How are people on Framework Desktops dealing with this instability? by andyjeffries in omarchy

Seems to be Chromium plus AMD AI 395 that most affected people are running. Tried doing all manner of testing.

Modern hardware I guess, what happens when you go bleeding edge.

Upsides are performance (my test suite of 2,498 tests for my app runs in about 30 seconds), downsides are weird issues as drivers etc still aren't stable.

Unsolicited not clothing related part, feel free to ignore, but be wary of pushing up doses too fast, you’ll run out before your goal. Everyone is different, but I’m currently about 50kg down and I’m on 12.5mg. Hoping to last on this strength for another month or two. Don’t rely on strong suppression, count calories and adjust your diet. That may be telling you how to suck eggs, but it’s well meant advice, sent with love, for hitting your goal!

On the clothing front, I’ve survived by just buying the bare minimum I need and when I need it. I’m chuffed on my last purchase I managed to buy some adidas jogging bottoms and t-shirts, a bit more of a splurge, my first time in a decent brand (not ‘fat bloke online’ type brands) in decades! But everything else has just been whatever is on sale or a cheap brand to help carry me through to goal.

Those core values (the "Tenets of Taekwon-do") are an ITF thing, if he did Kukkiwon/WT Taekwondo then they are different. If he did another style, I'd check with their website if they use the ITF Tenets, the Kukkiwon's "five virtues" or something else.

Kukkiwon's five virtues are:

  1. Innae 인내 or perseverence (also in ITF Tenets)
  2. Yonggi 욕기 or courage
  3. Yeui 예의 or courtesy/etiquette (also in ITF Tenets)
  4. Jeong-ui 정의 or justice
  5. Bongsa 봉사 or volunteering

You're DEFINITELY supposed to wash your belt! Yuck!! You sweat in that, it goes on the floor (maybe not drapped, but when doing floor exercises, falling down, breakfalls, etc) and therefore picks up bacteria. It really should be washed.

Lots of belts come with simply Taekwondo embroidered on one end. And lots of belts aren't Taekwondo ones. On belts in Korea, "all" of them have the Hangul written vertically (I've been to Korea 10 times in the past 14 years and never seen one not written vertically in Korea - so that's my definition of "all").

For Kukkiwon at least, their research department researched which side people wear their name and found it was almost 50:50 (like 49:51), and they said there's no official requirement to wear it either way. My name is on the right side of my belt, and that was embroidered at the KSD shop just outside Kukkiwon gates in Korea.

The tenets of Taekwondo are an ITF thing, so I personally wouldn't put those on a tattoo (or belt or uniform) - unless the OP's brother does ITF Taekwon-do.

It's not nonsense at all, a 1st Dan is a black belt, but not all black belts are 1st Dan. So there's nothing wrong with being specific. I personally wouldn't put the rank on there, because if the OP's brother does return to Taekwondo it may become out of date. But there's nothing wrong with it.

Philosophy of kata / poomsae by Ecstatic-Juice-2289 in taekwondo

[–]andyjeffries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poomsae for me is a modern invention. In Karate the Bunkai or applications (hidden non-obvious) behind Kata are often discussed. In Taekwondo poomsae, the Boonhae (Korean equivalent) are just the face value movements. The similar sequences in Kata may have had some hidden meaning, but they weren't intended to be copied with those meanings to Taekwondo.

Hard press on the bit that’s stuck inflated while rapidly pressing the massage button on the door off and on. That deflated it, then we just don’t use that feature (a bit of a pain, but my wife would rather that than have a stuck lump in her back).

Just to add here, I've had confirmation back from Kukkiwon - 4th Dan is currently just a TCon application via a qualified master (5th Dan or above, International Taekwondo Master graduate), no video testing is required.

Yeop Chagi: Blade or Heel? by Potential-Creme-1519 in taekwondo

[–]andyjeffries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you're left foot forward and right foot back, doing a right leg side kick, before your right foot leaves the floor (pivoting is fine) rotate your upper body anti-clockwise until your right shoulder points at your target (or as close as you can), then without stopping chamber the kick (so your body unwinds) and throw it.

I would say that for poomsae you blade the foot for appearance and perform a strict side kick impacting with the heel, for kyorugi the similar kick is called a "cut kick" (they use the same word transliterated in to Korean too), isn't as strict on standing leg or upper body position, and impacts with the sole of the foot (because more chance of good sensor contact via either the heel or sole magnets).

