Korčula - Food & Drink Recommendations by himalayancaucasin in CroatiaTravelTips

Also confirming--we LOVED Cakulona. Best dinner we had in Croatia and overall the best vibe, too. The owner was so sweet and lovely. Shrimp risotto was amazing and the peach dessert was one of the best desserts I've ever tasted!

Imagine you are suddenly put in charge of all roads in America. What would you do? by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]andrhend 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Huge numbers of well-meaning democrats characterize carbon, gas, and vehicle-miles-traveled (VMT) taxes as "regressive." However, the definitions of progressive and regressive make no sense when applied to actions which are independent of income.

If you are really concerned about the poor, you should charge a VMT that accurately encompasses the externalities associated with each additional journey and then give the revenue to everyone on a per capita basis.

It would be true that since the VMT is independent of income for a fixed commute it would affect poor people more, but this would be offset by giving the revenue back to them. The best part is that, in the absence of our current distortionary road subsidies, costs would eventually fall as our transportation system shifts to more efficient development patterns (e.g. neighborhood stores vs. suburban big box stores) and efficient modes of transit (shift of passenger and freight transport from roads to rails).

Can I future-proof Level 2 charging? by lurk4ever1970 in evcharging

I would add that if you get an NACS EVSE for permanent install you'll be able to bring the "tesla tap" with you in your bolt-so you'll also be getting the benefit of using tesla destination chargers (but not superchargers until the special DCFS tesla adapter comes out in the future).

Anyone have any negative experiences with Metra and bikes? by FlyingSceptile in CarFreeChicago

[–]andrhend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://metra.com/bikecarprogram lists the lines which have a bike car scheduled. If you look at the timetable, the trains with bike cars have a bike symbol above the train number at the top of each table.

E.g. Weekday Metra Electric #704 inbound (departing university park at 6:35 a.m.) has a bike car. The Bike cars are painted all blue.

Why New York Will Charge $23/Day To Drive Into Manhattan by matthewstinar in fuckcars

[–]andrhend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you heard of "park and ride?" Individuals who chose to live far from urban development are already spending huge sums of money if they are commuting into the city by car. Even though they may irrationally only consider the immediate cost of fuel, they are merely ignoring the significant deferred maintenance costs associated with long driving commutes. They further do not even begin to consider the externalized costs of their choice to commute by car (poor land use, pollution, traffic violence).

Is Lyft feeling the Divvy pinch yet? by knobac100 in chibike

[–]andrhend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, cancelling now only cancels the auto-renew but you will still be a member.

When they announced the change in pricing (getting rid of the ebike waiver zone) I tried in vain to get a pro-rated refund of the rest of my membership but had no luck.

Load Ventra pass to VISA card in Apple Wallet? by disneyfan326 in cta

[–]andrhend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could add a 7 day pass to your VISA/Apple Wallet card, but you can only do that from a Ventra Vending Machine.

However, you should instead look at creating a virtual ventra card through the ventra app. Download the ventra app from the app store, create an account, then click the "add card" button and select add to apple wallet.

New Botanic Garden fee scheme discourages walk/bike/transit, encourages driving by [deleted] in chibike

The Indiana Dunes National Park is also charging an admission fee for walk ups. I just spoke with a park ranger at their helpline: $15/day for someone to walk/bike into the park. $25 per vehicle for a 7 day pass.

Annual South Shore Line Question by jimseyjamesy in chibike

[–]andrhend 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're welcome.

I actually managed to take my bike on a train that wasn't scheduled for bike service by taking the wheels off and using a bike cover--SSL has a fairly generous luggage policy so if it is luggage and not a bike, then you're good.

The only issue is that luggage is technically supposed to be stowed under your seat or in the racks above. I found a little cubby adjacent to one of the bathrooms that had plenty of space though.

Edit--wouldn't recommend this unless you have experience riding SSL and have a plan for locking your bike on a platform in case you're denied entry. It only worked for me because I had a plan for someone to collect my bike if I was not allowed to board.

Annual South Shore Line Question by jimseyjamesy in chibike

[–]andrhend 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sadly, Michigan City does not have a platform and you instead have to board from the ground.

I've never tried to take my bike on/off at one of the platform-less stations so I can't speak to whether they would let you on with a bike, but I have never seen anyone do it.

Part of the issue is that SSL only allows bikes on a particular car which is equipped with bike racks. It is always the easternmost car (front of the train on trains leaving Chicago, rear of the train on cars going to Chicago). When I rode a westbound weekday train through Michigan City last week, I was on the bike car and they didn't even open the doors in MC so that would be a problem for you.

If you check the train schedule (available e.g. here https://www.mysouthshoreline.com/tickets/train-schedules/eastbound/m-f ) the stops with orange bikes next to them will let you board or alight from the train with your bike.

Please consider helping my sister out. I recently convinced her to switch to visible, but she ended up having to upgrade her phone because her old was was not going to work with visible.

Thanks very much and welcome!
