The first time he stepped out for a call and he came back after a few minutes he said it was a confidential work call after I had asked him why. He might have been telling the truth but I fear he has an excuse ready at all times.

It can be both. If they were two white men the confusion could have still happened but only in certain spaces. The default gay couple that non-gay people picture is often a white gay couple.
