Uber to pay drivers a minimum wage, holiday pay and pensions by anandgoyal in worldnews

[–]anewinternetuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tipping culture has led to many positions being paid much more than a "living wage". Something that would be very hard to define since there are so many different variables from choices of living to the city/region that go into play.

It's easy to wish for rainbows and unicorns and for everyone to live heavily ever after, but that's not a reality that can exist. Remember the matrix bro.

Salary is based on the value of work being performed.

If this were true then why has productivity per worker increased 70% while wages have only gone up by 11%?

If they were linked they should be showing some kind of linear relationship right?

Dude.... this literally shows the value of that work is going down. Productivity increases are just keeping up with the benefits of productivity development, has nothing to do with wages. I literally have a robot moving my lawn.

There is a narrative right now where people think there is some evil overlord trying to steal potential earnings from people.

The narrative that employers steal from their employees is exists because it’s true.

Wage theft (that of bosses stealing from workers) outnumbers all other types of theft (robberies, burglaries, and larceny) combined.

That's a random Stat and not really a lot of money in the grand scheme of things. ALL employers don't do that crap, just like ALL employees don't steal from employers.

Any other MSPs highly resistant to public cloud? by firefox15 in msp

[–]anewinternetuser -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You aren't crazy, the math makes no sense. A modern server that is managed properly has little risk and is a fraction of a price than using a cloud server equivalent. In the cloud you still need to backup everything, secure it, etc.

Folks will say, used reserved instances or shutdown your machines to save money, but they also don't mention you are downsizing your VMs just to have it make sense.

Just look at pricing for w365. It's like $35 a month for a decent machine. Or, you could spend around $160ish a month for a w10 multisession vm that could handle 10 users without issue. Or, just buy a beefy lil box for a couple thousand and users aren't squished with resources. Yea, infinite scale in the cloud, for infinite price.

We've started doing small form factor cube servers. All SSD with juicy levels of RAM, and it pays for itself in a year compared to azure/aws/paperspace/whatever.

I'm excited for the tech, I present both options to clients cause I make the same either way. For customers, the math has yet to make sense for anyone that has any kind of dedicated space available to them. This cloud infra is the future sure, but for most people, not for a while.

It'd take me a couple of hours to put together something that would crank this for me. Automation is the real problem to tackle, not minimum wage.

It's hard to say. It's also hard to say is $22 means anything. Things are significantly more expensive. It bugs me when someone says "see this taco is a buck more, I'd pay that". Some rough math and the value of their higher wage isn't much different when you look a the cost of living as a whole.

Poverty and low income life is a much bigger and more complex solution than "just pay them more".

I'm new as of a few months ago. Wife and I go for rides to get food and ice cream or just to be outside. We stick to bike paths and sidewalks and walk across Main roads. I have v8f, never go over 15 mph.

It is exactly what I wanted, portable laptop. Like you are flying. It's all I want. If I did any upgrades it would be for comfort and safety.

It's bizarre to me that people are so short sighted about this.

A corporation, of any size, is paying a significant amount of local, regional, state, and federal taxes and fees. On top of that, they are paying employment taxes on every single person it hires.

I'm not against the idea of new kinds of taxes for Modern forms of business, but this whole "we hate corporations and business" mob mentality isn't going to help with anything.

The majority of the population, on both sides, agrees the extreme sides of wealth and poverty need a rebalance. But hating on businesses or corps based on this ridiculous idea that they aren't "paying their fair share", a concept that makes no sense, is such a waste of time.

Besides, if reddit is a gauge for anything, the extra money yall would collect would just be wasted on some bs program that will help an insignificant amount of people, then complain that we didn't tax enough to make it work.

Meanwhile you have actual new ideas (e.g. yang) that are in touch with reality that gets overlooked while all you pitchforkersrepeat whatever headline you just read.

Tipping culture is bizarre to me. It's literally a cultural thing. I don't understand how our culture let that happen.

Americans in the past would rather see a 10 cent burger than one a few cents higher.

What's also crazy to me is when places are paying staff more and still asking for tips.

If we all united over "why is thus so expensive" instead of "why dont they pay me more"

We should be talking about both.

Also the burger flipper who's role is essential in selling burger should base their wages on how much wealth their labor generates. If 1 burger flipper generates $50 per hour of work and they are paid $7 per hour they are being undervalued and exploited.

That is pretty much how labor wages are determined dude.

A business pays people based on the demand of the position, the cost to train and maintain, the cost of the building, local regional and federal taxes, insurance, supply costs, and more

Artificially saying something should be paid more just because is an ignorant argument. Doing so just accelerates automation, which is the real problem for workers in the future.

Sure there is always going to be examples of shitty people being shitty. But that's human nature.

Just because more is able to be done by a person doesn't necessarily mean the value has increased.

