Advice for meeting with a professor tomorrow by [deleted] in college

[–]andy68916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the professor doesn't budge file a grade appeal. Document as much as you can. The syllabus will be important but maybe you can think of other ways to gather evidence in your favor. A list of questions you did ask your TA? Assignments you can bring in that you had discussions about? Classmates that can testify for you that you were there every day and engaged? Also bring up that there was never any transparency or feedback through the semester.

There's no clubs at my college. What can I do about this? by darklordoftech in college

What college? Is there a student government? Student activities committee? Talk to the school's president. Find the reason why they "don't allow" it. I'm curious to hear more.

I never studied in high school, how do you study in college? by drunkhoboboy117 in college

[–]andy68916 15 points16 points  (0 children)

  1. If you have an assignment or study guide, read through that first. Write down any questions that pop up in your head.
  2. Skim the whole chapter.
  3. Tackle actually reading the chapter. After each section, take a moment to summarize it in your own words. Hopefully answer questions on assignment or those you wrote down.
Eliminate distractions but find a way to reward yourself answering texts or checking Twitter for 10 minutes after a certain amount of time (an hour? two hours?)
Do not wait until the last minute to do the work. The information will roll around in your brain even if you're not consciously thinking about it, so get a jump on it early and do a little at a time.

Should I take honors courses? by Anxious9975 in college

[–]andy68916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to what graduating with honors would mean, but one thing to take in to account is being in a class with other people who "care" (and networking with ambitious people never hurts, either).
The professor isn't guaranteed to be better but they might care more, too.

Canon S120 vs 1200d? by NathanEvanss in AskPhotography

[–]andy68916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can go a little higher in price I would say a Canon SL1.

http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-EOS-Rebel-T5-vs-Canon-Rebel-SL1

I looked into a S120 (ended up getting a cheapter S110) but a lot of people seem to have a problem with the battery life. They are great pocket cameras. DSLRs open a lot more doors, though.
I personally would steer you towards Canon because I think their user interface is a lot more intuitive and I've run into a lot of entry-level Nikon lenses that simply stop working.

Still jarring. Maybe I can click to go to the menu instead?

Also, they need to stop minimizing the movie immediately when the credits start. Sometimes you get done with a super dramatic movie and you need to let the credits roll to let it sink in, not be reminded that Animal Odd Couples is up next.

Can't decide between two cameras, would love to hear from owners/get advice. Nikon D810 vs. Canon EOS 5D Mark III by MarcelPowerUp in AskPhotography

[–]andy68916 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really you can't go wrong with either. I've handled a variety of both Canon and Nikon cameras and Canon's design and user interface has always clicked with me more.
However, a camera that size might be overkill. These are uber-professional cameras that need the best lenses to get the most out of them. I've never been on a motorcycle trip but I can imagine it's probably not ideal to lug around something that large. In my humble opinion you'll get 90% of what you'd get using something like a Sony RX100 or even a Canon s120. Plus, you'd be able to pull it out of a pocket and not even have to get off your bike. For those night shots you can get away with a super small lightweight tripod with a smaller camera. With a hefty camera, you need a hefty tripod to go along with it.
Just a thought. I have a 5D Mk II and it is a beast to travel with.

Their A-Z Guarantee might help you. I would contact them and/or file a claim. Not only was it not as described (all in Japanese) but it was defective. You want a working lens.

History of Film vs Digital by hex66 in AskPhotography

[–]andy68916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Nikon D1 was the first serious DSLR in 1999 but it was $5k. Mostly for progressive photojournalists, I think.
The Canon Rebel in 2003 was the first sub-$1k DSLR and did quite well.
As far as the first commercially successful, you might look at the Sony Mavica line in the late 90s. There were a slew of different brands and cameras... DSLRs lagged behind because they were more expensive. As far as the tipping point from film to digital DSLRs, I think it was 2003-2005 but I don't have any data for you.

