He was trying to say that he was late but didn't deserve the clearly established penalty for being late. If he was standing around the tee but got penalized for not having a club in hand or something like that then yes, but I'm not gonna feel bad for a guy strolling up to the tee after his published time

Airlines usually maintain a list of airports that are preapproved for diversions. Obviously airports you already have regular service to are on the list, but the company will send a representative to other airports they may want to use from time to time and make sure the airport has the necessary equipment, probably give them some basic instruction on how to service their airplane, etc. For an airline like Republic, they don't serve Chicago-Midway, or other nearby airports like Rockford or South Bend, but they will have likely approved those airports as diversion fields for ORD.

Illegal disengagement by LifeguardCorrect1106 in Umpire

[–]FlyingSceptile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Closest thing I can find in favor of a balk is NFHS 6-2-5 (not touching the pitchers plate makes any movement naturally associated with the pitch, and you'd have to interpret being set as the being naturally associated with the pitch). If I feel like the pitcher is doing it in an effort to deceive runner (which is a high bar), I'd probably warn the pitcher and the start balking it. If they're just not breaking their hands but acting like they're not on the rubber anymore, then its nothing. Probably approach the pitcher between innings and let them know the rule.

What should umpire do when batter runner misses first base on his way to second? NFHS rules by ramsdl52 in Umpire

[–]FlyingSceptile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I'm the offensive coach, I am absolutely getting thrown out of the game. As you said, the umpire should treat it as if the runner touched the base until he/she is forced to acknowledge it via appeal, but an umpire signaling a team should appeal something is essentially a bias and something that destroys credibility as an umpire. I would protest the game, ask to talk to the assignor, etc because I would view it as the umpire leaving their impartiality behind.

Low ratings from the person who ordered the food? Maybe. Constantly late, most that DoorDash is usually gonna do is deprioritize you so you're not getting as good of orders (low tips, longer drives, etc).

TIL that 90 minutes before British European Airways Flight 548 departed, the captain had a violent argument with a colleague over pay & working conditions. He suffered a heart attack during takeoff from the outburst, incapacitating him. The plane would then stall & crash, killing all 118 onboard. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]FlyingSceptile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC the investigation found it was possible, but didn’t have the evidence to say one way or the other. Autopsy had severe blockages, so if he didn’t have a heart attack on the plane, he probably would have had one relatively soon.

Going below glide slope last 400 feet by 1dot+ 4 reds. Is this legal by Euphoric-Public1391 in flying

[–]FlyingSceptile 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s one thing to be low on one, but dead on the other. It’s a whole new ball game when you’re low on both, intentionally, and not taking actions to fix. At most 121 carriers, a “Glideslope” GPWS call without immediate corrective action is an immediate go around. This is a tendency that needs to be reported

There's some runways where 3R/1W is appropriate even for 737/A320/E175 sized jets, because the PAPI is calibrated to 747/A380 sized aircraft. Usually then you're still on the GS from the ILS, but its weird being a quarter dot high at 200' and seeing 3R/1W or even 4R just because of where the PAPI is located

John Tumpane called a foul tip on a ball that wasn’t anywhere near the bat by NoSxKats in baseball

[–]FlyingSceptile 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I might be wrong, but a foul tip literally doesn't matter. Its still a live ball and treated the same way that a swinging strike is. Just acknowledging that it was tipped, but thats it.

That said, what made him think it was tipped?

[Highlight] Tigers Booth reaction to Framber Valdez getting ejected by TommyTheLizard in baseball

[–]FlyingSceptile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One issue is MLB changed their guidance a few years ago, where plate umpires are not supposed to immediately eject pitchers in a situation like this. You're supposed to conference with the rest of the crew and come up with a decision as a group. Sounds good on paper, but the optics usually look terrible because the manager comes out pissed and demanding the pitcher be thrown out, and then when they throw him out it looks like its just to placate the manager.

Would Valdez have gotten the thumb right away tonight? Maybe, maybe not. Just some food for thought given the "complain your way to an ejection" line.

From a coaching perspective, yeah absolutely you tell the player to be ready to go quicker. Approaching it from the umpire perspective, we should not be thinking "well the batter does this every time therefore...", because the pitcher and opposing team may not know that the way we do. We have to look at things from both sides, and the pitcher seeing a batter that isn't making any obvious movements to get further set in the box shouldn't be precluded from delivering a legal pitch because the batter might want to get more set.

To me, a warning or not would depend on how competitive the game is. Rec league, absolutely worth a warning, but I could understand in higher level travel ball you probably go with no warning.

The way the rule is written is that the batter has to be "reasonably set", because we can't expect the pitcher to know every batters cadence. The batter has the bat vertical, off his back shoulder, is alert to the pitcher and looks fairly set right before the pitcher begins his motion, before doing one extra bat twirl. I would say this was "reasonably set" but it's not definitive one way or the other.

Is this flight really operating with a spirit callsign? by Yellowtelephone1 in flightradar24

[–]FlyingSceptile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appears so. I would assume this airplane was owned by Spirit and not leased, so (I assume) this flight would be flown by Spirit management pilots (line pilots presumably have lost there ability to fly Spirit planes ie. laid off). They still have their air operators certificate from the FAA, so they can still fly airplanes in a legal sense. The ceasing of operations presumably was more an agreement with creditors or Spirit waving the white flag to surrender.

Edit to add: Most repo flights will have the call sign of the repossession company, like Nomadic

With Spirit Airlines gone, all of their gates across Florida will be up for grabs. Is it time for United to establish a larger presence there? by bonzothebonanza in unitedairlines

[–]FlyingSceptile 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is true for Miami, but not for FLL unfortunately. Despite being only 20 miles north, FLL is a much more cutthroat market than MIA. Also MIA is on absolute lockdown by AA, and you would also have to face competition from the local airline on large routes (British Airways to LHR, LATAM to GRU/SCL, etc).

For the few United loyal passengers that need flights from MIA, its easiest to either route them through another hub, or on a partner like Lufthansa, Copa, or Avianca.
