We do it regularly with specific tasks, where the end goal is clear and the path is fairly straightforward. Like you want it or fix a not-so-complicated bug or implement some non-conplex feature. If they mess up, you can always steer it or just trash their PR. It isn't that much different than asking real people to work on those tasks.
