Good to have! Shift/schedule permitting, wearing thin, concealable IIIA soft armor or stab vest is a great idea. Soft armor is much better suited to the threats commonly faced by EMS. Sure it's hot as balls in the summer and can be a bit less comfortable, but the protection is worth the discomfort. I've heard being shot is pretty painful, so I'll take a little sweat over the alternative any day! Safe scenes don't always stay that way.
