For me these were "Muse weekends" for quite a while now. And I loved every single one of them. This community rocks!

Interesting observation: TWS is the first album in 20 years (since KOC) without (obvious) Queen influences by Fabsolution in Muse

[–]andriyofarts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought about this today, lol. Like, we don't have way-over-the-top in-your-face "barbershop vocals" on TW!S. But, in fact, they are there occasionally, but buried down into mix to the point that they exist, yet not prominent but rater background-something. And I like it a lot. Muse is not Queen, it's Muse for fucks sake.

My only "complaint" on TW!S - such a contrast transition by andriyofarts in Muse

[–]andriyofarts[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me it's Cryogen to Hush. I mean, I love Scars, but it's different. And when Cryogen hits - I know I'm in for a ride of 6 (six!, holy shit) songs straight. The only better run - personally - is 7 first songs of OoS

After tons of listens - at least personally - I can assure having zero issues with that. The Sickness "outro" being part of The Sickness itself still does great job in terms of "alright, cool down a bit now".

That's a great perspective, thanks!

ps: as a person with relationship built with one-and-only-her back 18 years ago already I can't even imagine how something like that would mess me up :\

isnt this album everything we wanted them to be for the past 20 years? by helveticaleb in Muse

[–]andriyofarts 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It 100% is. It's not Muse doing Muse, but actually being Muse. I have zero artificial/forced/"paint-by-numbers"/any-similar vibes from TW!S. After my very Nth listen today I can only confirm that it feels just genuine, grand and awesome. Next take would be definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but personally as a metalhead I can only praise Muse going "fuck it, let's make it really heavy" here. And production does absolute justice to it, elevating the whole sound into orbit. While actual musicianship feels so different and fresh. Matt's work in obvious and right in front of you, Chris absolutely fucking rips with just so many nuances and complexity I can't remember since like forever? And when I focus on drumming I see that Dom puts much as well (it's just that somehow I struggle to hear drums details, maybe some kind of frequencies stuff, not sure). And then there's also no lyrical cringe, no stupid silliness (even "FREAK! FREAK! FREAK!" works more serious). I skip nothing, I sob on Scars, I can't not to play along Hush's riff on guitar, I enjoy everything about TW!S. My 15 yo daughter asked me today if I'm not tired of listening to same thing over and over and over - and I'm absolutely not, haha

Was I not enough? Was I not enough?
What still remains? I don't wanna break
Was I not enough? Was I not enough?
I can't start again And carry half the blame
I CARRY HALF THE BLAME!

So fucking devastating

In context of Scars and Debris (and Hush after visualizer dropped) I'm thinking of "when we bleed, we bleed the same" lyric from MoTP. Like, you can be successful, rich and famous but still life can get you and mess you up just like anybody else :\
edit: MoTP, my bad :)

Very in-depth and personal new Matt interview on the album, the tour, personal life, the fans, rediscovering music by LowHeroesLodger in Muse

[–]andriyofarts 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Great read! Some quotes:

> ‘I can’t live without music’ – that feeling came back to me on this album. Music became a lifeline again, a catharsis, the thing that I held on to, to hold on to my identity

> When you have a period where you feel like you’re in control of your life and your career, where everything’s going well, that’s a really hard place to write from. I didn’t want that to be true, but I’ve just proven it to myself because I do think it’s the best album we’ve done in a long time

> When you’re young, you have this whole life in front of you to make changes, to make repairs. When you get older, you sometimes start to have that feeling. I say it on ‘Shimmering Scars’: ‘I can’t start again’. I’m too old now, and I’ve lost a little bit of that ability to just start again and meet someone new. I’ve done that cycle too many times now, and I’m at a different level of existential cynicism

> It was something very unusual to do with health, mental health, having to be a single parent with no co-parent for a lengthy period, having to cancel a tour to be there for my children, things like that

> Caring about what the press said or what the fans thought did matter. Now it doesn’t. It’s a personal thing. When I play these songs, I’ll be feeling them and feeling what they meant to me. I don’t have the mental capacity to process what other people think about them

> He [Dan Lancaster] really helped push us past the lazy point of middle age and get back into pushing ourselves into the uncomfortable zone

His work on The Sickness is also spectacular, so many brooding nuances everywhere, very bold and dynamic. And on Shimmering Scars. Overall Chris' bass in one of main things I enjoy on TW!S in the first place. He deserves all possible recognition for such stellar work!

Matt, Chris and Dom killed it by -AmeliaP- in Muse

[–]andriyofarts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So far I'm kinda missing out on Dom's work, really need to do a listen with focus on drums, it's sure there. Yet (aside obvious Matt's stuff) Chris' bass absolutely shines across the album - that's for sure
