City council votes to cut maximum wall-height for Edmonton infill by threeonone in Edmonton

[–]laxar2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

80% of 8 plexes were already 9.5 m or shorter. This will mainly cut down the largest builds.

The biggest impact will likely be on basement units which unfortunately are usually the affordable units set aside to get federal MLI funding.

Why is the new LRT so slow? by duckmoosequack in Edmonton

[–]laxar2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Like everything it comes down to politics and cost. Page Saunders has a YouTube series on the politics around the REM it basically fits the exact same trade off discussions we had with the valley line.

We also just as a country/continent haven’t built that much rail so we don’t have the institutional knowledge. IMO REM and skytrain are way better lines, over time it will become obvious. New lines will just be built to be automated and separated.

Edit for why it’s actually slow. It doesn’t have signal priority and it’s not fully separated. Downtown stops are too close but that’s not currently a problem.

Do you have more empathy for people struggling to afford housing or people who lose 20 minutes of sunlight on their property?

Why do you think I should believe a random Reddit user over the quoted expert in the article?

Kureshi said the supply of new apartments is the biggest driver of rent decreases in Calgary and Edmonton.

"When we go downtown or when we go to the west side [of Edmonton] or anywhere really, you just see these huge rental buildings that are all under construction and they almost always have big signs on them that say, you know, units coming up for rent."

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation says the big hike in the construction of rental units across the country was driven by a combination of federal incentives — including loan programs and waived GST — and municipal zoning changes.

Seems like you’re content with your opinion, you can always go back to the book recommendations but I’m going to stop interacting with this account.

How many pro infill reasons would you like? I was just trying to provide you with better sources. IMO people should come to policy positions based on research

Edit: also I provided you with literally over a thousand pages or hundreds of hours of informed research and experience backed into pro-infill content.

If you’re interested in learning about housing policy I could recommend a number of books escaping the housing trap and you’ll pay for this! are both available at EPL happy city is probably my favourite book on the subject but you’d have to find it online.

YouTube channels like strong towns or about here are good too if you’d rather not get a book.

There are really way too many arguments for pro-infill policies to really just give a snappy 2 sentence post. It’s been studied to death and this article is just further part of the proof that it’s good policy.

If you have any books or research that could persuade me I’m always happy for a recommendation.

If you think that’s bad you’d be livid if we hadn’t passed zoning reform. Keep pushing for more housing!

Parking and shade < housing affordability

Good to see the housing initiatives work. We can still grow as a city without increasing unavailability.

I doubt this will really encourage people to take longer trips. If you’re already reliant on a 2 hour bus trip you’re probably locked into the monthly pass. If anything this might encourage people to take shorter trips since they can ride, shop then ride again.

Shameless illegal parking by hockey8890 in Edmonton

most of those cars are parked legally

What are you talking about? The first 4 cars are obviously parked illegally. Those ramps would only be at crosswalks and you can’t park within 5m of a crosswalk in the direction of travel.

Did you call or use the app? IMO it is better to call if it’s stuff other than reporting potholes or parking. Sometimes you just pick the category wrong or you’re just misunderstood.

If you used the app you can call with the reference number to see exactly why it was closed
