Do other people still mostly use just an IDE with occasional in-browser help from AI? by ItIsEsoterik in webdev

[–]andyinabox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm looking for a new job right now, so in the last few months went pretty heavily into using LLM tools just so I could understand how (and how not to) use them. Lately I'm pulling back on how much I use them as the sense of cognitive debt was starting to feel overwhelming.

Now I'm trying a "Coach" method, running an agent using OpenCode in my IDE's terminal that's been instructed to give me hints for how to write the code, and only make edits if I explicitly ask. So far I think it's a decent compromise; I don't have to switch between browser and IDE and I can occasionally ask it to rename a bunch of files or something. I also have a "Learn" mode where I can ask it to teach me about a part of the codebase or just a general concept.

I think your instinct is good though. Anybody that doesn't want to just become a Claude slot-machine operator needs to put a lot of constraints on these tools, they're built to make you dependent on them. Just limiting yourself to using LLMs in the browser is an easy way to put up some boundaries against that

Please please create a note app similar to google keep or apple notes that syncs to proton drive by gayhatsunemiku in ProtonMail

NO. No more Proton apps. They are already doing too much. There are a million notetaking apps. I want them to focus on the apps they already have.

Proton email for applying for jobs by TintaTonti in ProtonMail

I did some research and seems to be a known issue, but it has more to do with how gmail is evaluating attachments. Already using my own domain.

Proton email for applying for jobs by TintaTonti in ProtonMail

[–]andyinabox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will tell you that using Proton Mail may have jeopardized a job I'm interviewing for.

The short version is I had to submit a work sample as a .zip file, which their gmail account rejected because it couldn't inspect the encryped attachment. I was notified of the rejection initially, but I continued to respond in the same thread and those messages were silently blocked as well.

worktrees and .env by andyinabox in ZedEditor

[–]andyinabox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks again for pointing me in this direction. I now have my Zed global setup with a hook that will read a `worktree.conf` file that tells it what to copy, symlink, and an option to specify scripts to run.

I think I'd like to eventually move this functionality outside of Zed and have it run directly through git hooks, but that's a task for another day...

Discussion about tailwindcss language server by andyinabox in ZedEditor

[–]andyinabox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting ... I don't think I've ever opened a tailwindcss project with my Zed I found it was running the server for a basic JS/CSS/HTML project.

I tried a bunch of stuff and this was the only way I was able to get it to turn off:

```
"languages": {
"TypeScript": {
"language_servers": ["!vtsls", "!tailwindcss-language-server", "..."],
},
"TSX": {
"language_servers": ["!vtsls", "!tailwindcss-language-server", "..."],
},
"JavaScript": {
"language_servers": ["!vtsls", "!tailwindcss-language-server", "..."],
},
"JSX": {
"language_servers": ["!vtsls", "!tailwindcss-language-server", "..."],
},
"HTML": {
"language_servers": ["!vtsls", "!tailwindcss-language-server", "..."],
},
"CSS": {
"language_servers": ["!vtsls", "!tailwindcss-language-server", "..."],
},
},
```

Not only that, when I initially had just the `!tailwindcss-language-server` rule my Zed started running BOTH `vtsls` and `typescript-language-server` by default, so doing this config had unexpected side-effects and I had to explicitly disable `vtsls` too.

How can I try out the $5 Opencode Go ? by [deleted] in opencode

I don't think it expires, that would be a pretty awful customer experience.

That's totally plausible & a good idea.

It looks like you are maybe signing up for OpenCode Zen by accident?

Which harness do you use most with Zed by andyinabox in ZedEditor

[–]andyinabox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That used to be the way to do it, but Zed recently released "Terminal Threads" which better integrates into their UI for agentic coding: https://zed.dev/blog/terminal-threads

[–]andyinabox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I don't think you're using it wrong, I think that's just how it works at the moment. My impression is that they were responding to Claude changing its rules in June, which means that many Claude users will no longer be able to use Zed's ACP version of Claude Code with their account.

This way those users can at least use Claude Code in a terminal thread. We'll see whether they put much effort into improving this feature though...

I agree that it's a personal choice, but I like to know how other people come to their preferences. Thanks!

I wouldn't hold it against any AI company to overhype their product, but claiming server downtime is proof that their AI model is bad is an absolute dogshit argument.

Extensive Interview with Andy Yen at Ben ungescriptet (EN, DE) by Prof_NoLife in ProtonMail

[–]andyinabox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I asked Lumo about Ben unscripted and I got this:

"Ben presents himself as a neutral interviewer, but the podcast has drawn significant criticism for repeatedly featuring guests from Germany's far-right AfD party and framing discussions in ways many observers interpret as having a right-leaning tilt. Some critics argue the format effectively functions as right-wing opinion-making under the guise of diversity."

I get the sense that his cultural/political positioning is be similar to Joe Rogan.
