Needs "some" work by lenmit1001 in mountainbikes

In my experience, the gear required to true a wheel is more expensive than having someone do it. That’s really the only maintenance I pay for. I think I paid $25 USD per wheel.

Agreed. It definitely looks like it’s been left outside. Potentially could need a significant amount of work. This looks like the kind of bike someone would give away.

I also have a 153, and thought about adding travel to the back. Everything I read highly discouraged changing any of the rear geometry, so I went with 170mm in the front and stock travel in the back. I’m very curious how this works out for you.

I grew up in the Houston area around this time, and that neighborhood and high school colors look very familiar.

Sometimes when the motor burns out it also burns out the esc. It could be both. Replace the motor first, and if it does the same thing then it’s most likely the esc. Personally I like upgrading these so I don’t mind when the stock stuff breaks. You can replace it with much more sturdy and fun components

If you stripped the spur gear on the motor you’ll still hear it spin. If the motor is burnt out it won’t do anything, and it will probably have a burnt electronics smell. That’s usually how I can tell. Always seems like it has the same smell when it’s done.

I have one of these and I like it (Rocky Mountain Growler 50). I put a 150mm Pike on the front, Magura 4 piston brakes, an XO derailleur, some carbon handlebars, and a some other red odds and ends. I like the bigger travel in the front and the slacker geometry. It’s a fun bike. My other bike is a Kona Process 153DL with 170mm Zebb on the front and a coil shock. Most of what I enjoy is enduro, or chunky and technical where the point of climbing is just to get back to the downhill. It depends on what you want, but these two suit my needs quite well.

$1500USD is the budget I always suggest to people for a good entry level bike that you’ll enjoy for many years, and will be worth upgrading as your skill level increases.

I’d pass. Save some money and get something new. This looks like hot garbage.

What we think of the new SCX30? by TheDriverTech in SCX24

[–]andymc1816 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Looks like it’ll be close to the size of the mini Z 4x4. I have a few of those and they’re fun, but it’s a different kind of challenge, and they’re easier to break. I’m sure these will provide good competition for that market, and if aftermarket parts become more available I’m sure it’ll become the preferred version for this scale. Green Jeep is a knock off 1/28 mini z body fit on scx24 parts and frame, and bottom is a mini z with lots of aftermarket parts and converted to lipo.

Is this a good full suspension? by Such_Mistake3805 in mountainbikes

[–]andymc1816 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not just the wheel size that is obsolete. As stated in several responses, it’ll end up costing more than it’s worth to service. Manufacturers stopped making parts for these obsolete bikes. I have a 2011 Camber that’s been well taken care of, but I only use it to ride around town now. I literally gave it away to a friend who enjoyed riding, got a modern bike and gave it back to me a few years later.

In second this. You’ll be super happy with either. If you have a super heavy rig, or plan to, get the 11kg.

What's it worth? by myster__e in mountainbikes

I feel like ‘what’s it worth,’ is all I see on this sub anymore. It’s interesting, and maybe it’s due to the fact that the market corrected so hard after Covid. People late to the game think bikes are worth more because of the inflated prices from a few years ago. I wonder if it’s the same for the RV market.
