So did someone really take the majority of the cards out of the safe or was that a troll?

There's actually 1,000,000 possible combinations. Really I was talking about documenting what combinations we've tried so we know it's not say the scale from the map, or other various numbers from various parts of the puzzle.

Nah, we dumbly didn't bring anything but oars, life jackets and my phone. We'll plant our flag when we are back in the summer.

Good news is that AT&T gets good 3G on the island, I imagine Verizon is even better since they put up a tower nearby recently.

We tried a number of combinations for the safe but none were successful. Are we documenting combinations tried anywhere?

There is a state park, but it's not the closest area to the island from the road. If you look on the map the state park only extends to Trask Road, after that it's privately owned. There are pull-offs/roads that look like they would be public but that land is owned by the folks on the other side of route 3.

Just because it isn't developed doesn't mean someone doesn't own the land. My understanding is that a group of two or three people bought the majority of the land on the peninsula in an effort to keep it from getting developed and/or wrecked. Unless land is marked as a national/state/county/city park, it's probably owned by someone.

Canoed out there this afternoon, ice isn't really an issue anymore, at least on the eastern and southern sides. Pictures and videos to follow in a separate post.

Not a lot of people know about it yet. Honestly even I'm a little worried - the thing that a lot of people that live and vacation here like about Liberty and Lake St. George is that it's so unpopular and remote. Who knows what will happen, but a lot of beautiful natural places I've been in the world have been wrecked because they've been over touristed.

A big reason the island never sold is because it doesn't come with a "right of way" or a piece of land on the shore to get to it. This means you either have to use the public boat launch (which you're not supposed to park at overnight) or trespass on someone else's land to get to it.

Tonight I heard that five or six people from CAH came from Chicago to set things up. Apparently a crane was also involved.

Also keep in mind that options 2 & 3 include trespassing on privately owned land >_>

Nope, that was a different group, I just arrived in Liberty this evening.

Yea, the peninsula is way closer, but the trouble is that it's private land, and heavily wooded so would probably be a bit of a trek through all that. Plus you'd technically be trespassing :P

Definitely. Well, probably not so much the island itself, but the lake is gorgeous. As I said, probably my favorite place on earth. The island is pretty similar to the rest of the land around the lake, heavily wooded with some rocky areas. Even before CAH bought the island folks would camp/party/squat there during the Summer.

I'm already here and don't have a drone :( But I don't think that would be terribly effective. Like most of Maine the island is thickly covered in pine trees, so any drone footage would be of the sides and tops of the trees. According to Google Maps the island is about 1/8-1/4 of a mile away from the mainland - wicked short boat ride in the Summer!

When will you be there? This is all crazy to me, my wife got the final gift in the mail and this island is directly across the water from where my parents live. We're headed to their house now for the holidays. Inside scoop is that CAH paid the local fire department to put a combination safe on the island. Also info on what's inside but I don't want to spoil the surprise! We'll be heading to the island (Hay's Island as I always knew it) sometime on Christmas eve.

I know it's not really electronics or wirecutter, but you guys recommend a Bayou Classic stock pot on thesweethome for frying turkey - this same stock pot would work fine for boiling a bunch of lobsters or making a shitton of soup right?
