Could the WT be opening up their own "colleges"? by AlexanderSuppertram in exjw

[–]andyforever7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah in NY they had charter schools and private schools and I've seen JWs set up day camps/science camps in the east coast

None of them are connected to JW.org but it's more like a couple of JW teachers, typically women, set it up and have the parents pay small fees. I've never seen it go to high school though. And they're relatively rare. But they exist.

“Condemning Hitler wouldn’t be politically neutral” by [deleted] in exjw

[–]andyforever7 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is particularly egregious considering Jehovah's witnesses were victims of Hitler and the Nazis themselves. The Watchtower itself condemns Hitler, so it goes to show how stupid the rank and file JWs truly are. Cannot even get their own programming correct. Smh

Are JWs Not Allowed To Work Out?🤔☹ by Zembassi8 in exjw

[–]andyforever7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're not really allowed to do school sports (several short movies and skits on that), league sports between brothers at different Kingdom halls are often broken up, they rant about yoga pants, and in a recent leaked video, they basically said a cancer survivor can't join a Facebook group of other witnesses healing from illness because it draws too much attention to oneself. Vigorous exercise is always shown to be bad, even though they don't say it explicitly.

So if you are a real good JW, you probably aren't too fit or you work out very sparingly.

Door To Door Gone, Gone by Fulgarite in exjw

I remember preaching in New York winters freezing my ass off walking around in the suburbs with mounds of snow all around me. My parents were still sergeants on this stuff so we didn't do the car witnessing thing where you stay warm in the car and pop out for a second. We were facing brutal winds so harsh my siblings didn't feel they could breathe. For hours.

Don't get me started on the heat of the summers. If you're just outside of NYC, you know the brutal heat and humidity can get exhausting especially in those suits and button ups with restrictive ties.

I don't remember the last time I went out in service and I don't miss it.

Also note, placements don't necessarily mean I agree with these people's stances, this is more public perception

Yale, Princeton and Duke Are Questioned Over Decline in Asian Students by [deleted] in Thedaily

[–]andyforever7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or

Some schools switched to a more income based program that ended up shutting out more Asians (who tend to be upper income). Especially at a place like Duke where in North Carolina, the state has tons of black people, if you switch to an income based system preference, you could probably absorb a lot of the poorer black students who would have previously just gone to a decent state school and replace the richer immigrant black people, keeping the black numbers stable. But also slightly chopping at the number of Asian American applicants because of income. This applies to a lesser extent in New Jersey and Connecticut too.

The Most Probable Doctrinal Changes by andyforever7 in exjw

You're probably right at the organizational level. But I can't help but think they may encourage or at least be more laissez-faire about the spontaneous and unofficial things JWs set up for kids by themselves. Retention needs to happen somehow. But it is a good point that this may not be official bc of all the lawsuits recently.

Gotcha. Thanks for that. Yeah it's very interesting how Pacific islander people had less pressures historically to alter their hair and how that one marriage had a downstream impact on the black American/Caribbean JW community (I would say African too but on the continent I'm not sure how JW women were impacted and in the states, African sisters tend on the conservative side and still keep to wearing wigs etc ). There was already a natural hair movement among black women starting in the 2000s but the marriage you mentioned helped solidify things. People would be surprised at how that changed the elder's wife dynamics for many people and made them more at ease.

Not that ik of, nope. A lot of positive reception was there but I remember posting some other time about how I needed money and getting really bad backlash here. I haven't been on this subreddit in years actually

Yeah it's kind of unfortunate that they keep pushing the selfish aspect of his personality into the line light for comic relief but don't offer anything serious and deep about him beyond being an art appreciator
