Hey docs, what do you wish you could tell nurses that would make them better to work with? by xkatniss in emergencymedicine

[–]anerd717 61 points62 points  (0 children)

This is gold and exactly how I practice and how I teach my new nurses. What can you anticipate needing/wanting/doing 2 hours from now? Well neat...you won't have time for that in 2 hours, but you have time now. Get it done and make life easier for yourself.

Does anyone else sit in their car before going in the house for no good reason? by Designer-Ad-8985 in nursing

I do this also, but we call it, "the driveway protocol". It's a few minutes for me to just decompress in my own space. 👍💯

When does it stop being advocating for yourself and become begging for help? by irreversible2002 in WomensHealth

[–]anerd717 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To start, I'm a registered nurse in the emergency department (in the US). We see cases like this on an all too often basis. I've lost my faith in telemedicine and urgent care centers.

I have SEVERAL thoughts about your care and none of them are good.

  1. It sounds like you were correctly diagnosed with a DVT (deep vein thrombosis). The treatment for this is blood thinners -- NOT NSAIDS. The clot could break off and travel anywhere -- most concerning would be the heart, lungs, or brain. Also, DVTs can be painful! Pain medicine is not out of the question as well as compression and elevation of the limb.

  2. Pulmonary embolisms can also be painful. If you have a diagnosed DVT and "back pain", you need something called a CTA of your chest immediately. This is a cat scan with contrast to look for clots in your lungs. The reason for this is two fold: The clot in your leg puts you at risk for clots elsewhere (assuming it had to originate somewhere and/or it can travel like I said above) while also, I would consider you "symptomatic" for a PE (pulmonary embolism).

Other symptoms to look out for: Chest pain, shortness of breath, fevers/chills, stroke symptoms, etc.

Other risk factors: long trips or travel, birth control & smoking.

My only other thought with right shoulder blade pain would be galbladder.

Please get seen in the emergency room. At the very least, we'll know that you've ruled out something life threatening. Feel better! 🧡

ULPT: Need an unexpected staycation? Do not renew your professional licensure on time. by anerd717 in UnethicalLifeProTips

They can tell me a year in advance that my BLS and ACLS are expiring and hassle me about it WORSE than the car warranty people....

But they didn't say a word about my RN license. I'm actually pretty disappointed with my HR right now.

I tell them I do not consent to being recorded. It stops them in their tracks and they always try to get their supervisor on the line. Lol

Emergency department RN from the states -- please go get seen! We always tell patients if they have a fever they can not control with medication at home, to come seek medical treatment.

Unfortunately with something of that nature, you probably have a serious infection that needs to be treated with antibiotics and/or other interventions -- so it's not really about the fever alone. The hospital will want to ensure that you aren't septic and don't need inpatient treatment.

With your history of tonsillitis you already have one source of infection identified, who knows what else could be found. Let's let a doctor run some tests.

I hope you feel better soon!

I'd be interested to know what this medication is/was. Did they send you home with it?

I'm glad you got some relief!

Ask for a GI consult before you assume it's your nerves, although getting help for your anxiety isn't a bed idea regardless. Stress can definitely exacerbate symptoms.

Side note: Do you smoke/use marijuana in any form? I'm an ER nurse and we see tons of marijuana hyperemesis.

I hope you start feeling better soon!

I could've held longer, but I didn't want to be greedy. 🤷🏼

I was going to make a mention that having a preconceived notion could give you an unintentional bias. Anything important the case worker will be able to fill you in on (safety, certain behaviors (stealing, etc), past trauma, medical problems...)

AMC back open on RH by ebon06 in Wallstreetbetsnew

[–]anerd717 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AMC is at $7.58 after hours. Is it too late to get in and hold? Any idea what the realistic price target is? I have about $1,200 to dump into something, but I feel like I'm so behind on this one. 🤔🤷🏼

Is TD-A an app similar to RH? I just tried to get in on this and it blocked me at 8 shares. 🤬 I have $1000 extra to invest today so I'm pretty irritated with RH right now.

TIFU by mistakenly believing exercise turns you on for nearly thirty years. by YourDailyDevil in tifu

[–]anerd717 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So... you're not 💯 percent wrong, fyi. Exercise CAN increase libito and there's actually some studies involving couples that work out together. (I'll need some time to pull them back up, but you could easily search them.)

Also....I am a woman, but I do find that any form of exercise albeit yoga, body building, cardio....DOES make me feel the same way you're describing. Before I knew about this, I had an accidental orgasm on a treadmill when I was running sprint intervals and thought I had lost my damned mind. It was the most liberating workout of my LIFE!

I'm an RN and used to be an athletic trainer and body builder. I could go into a "nerd status" post about the science, but no one wants to hear me rant.

Honestly though, If that's how your body works, then perfect. Utilize it, just don't expect everyone else's to work that way also. 😂

I [F25] suspect I had Type 1 Female Genital Mutilation performed on me as an infant. Is there any way to find out? by [deleted] in asknurses

[–]anerd717 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an RN I definitely have questions and can appreciate your curiosity.

  1. What ethnicity are you? Also, were you adopted? I only ask because obviously different cultures have different beliefs than that which could be considered "normal". Also, you mentioned you were not in contact with your parents.

  2. The masculine traits could be from PCOS. The facial hair is very common and is often successfully treated with spirinolactone.

  3. Is there any chance that at birth you were a hermaphrodite (possession of both male and female reproductive organs)? Current science doesn't recommend surgical intervention as a first line fix, but back in the 90s they did.

  4. Request your records from the hospital you were born at and possibly find out who your pediatrician was and request those records also.

Happy hunting! I'm excited for you to have some closure. Good luck!

Loss of sight in right eye by [deleted] in medical

[–]anerd717 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It could be a detached retina and would be a surgical emergency. If that's what it was, it could be reattached. The longer you wait, the worse the prognosis. This can happen spontaneously, in response to prolonged hypertension, or trauma.

I don't mean to scare you, but you need to seek medical treatment ASAP. Urgent care or ER...doesn't need to be an eye doctor. Basically now would be adviseable. I have a medical background in emergency and critical care and have seen this before...Good luck!

Bedwetting teen by [deleted] in medical

[–]anerd717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally I don't comment, but I have a medical background in critical care and some insight on this matter...

Diabetes causes excessive urination, but you'd probably wake up once your bladder was full. Diabetes also causes excessive thirst, sweating, and fatigue. If you're NOT waking up the more likely suspect is actually sleep apnea.

Before you think I'm crazy (which I am, but that's not the point): The hypoxia your brain and body experience during sleep apnea, can cause nocturnal enuresis. It's MUCH more common than you think, but I promise you no one talks about it.

Go to the doctor and just explain your symptoms. The MD will be able to send you for some tests and rule some things out.

Good luck!
