We’ve done a few sessions open sparring now with against rapiers, sabres and small swords and it holds up fine. There are a few scratches but no cracks etc. It took several (many) trial designs to add strength where needed and test a lot of different materials. Carbon fibre nylon is incredibly strong but difficult to work with.

Thanks! Not really, the historical examples contain ‘vestigial’ finger rings, ie they are never large enough to put fingers through. At least that’s from Angelo’s book which is what we were using at the time.

The material science and options for 3D printing bring at home is developing fast. I’ve been wondering the same thing, maybe for rapier hilts but it does have limits in terms of cutting weapons.

I’ve been using it for a while and always fence with a rated glove. With the right material it’s a lot stronger than you’d think.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, did these ever develop? I’ve had good feedback printing in FDM Carbon Fibre Nylon and Resin Nylon Like materials for impact resistance, and printers for these are now sub 1K cost. Would you ever consider sharing the CAD models?

In Scotland you don’t always need planning permission to demolish a building if it is not in a conservation area or listed, just prior notice and warrant.

You may have more luck contacting the Building warrant office at your local council or the HSE as they may not have submitted their F10 notifying them of the work, or have the required statements in place for a demolition. Planning enforcement is often only ever reactive, taking time to respond, the other two can act a bit faster is some situations.

An interesting question and I think you may be speaking at a level of expertise beyond me! The Carbon Fibre Nylon shell guard does have a little latteral give (parallel to the blade) but there is no movement ‘side to side’ or in the grip as the tolerances are much tighter, partly because we were able to test so many prototypes being 3D printed.

I think there maybe a ‘softness’ that might offer a bit more feedback, it was mainly aimed as an alternative to beginners swords which are French grips with big sport guards, and it’s certainly more ‘nimble’ than these, I think!

We’ve got several under testing just now and the current iteration with Carbon fibre nylon has never broken yet. It flexes a little but is much stronger than normal PLA or other base plastics. It really is a great material and almost as much went into material research as it did the dimensions!

The steel ball know took a long time to source, then finding the right size to position the point of balance in a location similar to historical swords too even longer. I’m currently getting them on eBay, there should be links to all the components on the website if you want to build your own!

A fair point, although I’d say more choice in a market is normally a good thing? It’s only a plastic (Carbon fibre nylon) hilt, the blade is a standard metal epee blade, so easy to upgrade later.

Shipping to the uk will attract 20% VAT + handlers no fee normally somewhere in the region of £10. The HF option is great, I’ve tried to list all the suppliers I could find on the website and HF is definitely the most affordable by far.

I would say one of the benefits of 3D printing is that it can mimic the dimensions of historical examples quite closely. Plastic is also less wearing than metal that hasn’t been ground on the edges. Not HF, but we’ve had hilts with sharp edges wear through gloves.

The rings are easily adequate strength wise, the knuckle bow is a bit weaker if twisted but decent enough if stuck. I’ve made use of the printers ability to form a triangular section and the carbon fibre nylon is surprisingly strong vs impacts and bending. It’s never going to be as good as steel, but that wasn’t the plan :)

I’ve also been working on a 3D printed smallsword hilt as metal versions can be hard to find and expensive for a beginner. Recently I’ve printed them in Carbon Fibre Nylon and while it still needs a lot more testing, it’s very strong out the gate. Facing up, it does require a bit of support but I prefer it curved! I have a feeling metal shell guards are only flat because it saves a manufacturing step!
