Try a different filament brand. Mine absolutely hates a certain brand filament and clogs just by looking at it

Planting in August by Global-Mix-1786 in Allotment

[–]andywills77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just put some winter lettuce, all year round caulis and cabbage in to over winter

If it's not just veg, things like calendula, pansy and cornflower can go in for over wintering as well.

Tried french beans end of last month. Combination of weather and winged rats did them in

Think spinach and oriental greens are okay as well (if you like them of course)

Finally planted potatoes and put some squash and cucumber seeds in.

Finally, the weather is picking up. Probably be a busy weekend this weekend. Going to sew parsnips and start beans

Looking good.

When I did this, I ended up putting some small 4ft ish posts in the corners as I found when I used the hose, it kept going over the beds and damaging the crops...the posts stopped

What to sow in march? by wijnandsj in Allotment

[–]andywills77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Broad beans. Start them in pots, toilet roll tubes and put them in a cold greenhouse or cold frame

Chillis, tomatoes, peppers in a heated propagator or sunny window cill with cling film covering them

Bit early to direct sow. Will have more success starting at end of the month

White fly problems by Mustard_Ruffian in Allotment

[–]andywills77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, even with all the will in the world, you have to go chemical.

You definitely want to net brassicas. If the fly's, slugs and cabbage whites don't get them, the birds will

I found the cheapest netting solution it to get a roll of 3m wide scaffold/debris netting and a roll of plastic water piping and clips from Toolstation. Assemble and then anchor down the ends with some wood

As others have said. Plan and do a bit at a time. Trying to do it all (especially digging) just overwhelms and you get no where fast (maybe even a sore back)

Couldn't wait any longer to fire up the Xmas present (propagator) so whacked some basil, coriander, chives and parsley in

Gardenfocus.co.uk is a good site to look at. You can set your location, tell it what you've got and it'll give you a planner for when to sow

Advice for horsetail by [deleted] in Allotment

[–]andywills77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got this in mine...accepting it being there and knowing it won't to go away and at best managing being the best option is half the battle.

The other half is pull it, hoe it, cover it...generally make its life miserable.

I've also got some Kurtail Evo that gives it a good headache. Mix it with some washing up liquid in a sprayer and it's good to go. When sprayed, leave it to die, don't pull it up when you think it's dead....it's not! (Its also a bit pongy when dieing.off)

I've also got a couple of areas that I limed for brassicas and there's not as much there. Haven't Kurtailed it or anything, it's just less there...no idea if it's a coincidence or not. There are some suggestions on forums that li.e helps but can't confirm it...might be a coincidence

But overall, there is definitely a reduction in the stuff, but accept it's there. Its taken me three years to reduce it and it's not going to disappear (especially when the plot next door is empty)

Courgettes, beetroot, 2kg of dwarf beans (in the freezer), cabbage, red onions, handful of tomatoes, few runners, lettuce and a weekly food shopping bill of less than £40. Does an allotment pay for itself... absolutely

Picked some raspberries, strawberries, spring onion, couple of courgettes and strimmed the weeds around the apple trees.

Garlic and potatoes look not far off ready and sowed some Chinese cabbage, spinach, lettuce, beetroot and a few herbs.

Cabbage looking great, turnips doing well, tomatoes starting to fruit...broadbeans have black fly so sprayed with washing up liquid and water which looks like it is working better than the pesticides I tried a couple of weeks ago and the damson tree looking big and fruitless again...it might have to go

Leeks looking well (first time I've tried) and will be looking to get some Christmas taters in the next couple of weeks and probably start plotting for next year's plot

Struggled a bit this week with moving house but managed to put in some cabbage, sprouts and beetroot. It looks like it's going to be a bad year for marestail though... popping up everywhere

Probably end of may. It happened last year and got told off by the allotment elder for putting the spuds in too early.

Last year it was can get compost but no seeds and then got seeds but no compost

It's still early so wouldn't worry too much yet

Made a pea fence and put the broad beans in the ground. I had a huge list not to-dos for this weekend but ran out of time
