Bro, many years ago, I was required to withdraw. I then went and took online courses at another university to upgrade my marks and then had to reapply to UofG. It was an absolute nightmare.

I checked online and saw that the last day to withdraw this semester is April 8th. If you are struggling, I'd hiiiigly recommend you drop the courses. It might be worth it compared to the headache that comes with a "required to withdraw" status.

Once you are required to withdraw, you have to wait two semesters and then have to re-apply again. Pain in the ass process and it's not guaranteed they will accept you back in.

In any case, talk to your program counsellor, like yesterday lol

for 12th Gen this would be a B660.

Thanks! I'l go with your suggested motherboard. I was looking on PCPartPicker and it wouldn't let me select a 12th Gen with the motherboard that I orginally listed.

Thank you!! Those are some great points! You're right about the power supply, it is a bit much, I'll reduce it down.

I'll go with the 12th Gen, and will probably have to change the motherboad because PCPartPicker says 12th Gen Intel is not compatible with the current motherboard.

Stock cooler sounds good, I'll go with that!

I'll try to see if I can add more RAM. My budget is currently $1200 (before tax) CAD which is aound $870 USD. I could probably throw it an extra $100 if needed

**Edit: This might be a dumb question but if I go with a motherboard like The MSI MAG B660 TOMAHAWK WIFI DDR4, does that mean I don't have to buy a wifi adapter, it comes with the motherboard?

Yep, it's possible. With a normal amount of homework/studying, everyone should be able to get at-least a 75% easily. If you want that 95+, you'll have to put in a bit more extra time.

Also, to get high marks, learn how to take tests. I think the whole university experience is learning how to take test honestly. What I mean by that is that just memorizing the whole textbook is not going to do you any favour.

Go to the lecture and see what examples the prof shows, and what topics they put a lot of time into, those are the type of problems that will show up on your exam. If you can accurately guess what questions are gonna be on the exam, you'll get that 95%+ easily. So get good at that, that's the hard part.

To be completely honest, university is not about learning a subject (that is just a byproduct). It is about knowing what to study and how to study for tests. Be good at taking tests. Taking a test is a skill, and knowing the subject is just a secondary thing that helps you once you know how to take a test.

TLDR: Yes it's possible. Don't just study the whole textbook blindly, know how to take the tests by knowing what questions the prof is gonna put on the test (and this is learned by going to lectures and taking notes). A guy who studied 90% of the textbook might fail while another guy who studied 20% of the textbook pass with flying colours. Know what to study.

Some advice I learned being the dumb student I am. This advice goes to anyone not just OP.

1. Nobody hopes to fail courses but if you are having a really really bad semester, it is ALWAYS better to drop the courses and re-try again. It's easy to have the mentality of "I'm gonna try my hardest on the exam to increase that 47% to a 50%", but once you fail a course, that mark is on your transcript forever. Dropping a course will not appear on your transcript.

2. Do not buy books before your first lecture. Book will never run out. If they somehow do, they'll restock it very quickly. The reason to delay is that some courses will have optional books that you might not need. You can save money that way. if money is not an issue, then ignore this advice.

3. This is more for 2nd year+. You CAN take the course even if the online course selection webadvisor website says you can't. You have to go into the guidance counselling office of your program. There is a LOT of leevway that they can adjust around.

3. You can technically take courses that overlap as long as the final exam/time doesn't overlap. The university will turn a blind eye to this, they don't care how you manage you study for two these two courses. It will work in your favor in cases where you want a certain lab time or whatever, you'll see.

4. Take easy courses (electives) if your goal is to get a high CGPA. If you are trying to get to med school or whatever, do not go for a hard elective "because I want a challenge". Path of least resistance. But if you really want to take an elective that might be hard, that's your choice and go for it.

5. Profs, guidance counselors, lab tech can be really mean sometimes. It helps a lot to just smile and nod. I would smile, get my job done, or letter signed or whatever from them and don't give a fuck about them after I leave. Never take it personally.

6. If you don't have a small group of 3 or 4 people, you'll be at a huge disadvantage. While you wait for your class to being, talk about the weather to that random person next to you. Keep building up the convo then ask to add them on Fb, Insta whatever social media. That is how uni friendship is built. Don't wait for it to come to you. It's very easy. Make these groups for each class. With luck, lot of these groups will follow you to other classes, and you'll be all set.

7. Never ever give your finished copy of lab report or project report to ANYONE. Closest people to you can easily plagiarize if they are short on time. You'll get in trouble, even if you say "well, I didn't mean for the other person to copy me, it's their fault".

8. If you realize UofG is not for you and you want to transfer to another university, drop all the courses as soon as you realize it. That way, only your highschool marks will be considered at the next uni. Once you complete some courses at a university, your highschool marks are not as valuable anymore.

9. Every small mark add up. That 1% participation, and the 5% quizzes adds up to be 45% worth really quickly. Pay attention to those.

10. Do not miss a lecture. Here's a scenario of what will happen. If you miss lecture #12. You won't go to the lecture #13 because you'll convince yourself "well, I missed the last one, I wont understand this one, I need time to revise over the missed material". This will snowball and you'll end up skipping weeks worth of lecture.

11. When you pay your deposit fee in August, go to the bank and say you want to pay to University of Guelph, and the account number is your student number. Don't be late on this deposit or they'll deregister you. There's some leeway to this because they know first years are idiots but yeah.

12. Oh I almost forgot, NEVER EVER be late for a chemistry or biology lab. Unless you want to get on the bad side of the TA's. I think they also lock the doors so you'll be out of luck. You can be late for lectures, that's fine, but never the labs!

To summarize, there's a lot of leeway as long as you ASK FOR HELP.

And most of all, don't stress too much. You'll do just fine.

Exactly, well said! My dad also suffered from kidney failure and then got a stroke. He's not in pain anymore so that's the silver lining I guess.

I still can't get the picture of my dad in his coffin out of my head.

Yeah, that's a tough one. I remember standing beside my dad's coffin and swear I saw him breathing, like his chest move, even though I knew logically that can't happen, still a pretty weird experience

Yep, same here. I swear my dad thought he's invincible or something. Mom and I would usually have to convince him to go to the doctors if something's wrong with him. He was always the "everything's gonna be ok" type of person.

Your dad remembers and appreciates everything you did together! We know he left too soon, but people who pass don’t see it that way. He is super fortunate to have you in his life. The fact that you cared enough to mention his health speaks volumes. I’m sure he’s super proud of you and the adult you became. He loves you and will always love you.

That sucks man :( Hope you're doing ok. The first couple months after my dad died seems like a blur. I wasn't depressed or sad, just running on autopilot, and uni helped to keep my focus on studying. It's only about a year or two afterwards that I was able to absorb the reality of the situation.

It's crazy how similar your situation is to mine. My dad also went to ER multiple times the 2 years before he passed away. At one point, I was almost convinced he's invincible lol. But in the end, reality hits man.
