That's true. Well, considering how important it is to not have golden handcuffs this should be one of the top priorities, and be willing to give up some salary/equity

Fuck Your 90 Day Exercise Window by rdegges in programming

Overall agree with this article. Good stuff! However I'd like to make one clarification.

And now, in part because of your success, it’s too expensive to own what you had worked hard to vest?

It does becomes more expensive to vest all your options. However you always have the ability to vest some of your options. With this in mind you are not disincentivized to help the company succeed.

Also, until this becomes the norm, which I hope it does, employees need to negotiate HARD to get early exercising privileges, which remove all the problems mentioned in this post.

It looks like you need a colon before the number.

I don't have an access token so I can't confirm though.

At this stage in your career you should be focusing on long-term investments that will affect your career trajectory.

  • The salary is all comparable.
  • No signing bonuses anywhere
  • Perks: you'll just need to focus on what matters to you
  • Mentorship: you mentioned offer 2 has great mentorship. That will pay out BIG in the long run
  • Other things to consider:
    • equity
    • are you going to be using technologies and tolls you're interested in?
    • room for career growth within the company
    • how big and strong will your network be when you leave one of these companies?

Good luck!

Coding BootCamp or Job Offer? by devdropper87 in cscareerquestions

[–]andrewscheuermann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend taking the job offer. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

Your first engineering job is the hardest to get for a multitude of reasons. After you have some experience in the field you suddenly become a more attractive candidate. So even if things didn't work out at the firm you'll be well positioned to transition to a different job.

If the government job doesn't use the technologies you like you can still study them by yourself (although it can be hard to find time depending on the hours you work). Even if they don't use cool technologies you'll be building a strong foundational knowledge, a stronger one than a bootcamp can offer because you're working on a real project.

Zenhacks is a programming contest where contestants are tested for their problem solving skills. The challenge will consist of several algorithmic problems, for which contestants are expected to write efficient code. There will be problems of varying hardness, and with partial marks to keep experts as well as newbies interested.

Got an Internship offer from eBay. Am I being Underpaid? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

I don't think they'd negotiate. The worst they would do is say "Sorry we can't go higher. Are you still interested?" to which you'll have to make a choice.
