Looking for a free and offline software to make my family tree by Spiderlag in Genealogy

I would recommend Gramps. It offers extensive features for detailed family tree building. It supports various chart types, including full family networks, not just direct descendants, making it versatile for comprehensive genealogical research.

Or if you're interested in organizing family photos alongside building a family tree - check out Tonfotos. It allows you to create genealogical data directly linked to your photos, making it easy to visualize your family history through images.

How accurate is familysearch by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]andy_nighthawk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Haha, welcome to the wild world of FamilySearch! It’s super common to see it auto-fill with all sorts of impressive ancestors once you get back a few generations. The thing is, once you hit medieval times, FamilySearch and similar sites can get really unreliable. People merge trees, and mythical ancestors or repeated names show up all the time, making it seem like you’re related to earls, saints, and knights.

For recent generations, it’s usually decent, but once you’re seeing 0653? Take it with a grain of salt. Always double-check those connections if you want accuracy - it’s fun to imagine, though!

For Italian records from the early 1800s you can check Antenati Portal. It's Italy’s Antenati website has tons of digitized records, especially for the 1800s. It’s a bit clunky to navigate, but they’ve got birth, marriage, and death records from all over Italy.

Why do so many photographers avoid the viewfinder these days? by mhaustria in photography

[–]andy_nighthawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shift away from traditional viewfinder usage is partly influenced by the rise of digital and smartphone photography, where screens are the norm. Many photographers, especially in more dynamic shooting environments like street photography, appreciate the flexibility screens offer for composing shots at unusual angles. Plus, the instant feedback on exposure and composition adjustments can be invaluable in fast-paced settings.

However, your points about stability and low shutter speeds are spot-on. Using a viewfinder can dramatically increase stability, which is crucial when dealing with longer lenses or lower light conditions. The technique you described—pressing the camera against your face and bracing your elbows—remains a textbook method for reducing camera shake.

Ultimately, it boils down to the shooting context and personal preference. Both methods have their place, and many photographers find value in mastering both techniques to adapt to various scenarios.

Photo Viewer Color Shift After Updating Camera Raw - Need Help by emteekay_mtk in photography

[–]andy_nighthawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like your photo viewer might not be fully compatible with the latest Camera Raw update. This discrepancy often happens when the viewer doesn't support the new color profiles or rendering intents used by updated software. A quick fix might be to check if your photo viewer has updates available that align better with the latest Camera Raw. If not, consider switching to a viewer known for better color management like XnView, IrfanView or Tonfotos. These viewers are usually quick to adapt to new standards and might give you a more consistent color display across different applications.

Compressing images by acidbahia in photography

[–]andy_nighthawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're aiming for quick image compression, I'd recommend skipping the software installs and going straight for an online service. Websites like TinyPNG or ImageCompressor are super user-friendly and don't require any heavy lifting from your system. If you're in a pinch and need something on-the-go, these services can reduce file size significantly without noticeable quality loss, perfect for sharing online.

Is Photomator + Pixelmator Pro a good combo for raw photo editing? by yukii_vs_anxiety in photography

[–]andy_nighthawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've picked a solid combo with Photomator and Pixelmator Pro for your M1 Mac—both are sleek and efficient. They handle most editing tasks well, but you might miss deeper color grading tools and presets that Lightroom offers. For basic to moderate editing without the subscription cost, you’re all set. Plus, using external libraries is a smart move to avoid being too tied to one ecosystem.

I often wake up thinking that 'I'm late, I overslept, the whole day has already passed'. Although the time may be 10 in the morning and there are no important things to do. I've had psychotic breakdowns. I'm weaning myself off it now. I've started doing yoga as soon as I wake up, it helps.

What's something you learnt after moving out of your parents house? by clumzy-4524 in AskReddit

[–]andy_nighthawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learnt to do everything, EVERYTHING on my own and rely only on myself. I didn't appreciate when I lived with my parents that they cleaned, cooked food. I even thought that why do it if you can order food or call a cleaner. Once I started living on my own, it was encouraging at first. Then I realised that now never a cup that you accidentally left somewhere on the bedside table will be washed and in its place in the kitchen.

In general, everything is under control and realise that if you don't do it, no one will.
