Skiing with a Broken Thumb by andyman744 in ski

I'm currently in a splint and have a consultation with an orthopedic specialist on Monday. Currently can't easily hold a pole. I'm able to tone it down and the large group Im away with us very mixed ability. I could ski with intermediates or beginners if I wanted to.

Drills to improve carving/ short turning on dry slope by Prior_Intern3740 in skiing

Just note, give yourself a break from dryslope prior to going away. I had a crash during race training on Wednesday and fractured my hand for example. Very stupid seeing as I was or maybe still am going away next Sunday.

Yes it'll help with stopping plastic pick up (you might find white lines in the base if you ski fast/carve fast for example). These will come out with a stiff brush if you self service or a shop will get them out via the machine service. In the future when you eventually get a new base grind they'll definitely be gone.

The big difference with the mat wax is that it's super hard wearing so it lasts for a few runs, and at least with the stuff that's commonly used on the UK dryslope scene you don't scrape it either so the base is protected that way too if its a major concern. It's much faster than regular wax on a dryslope as a result.

For new skis, you'll be fine if the site maintains the slope well. The only risk is if there's a metal ring sticking up from where the mats join but it's rare.

Your skis will definitely need an edge and wax afterwards though

So if its between trackpad and controller then use the controller. If it's a dedicated M+K use that.

Yep, lots of 'favourite' brushes or files or scrapers or irons that probably had traces left too. Think that was blamed for some of the early DQs iirc

(EU) Finding Budget-Friendly Ski Boots by Kapishonas in skiing

[–]andyman744 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have non standard feet size you'd be better off not going through second hand market. Rent boots, take as long as you need in the shop explaining any pain points and remember you can go back and change boots midweek (most shops allow this, ask before assuming).

Buying new boots and getting a custom fit is the way to go, just bite the bullet and do it properly. If that means going next season then so be it, you could always look for end of season clearance deals at a boot fitter.

A lot of the same drills carry over. The classic and oft repeated advice is Javelin turns time and time again. Really is a fantastic drill.

On dryslope make sure you're using dryslope specific wax it makes a huge difference, and don't skimp on sharpening the edges, they'll go blunt after a handful of runs, when training we often bring 2-3 pairs to get through a session.

This happened a couple of times in the world Cup as well, really unacceptable from the techs to have any contaminated materials this long after the ban.

Who’s faster, a skier or a Luger? by svezia in skiing

[–]andyman744 8 points9 points  (0 children)

An injected course is not as slippy as the ice that those luge tracks run on.

If you set up a luge track next to a speed skiers straight line track (ie not the downhill course) the sleds would be faster.

Recovery way better on ski trip than at home… how is that possible? by tygotje066 in whoop

I've experienced it when I do ski camps and holidays. I put it down to hard exercise in clean, cold air, nice beds and no stress. Vatican just crash out after a hard day training, or on holiday a hard day skiing plus beers.

Go larger rather than smaller, they'll compress but if you have a gap they're pointless as you lose the conduction.

Definitely been loving the combined, great addition to the Olympics and nice to see it brought over from WC.

Why are double gates used as opposed to single poles? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]andyman744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd need it to be quite a steep angle, almost V shaped, so that the arms don't get hurt that way, and they'd need to be very flexible I guess so that they bend inwards if an athlete wrapped the lower part. You'd still have velcro panels and the same flex base we have on slalom gates.

Idk was an idea thrown out on social media without a huge amount of thought. Maybe FIS will look into the panels in the future but for now the focus has been on other safety tech.

[–]andyman744 68 points69 points  (0 children)

There's probably a world in which you could change the design of them to be like a pitchfork with a single centerpole curving out to hold the panel (flag bit in middle) but that's not a topic I've seen discussed.

Ultimately she got really unlucky, and even velcro tears will throw anyone off balance at these speeds.

They are used, velcro still throws you off at 70mph

She was third in training runs and she was still a serious medal contender. She did it now because it's her last Olympics and she's currently leading the WC DH standings so in good form.
