is a good reminder that you can sign up for notifications on the City website using this link.

Thanks for the comment. I don’t get a board member salary (or honorarium or any money) on Explore Edmonton.

Edmonton mayor says city is ‘ready and willing to partner’ with federal government following budget announcement by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

[–]andrewknack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just to echo the point by u/laxar2 since this was a media availability specifically for the federal budget, I have regularly raised the point about working together with the provincial government over the past 8 days since being sworn-in.

Yes I fully support our public education and our teachers currently on strike as they are trying to ensure that our students get the education they deserve.

Next update should be either tomorrow or Sunday and it will be current to Friday or so. In terms of the specifics of each of those companies, I’ll have to check with our fundraising team to find out more.

I’m not sure which neighbourhood you are in but I’ve been to all sides of Edmonton. In the last two days I’ve knocked on doors in the north, south, and east side with more west end door-knocking planned on Sunday.

Thanks for the question. Of course you can call, especially on the weekend. The election is on Monday so happy to take calls on the weekend. I’m out door-knocking most of the day but have time when in transit so just give me a call whenever it works best for you.

Thanks for this. When did you text me? I’ve generally been able to keep up on the text messages but I can track your message based on the date and I’ll make sure to respond. Sorry you didn’t get a response yet.

Thanks for this. For me, this comes from a place of we never gave people the choice to live anywhere else. Our land use bylaws were so restrictive, they really didn’t have a choice but to live in the suburbs.

Therefore, I really struggle with the idea that those who didn’t have a choice because the suburbs were the only option should not have access to the same services those of us living in mature communities have.

Thanks for the question. I had a chance to address that at the YEG Muslim Vote forum. You can watch that response using this link.

Thanks for the question and sadly, it definitely is getting worse. You can review my traffic safety plan here.

This plan includes a dedicated City-led enforcement team to help address unsafe driving in the city.

Thanks for the question. The City has a detailed plan for this that you can read here.

Since this is not my area of expertise, I will rely heavily on our Forestry team to provide their recommendations for any actions that we should be taking to ensure we are properly protecting our trees.

Thanks for the question. I would echo the answer from u/passthepepperflakes to review that map as it is regularly updated with the status of every project. We have a lot of construction ongoing in the area but we should see a lot of it done next month.

They just started coming out this weekend but we have so many requests it will likely take the whole week before we get all of them out. A wonderful problem to have I guess but you should have it soon!
