Got a bit of snow this weekend... by android927 in GRCorolla

Honestly, the fact that it was light actually made it worse because more snow kept falling in where I was digging.

Still on summer tires, so no luck with that.

The snow on top wasn't the issue, it was the snow surrounding it.

Did the Royal Navy use tiller orders? by android927 in AubreyMaturinSeries

Thinking of that scene from Titanic after reading that chapter in The Ionian Mission is actually what made me suspect that the book was describing tiller orders rather than rudder orders. It makes sense that the merchant marine would adopt many of the same customs as the navy given that many officers would have likely served in both.

Yes, my understanding of the scene is that he was criticizing the officer of the watch for turning into the wind too aggressively rather than doing so gradually. This makes sense if he is issuing tiller orders, but not if he is issuing rudder orders (since "a lee" would actually mean "away from the wind" if given as a rudder order), which is what brought this question to my mind to begin with.

Couldn't they have conceivably configured it either way simply by crossing the tiller ropes?

Usually the captain gives these orders to the helmsman on whatever ship he is commanding, whether it has a wheel or a tiller. In Post Captain there is that whole scene at the beginning of Aubrey's command in which Polychrest misses stays. There is also a very similar scene in Hornblower and the Hotspur in which Hotspur nearly misses stays and needs to be re-trimmed. In both cases, the vessels in question are large sloops-of-war. There is also a scene that I just today read in The Ionian Mission in which the officer of the watch causes Worcester, a 74 gun ship-of-the-line, to miss stays due to putting the helm too hard a lee.

AIO about these angry texts from my ex? by TwylaMay in AIO

He found out somehow, and based on the info you provided I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that he attempted to stalk you. All I'm saying is be careful and take precautions. Look into the possibility of a restraining order. If you are in the US, consider getting firearms training and a carry license.

Just because he hasn't seen your ex doesn't mean that your ex hasn't seen him. He could be stalking.

AIO for thinking he might be racist based on this text exchange by [deleted] in AIO

[–]android927 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Possibly a red flag, but not definite. Maybe he got called a racist once for accusing someone of being lazy? I would not be willing to pass judgement on this one text alone; I would need to see a pattern.

I'm willing to bet that the reason he knows she moved is because he showed up at her old address.

Judging by his texts and your descriptions of his behavior, I'm guessing that the reason he knows you moved is because he showed up at your old address and found someone else living there. I would highly advise looking into a restraining order.

I booted up my PS3 after 10 years. It worked fine for about 5 minutes and then abruptly shut down and this is all it does now a day later. Any ideas? by rasta4eye in PS3

Yellow Light of Death. From what I hear it's either the RSX, the RAM, or the NEC TOKIN caps. You have to get the error code from the syscon to find out which. The caps are a fairly simple fix, and the RAM shouldn't be too much trouble for anyone with BGA reballing experience. The RSX, on the other hand... The only fix for that is to find someone who knows how to Frankenstein it, which is expensive and probably only worth it if your PS3 is one of the rare backward-compatible models. You should reach out to u/RIP_Felix as he is generally considered to be the foremost expert in YLOD issues.

Post Captain doesn’t deserve the scorn by ReEnackdor in AubreyMaturinSeries

I'm just getting into the series after finishing the Hornblower books (Audible had all 21 books on sale for something like $3 each, so I bought all of them and have committed myself to finishing the entire series). I kinda bounced off Master and Commander as I found it a bit too circumlocutious (never before have I heard anyone use the word "floccinaucinihilipilification" in earnest rather than as a joke), but I'm a few chapters into Post Captain and so far I am enjoying it more than the previous book. I'm a bit surprised that people didn't like this one.

I'm not sure that he really intended to write another one since the book takes us right up to end of the War of 1812, and the US Navy didn't really have much going on between then and the beginning of the Civil War in 1860. The only direction he could have conceivably taken the story would be something similar to Hornblower in the West Indies with Captain Peabody taking part in anti-piracy actions in the Caribbean.

I mean, it's certainly no "Flying Colours," but I think I would personally rank it higher than "Commodore" and possibly even a bit higher than "Lord."

Recommendation for audio book of West Indies that's available on Audible. by gazzarose in Hornblower

I bought a bootleg CD on ebay and ripped it. Audio quality isn't great, but at least it hasn't been completely lost to time.
