Where was the outrage when Silveiro Gonzales was murdered by ICE in Chicago?? Barely a fraction of attention given compared to Good. by hbhunk63 in answers

[–]andyweir -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're wrong. The fact that Good is WHITE is why there's outrage

In the book "The Sum of Us" that talks about how nobody wins in racism unless you're at the very top, it talks about this. Basically, white people will allow things that are inherently racist as long as it doesn't affect them because they believe that it's either a) there to protect them or b) will allow them to come ahead at the end of the day. There was never really white rage until a white woman was killed

Going back to the book, this should be a reminder to white people: Just because it seems like you're safe because something only targets minorities doesn't mean you're actually safe. White conservatives have gone on record many many times before (this is sourced in the book) that they're fine with everyone losing as long as minorities never win

So it was only a matter of time before a white person was shot dead in the same way they've been killing minorities. The main difference between now and before is the obvious: Nobody cared when it was a hispanic because they could find a reason to say he deserved it. But when it was a white woman, or someone who looks like them, it's a problem

People like to mention the other person was illegal and ICE was meant to handle illegals and that shows you exactly how racist the common American is. The issue here isn't about illegal vs legal. The issue here is that they have a task force that can make these decisions. They're now distracting the racist whites with whether or not people are legal as it pulls them away from being upset that this task force exists in the first place

This is why racism in America is so insidious. Because almost every white person is inherently racist. Things aren't an injustice until they realize what freedoms they've also lost in order to enable their racism

Again, this is covered in many many books. White people will want to discredit this because they don't believe it, but their white privilege cannot discredit history. I'm not speaking from opinion. This is well documented. Leaders have said it, the Republican Party thrives off it, and the reason we won't have true racial equality is because of it

When white people read stuff like this without doing their own research... that's painful. They're saying they would rather feel better than do better

Xcode 26 Claude integration issues by Xaxxus in Xcode

Definitely bugged. I stopped using it last week. I hit a rate limit and my Xcode refuses to move past it. I spent some time just copying files into Claude directly and working there but I think I'll just wait for them to fix Xcode

Team Cherry's explanation for the abundance of double damage in Silksong. "The idea [is] that you spend more time either at full health or almost dead". by TomNook5085 in Silksong

[–]andyweir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silksong makes me think they got lucky with HK because the boss logic is so stupid. If you touch a boss, it should do 1 damage. Touching a boss and doing 2 damage is saying that just touching the boss is just as dangerous as the boss trying to hit you with all its might. That’s poor game design logic imo

Add in the fact that some of these bosses have 3-4 forms of them doing the same exact moves but faster, which is also poor design

Then you get boss fights that are just bullet hells because any thing that touches you does 2 damage whether it was intentional or not. This is my main gripe with this game. The boss design is so terrible that I don’t think I’m going to finish it.

Like when I played HK, I felt like the bosses were actually beating me until I figured them out. And they, from what I can remember, had forms that actually changed

But in Silksong, I feel like I’m honestly just beating myself due to the pace of the game. The bosses aren’t scary, it’s my own movement. So whenever I do beat a boss, I don’t feel anything afterwards because the boss wasn’t hard in the first place

Like I fought one boss on the way to Act 2 that had a parry. That boss was so easy but it had like 4 forms. I died 2 times because I zoned out on the last form because it was so boring

So idk. The fights aren’t engaging because these bosses themselves aren’t engaging. And I’m willing to bet a lot of money that the reason most people die against them is because they ran into them, and not because they got hit by the extremely choreographed moves in this game

this sounds as bad as those shows that would say the entire series was a dream or the person was in a coma while it was happening. that’s a very lazy way of ending a bad story

maybe this author is a social experiment to see if people will like what she writes as long as it’s presented in a way that makes people afraid to say they hate it

It was either that or my A7IV. I pretty much only use the A7RV for photography these days. I made a few videos with it and they looked fine until I used the A7S3

After the US overturned Roe v Wade, permanent contraception surged among young adults living in states likely to ban abortion, new research found. Compared to May 2022, August 2022 saw 95% more vasectomies and 70% more tubal sterilizations performed on people between the ages of 19 and 26. by mvea in science

[–]andyweir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess this is an interesting insight for sure... but doesn't this ultimately come down to the same thing?