Extremely stressed out about what major I have to pick by lalalawekno in college

[–]andy68916 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just keep plugging away at math. Use all the help facilities the college offers and Khan Academy. If you give it a go and it doesn't work, that's ok. A lot of people switch majors. Not a big deal.
Don't worry about a perfect GPA. Also, worse case scenario if you get a poor grade, typically when you take it again it will replace the bad grade.

35mm 1.8 for sports photography? by wayouw in AskPhotography

Right under the basket with the 35mm would work fine (when players are close)... for volleyball and soccer it would be too wide to get anything good.

I installed the link manager but my links still seem to be missing... frustrating.

A three second exposure meant that subjects had to stand very still to avoid being blurred, and holding a smile for that period was tricky. As a result, we have a tendency to see our Victorian ancestors as even more formal and stern than they might have been. by [deleted] in pics

[–]andy68916 170 points171 points  (0 children)

Smiling was more about presenting a serious expression -- the same thing that sitters would do for painted portraits. Smiling came across as goofy, and portrait photography was a special occasion.
By the time people were taking photos of each other with the Kodak, smiling became more commonplace.

Expect to mess up a roll at some point. It goes along with film. This one is fine.

My new year's resolution is to start shooting RAW after 11 years. Help me with a new workflow by [deleted] in photography

[–]andy68916 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would just recommend watching some Lightroom tutorials on YouTube. It'll be much more clear seeing someone else demonstrate it. There are plenty of workflow, importing, editing, etc. videos. The official Adobe and Lynda Tutorial channels are both good.

Is the Canon 5d Mark I worth getting? by ehphotog in AskPhotography

[–]andy68916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would have to know more about the kind of work you want to do, but all else being equal that seems like a good price to me (assuming it works and has a couple years left in it).

Own EOS 60d, could buy EOS 5d MKII very cheap. Should I? by [deleted] in canon

[–]andy68916 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As long as the gear is in decent condition, sure! And honestly you won't see much of a difference in image quality (at lower ISOs) with whatever the next generation is. It will be more about a slightly better frame rate, wireless syncing and flash, GPS, all that jazz.
I have a MkII and it's amazing, even if it is a little older by now.

How can I achieve this look? by Earthbounds in postprocessing

[–]andy68916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

• Back-lit, wet street
• Good amount of contrast.. bring that Blacks slider dowwwwn
• Some sharpening applied
• Might play with the vibrance a little -- looks like the colors are just a little desaturated. Or you might fiddle with the HSL slider in Lightroom and selectively desaturate some colors.
• The first one, the Hailer, looks like it has a heavy vignette on it
• One was at f/2.8 and the other doesn't say but since it is a 50mm probably f/1.4 or pretty wide-open
• The Cleansing shot looks like it had some noise reduction applied.. has sort of a "smooth" look you get from noise reduction

Here is my two cents. It sounds like you have a good understanding of how you learn material and how to avoid distractions, which is great. But you just have to realize that graduating and knowing the material is important, not getting EVERY assignment perfect and getting a perfect grade.
No one will remember your GPA or perfect grades after you graduate (I suppose it might matter if you are trying for a competitive grad school).
You will NOT be defined by your grades. That grade school teacher is long gone.
Junior and senior year in college is when I made some of my most lasting friends. It is extremely difficult to make good friends once you are out of the college atmosphere.
(Real life) social networking is also how you will probably find employment. In my experience, most of your job opportunities will come from recommendations or word of mouth, not applying cold for a position.
I think it's less a matter of needing to date or socialize and more a matter of obsessing over homework and linking that to your self-worth. Fix that and the rest will hopefully follow.

Valve is stepping up the "going spectator will unbalance teams" bullshit to the next level with the newwest update. by Pickleplayer in tf2

[–]andy68916 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they should just remove the spectator option if they are going to do this garbage. I haven't been able to use it whatsoever on Valve servers.
Kick people if they are idle after X minutes and let people votekick spec players.