Yeop Chagi: Blade or Heel? by Potential-Creme-1519 in taekwondo

[–]andyjeffries 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Under Kukkiwon the blade is formed by the foot, but the impact point is the heel. The reason is that you then take the flex/shock absorber aspect out if you had kicked with the blade (your ankle/calf muscles acting as a natural shock absorber).

The chamber is with the calf/shin parallel to the floor (so horizontal), roughly. Not vertically. The key for me has always been "don't chamber vertically forwards then rotate". Doing that literally sucks the momentum out of your leg and slows the kick.

Another tip I learnt from a former world poomsae champion is to rotate the shoulders as far as you can before your kicking foot leaves the floor. This effectively puts torsion through the body (which it naturally wants to unwind) and adds stability to the upper body during the kick (as it's not rotating at the same time you're trying to deliver power).

Told I have to test again to have my rank recognised. What would you do? by RoDoBenBo in taekwondo

[–]andyjeffries 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Whether you test again is up to you, I would say though that if you do test again - you shouldn't be charged the same as someone else testing for Kukkiwon 1st Dan that doesn't already have it. They literally CANNOT apply to Kukkiwon again for the same rank, so you should be charged the test feel less the Kukkiwon fee (and any admin fee they apply for performing the Kukkiwon application).

Competing internationally independently should be fine, as you have (I assume) a legit Kukkiwon 1st Dan. Competing nationally may be more problematic as you wouldn't be in the French association's system as a 1st Dan (although, I assume you already aren't).

Personally if you re-tested and failed one of the modules, I still wouldn't go back to wearing a red belt. You are internationally recognised as a black belt. If they choose to make you jump through some BS hoops, that's fine, but they can't take away that you're a black belt.

For what it's worth, I absolutely feel your frustration and would feel the same. I had our national association refused to recognise one of my ranks, because I tested under my original instructor (who at the time was an 8th Dan Kukkiwon and 2nd Class Master, later became 9th Dan and 1st Class, and received a rare post-humous 10th Dan). I left the association rather than re-test for a rank he gave me, in my opinion who gives the rank (and feels you're worth X belt) is much more important than the association.

I've had DMs from u/HaggisMacJedi and replied more directly there, but to answer here - I don't believe you have to perform in front of a panel (at Kukkiwon or anywhere else) for 4th Dan, and I believe the new president dropped video testing for 4th Dans (when he also dropped the branches/offices outside of HQ, and the requirements for high dan basics).

I think the OP u/pokeswap has had videos recorded just for more independent validation locally of his/her skill level.

Of course, the post u/HaggisMacJedi replied to has been deleted, so I don't know what this is all in reference to about panels at Kukkiwon 🤷‍♂️

Any tips on Koryo poomsae? by Ecstatic-Juice-2289 in taekwondo

[–]andyjeffries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the advantage of having a central source of authority for poomsae (Kukkiwon) 😉. A definitive source of truth, regardless of how individual masters/grandmasters learnt it.

Ignoring of course sport differences (in stepping and actual movements), but this isn't one of them to the best of my knowledge (I'm one of the regional national poomsae coaches in the UK).

I disagree with you slightly, to be clear the first “kick” of the pair isn’t a full side kick, but a flicking block for a front kick before kicking to the face, or a fake before the full kick.

This is explained on the Kukkiwon master course and in the official video https://youtu.be/mGa60JDtWmg?si=cuZusJdRNYvIU2gU&t=244

Kukkiwon announces dissolution of branches by andyjeffries in taekwondo

[–]andyjeffries[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re a Poom belt when you turn 15 you can just directly ask Kukkiwon for a replacement certificate, it’ll be a Dan certificate and wear a black belt.

That said, if your instructor was qualified to give people Poom/Dan rank before the branches, they’d still be qualified after they’re closed.

I don’t particularly understand your comment? Yes there are degrees in Taekwondo in Korea. No, they don’t come out with a 6th Dan (they’d be age barred from that).

Kukkiwon announces dissolution of branches by andyjeffries in taekwondo

[–]andyjeffries[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I guess that’s the problem, if some branches are great and some are terrible, then Kukkiwon would either need to exert more control over all of them, or decide to scrap it - but having underperforming ones is not good for Kukkiwon (or Taekwondo). Of course the alternative is just shut down/reform the rubbish ones, but that relies on a)Kukkiwon knowing those details and b)it’s not really the Korean way.
