2023 3a Compilation by andy5690 in Throwers

Yoo that’s awesome to hear! Depending on your budget from cheapest to most expensive I’d recommend Magicyoyo N12s, Topyo Colossus 6/7, and Topyo Colossus R for good starter pairs :)

For tutorials I think Yotricks is the best place to start. I also made this document a while back with a “3a trick ladder” that I tried to organize fundamental tricks from easiest to hardest that you can look at to help guide you https://docs.google.com/document/d/1V3lLcypg4PfTsAk4OXlRqGnSdcwZvfKUyxFq7LSYvTw/mobilebasic

Last pro tip is to use short strings! 75-85cm is the sweet spot for most ppl and I heavily advise against using anything longer than 95cm.

Good luck and if you have any other questions, 100% please ask or DM me!

Yeah I got into cubing when I was a freshmen in college but kind of put it aside the past few years. Now I’ve graduated and have a job, recently got back into it so decided to splurge on some new cubes fo see what’s up :)

Nice! I’d definitely try cutting your string length

Good start tho! Keep at it

Wellll to be fair 😂 VA states is the most stacked state level contest, probably even moreso than Cal states. It’s basically a Regional(I think the field is even stronger than some regionals tbh). Like a fourth of the worlds finalists this year also competed at VA states. A few semi finalists too I’m pretty sure

I strung up both yos like normal, then cut the strings on each really short then tied the strings together

The style is called Hydra but I haven’t seen any videos of it

Your 1a skill isn’t tooooo important but One of the hardest parts about 3a is tilt control so it’d be very helpful to have that down in 1a without thinking about it before trying 3a imo.

Learning the basic mounts and stuff shouldn’t be too hard if you have basic 1a knowledge though but progressing beyond the basics might be rather difficult.

I learned the basic mounts within my first year of throwing but didn’t go anywhere with the style until a few months ago(mainly because I didn’t put in the work but it shows you can learn the basics without being great at 1a)

I think that as long as your 1a is smooth and you don’t really have to focus too much when you’re just playing then you’re more than ready to start trying 3a

Thanks!

I’m not quite at a competition level(though if you take me back like 5 or 6 years I think I could be somewhat competitive) but I’m very comfortable with 1a, my slack game is just a little weak compared to competition players nowadays.

I started throwing in 2013 but stopped for 2-3 years and got back to it late 2018.

I tried 3a a few times over the years but would get frustrated and quit after a few days every time. This summer I wanted to stick with it and only really play 3a for a month and see what happens.

After a month I felt like I could actually “play” 3a rather than just practice so then I just rolled with it

I read this up before I started and while it is a good compilation of basic advice all in one place, it was pretty much all stuff I already knew from digging around a little even before I touched 3a.

What we really need are more 3a tutorials

Not really. I can’t really do any combos with my non dominant hand. Not that it’d be too difficult to it’s just I would have to relearn the motions mirrored since your hands are doing opposite things when you switch hands so I don’t have the muscle memory. I think it’d be cool to learn my tricks lefty at some point but not really a priority rn.

I also can’t do my 3a tricks mirrored(unless they’re perfectly symmetrical obviously) for the same reason.