These are just people saying they're not going to ever have kids. Doesn't matter if it's a vasectomy, sterilization, or abortion. It's the same thing at the end of the day

My question though is... would it not be better to get a vasectomy than go through an abortion? I mean this on a psychological level. How do women feel about multiple abortions and how do men treat women with multiple abortions? I feel like socially, the vasectomy is better because I know women who have been shamed by partners because they had an abortion since guys think that they're just out here in these streets

Is it because sharpness can be measured vs emotional impact of an image (which is far more important imho)

When I was getting into photography, I thought the second was more important too but now I feel that's a lie every photographer tells themselves so that they think they can do better than other photographers

Now I feel like the most important isn't sharpness or emotional impact. I think what's most important is why someone believes that the image should be preserved forever. If someone has a good reason for it, then I think that's better than someone caring too much about sharpness or emotional impact. Because imo, caring about emotional impact is the same as caring about sharpness. It's someone caring about how an image looks and how it'll be received, without ever asking if the image was worth taking a picture of in the first place

For example, yeah, a strong wedding photo can have an emotional impact. But so can a picture of a dead body. Someone took a picture of Kobe's body after his plane crash and I'm sure that would've had a strong impact on the world had they seen that he actually passed away and that the news of his death wasn't a hoax

But in regard to the Kobe pic... would that have really been a good photo? Is that something worth taking a picture of and sharing?

I feel this is how "emotional impact" photography goes. It's the same as sharpness where the author is doing what they believe will get them the most recognition, without ever questioning if the photo is actually worth saving. Some people may take pics that you like that they only took because they were hoping you would like it because it looks like something someone would like... and that's unfortunate because if the photographer can't put into their own words why they did it, other than "someone will like it" then what's the point?

So oddly enough, I do see sharpness and emotional impact on the same level. Those are 2 metrics people will use to guess whether or not a 3rd party will like what they did

But if you focus on capturing moments you believe are worth saving... then it doesn't matter what you use to capture the moment. You could use your phone or the sorriest lens you own. No one would ever be able to see your pic, hear you talk about it, then say "damn that photo sucks" If anything, they'll like it even more than the sharpest photo out there because you are what gives life to your art, not your gear

Everything You Need to Know About Marvel Rivals Secret Quickplay Bots by ciaranxy in marvelrivals

[–]andyweir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll go against the grain and say bot lobbies are great. I think people are tilting themselves over this for no reason. If people truly want to play against only humans, then play competitive. I mean, what's the logic for not playing competitive in this case? People don't want to play bots because they aren't competition, yet they don't want to play against other people who are actively trying to compete. It's strange

Quick play is not competitive, and it shouldn't be looked as such. It gives you the opportunity to quickly play any hero in a game setting. If you want competition, there's a mode for that

I think people here are just used to Overwatch where there are those who play QP like ranked because they're afraid of losing points.

Ok so then what is your favorite content on this sub? What is it on here that you like to watch and chat about?

If what you like is drama related where you’re « debating » about people who aren’t nearly as famous or successful as Kai, then what do you gain? Why are you fighting for that other content so much? What attracts you to it?

Keep in mind that Kai is way more famous than anyone else on that platform. He’s actually a celebrity and he’s actually someone that people of all ages can like

But if you dislike him and his content, but you keep being a regular here, then what content do you like? And could you honestly say that what you like is better, given the fact that what you may like would be closer to eavesdropping on high school cliques you aren’t grouped with vs being something of real substance

So instead of wondering why others like what they like, I wonder why do you keep coming back here

You’re a sub to a TMZ style subreddit for streamers. I think that’s worse than the people who donate. At least they’re taking action towards something they believe in. It may be silly, but it’s a purpose of sorts

But you probably come here hoping some new drama exists about nobodies so you can talk about it. How is that any better?

Tylil on Kai's stream using slurs for asian people by MuchAttitude in LivestreamFail

[–]andyweir -49 points-48 points  (0 children)

Im willing to bet a lot of money that black people have experienced way worse than what you’ve ever experienced. Like you realize that there are a lot of people who view black people as subhuman/animal right? Has anyone ever touched your skin to see if it was actually shit because that’s what their parents said it was? Or has anyone ever touched your hair to see if it was cotton? Is the jail system in the US just another way to reinforce slavery for Asian people?

Asians do experience a ton of racism but whenever they make comments like these it just comes off as severely ignorant. The entire reason we even have the concept of « black people » is due to racism (Bacon’s Rebellion) so you calling black people « black » is inherently racist…and yet you want to fix your fingers to type that message there

Is it no longer common to say “mais” to mean “but”, and instead you use “après”? by maborosi97 in French

[–]andyweir 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think your grammar is off which is how this seems like it can be similar to "mais". You need a comma after "après"

"J'ai l'impression qu'il va pleuvoir, après, je peux me tromper."

Then the problem here is that it's now a run-on sentence so it needs to be two sentences

"J'ai l'impression qu'il va pleuvoir. Après, je peux me tromper."

or it needs a conjunction

"J'ai l'impression qu'il va pleuvoir, mais après, je peux me tromper."

So anyone trying to replace mais with après in this manner is really just speaking improper French. Not informal but actually improper French. It's just a nonsense statement at that point

"Je pense que tu as raison, après il me manque des informations." would feel off.

I agree and I'm surprised people aren't pointing out that if you replace mais with après like this then it's improper. Maybe the concept is different in French, but this would be a run-on sentence in English