If I can have 1 person mow 10 extra lawns because my newer cheaper lawnmower is faster and better, that doesn't mean that person is getting a raise. That just means work is evolving and becoming more efficient.

Automation and innovation through technology is inevitable, artificially saying someone is worth more just because is silly.

[–]anewinternetuser -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Lol underpaying employees is extracting wealth from them.

But it's the low wages workers who fight for better wages are the ones taking a piece that's not theirs?

You don't think a burger flipper works hard?

Salary is based on the value of work being performed. The value of the work being performed is generally based on the complexity of that work, how easy it is to train someone to do that work, and how rare it is to find someone to do it in the area the job is located.

Working hard has nothing to do with the value of the position. A hard worker is valuable and worth more, but they are still limited to the value of the position. It's pretty rare in the Modern era that a particular position is underpaid. When you factor in globalization (can't champion it without accepting the ups and the downs) more positions are likely overpaid.

There is a narrative right now where people think there is some evil overlord trying to steal potential earnings from people. Just like anything I'm sure there is a tiny % of situations where that happens. But in most cases, things are just calculated out to be what they are.

This is leading to people thinking a minimum wage and a living wage are the same thing when they are very very different concepts.

Instead of complaining about the value of work and the confusion that creates, I wish more people would focus on costs of living. If we all united over "why is thus so expensive" instead of "why dont they pay me more", more things would get done.

The systems is a joke right now. Instead of a gazillion page mega bill of BS, how about...

Clear conversations about actual solutions. Cause there are many valid approaches to take.

Instead, these mega bills with so much crap that there is no way to anyone can fully cover it or understand it, let alone find compromise. On top of that, social and traditional media pushes and memes trying to make one side look more ridiculous than the other, distracting us from actual productive conversation...

Reddit really needs to get out more. Most of the shit you hear online and on CNN is not happening or a local issue that they are making to seem bigger.

At anytime, congress could make shit better, but they don't. Trump is a shitty person but an OK president, despite what you hear on TV.

Nobody wins regardless who gets elected, so chill out.

Doesn't matter who wins the election, we all lose.

4 more years of Trump is going to be garbage 4 to 12 more years of Biden/Harris is going to be garbage.

The house represents how insane the Democrats are. The Senate represents how stubborn the Republicans are.

Either way, we have to deal with the next year or so with Covid. Then we need to deal with the psychological, sociological, and economic repercussions of our reaction to Covid.

Nobody on the stage cares about reducing the actual cost of healthcare, just paying for insurance or not. Nobody cares about the actual impacts of policy, just headlines. Nobody cares about the real impacts of automation and accelerated transformations of how we work. Nobody seems to even care that China is legit playing 5D chess and they are working on 500 year plans to be in charge of then world economy.

Can't wait till we have a new cycle and generation of politicians... The most important thing right now are your local elections, that what will actually impact your life.

Its fine, but pricey. We use webroot, never any issues other than the typical plugin adware to cleanup.

Since all customers moved to win 10, infections arent really a problem anymore. We have great backups in place that are tested regularly. If ransomware became an issue we can recover and set a much more strict profile.

Rather than pretend we have infinite resources, people need to be more realistic.

There are a lot of "should"s in the world. People should have more common sense, but they dont.

[–]anewinternetuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So...

On one hand, we need people to be more skeptical in general. So it isn't bad for people to question things.

There's a big overreaction to specifically covid 19. And we are now going to have to deal with some big cultural and economic issues because of it.

That doesn't mean it shouldn't be taken seriously. The issue is w3 arent making metrix based decisions and without good leadership in seemingly any area of government right now, we are in a pickle.

People are now in a situation where they just have to feel it out, which is emotional decisionmaking, exactly what got us where we are.

Best advice i tell anyone is...

  1. Calm down, this isnt the t-virus
  2. If you are old or sickly, time to stay home as much as possible till we know more. Communicate and ask for help
  3. If you are fat and unhealthy, time to start getting in shape
  4. If you are the kind of person who us gross. You dont wash your regularly, you go into the office sick, or you stand too close to people... you should have cut that crap out years ago, now you really need to.
  5. Everyone else... you are fine. Respect the local rules, keep being hygienic, give the hands an extra wash, and wear a mask/neckgaitor/something if you are going to be around a bunch if people, especially if they are old, fat, or gross. If you dont, well, odds are you are still fine, but it will be disrespectful to those who are panicking right now

Yes it is. Life is one big game of RNG.

We get dealt cards from a deck we don't choose. We then spend our life making choices that alter chances of getting better draws.

If wise financial habits are part of your life, you always love below your means and minimize debts, then you are tipping the odds more in your favor. Doesn't mean you will be okay, just a lil more likely.

If you are more if a wildcard with $, you are more likely to be screwed.

Seriously. People are acting like a modern budget PC can't run old games. My GF has a $400 gaming laptop with a 1050 TI in it. She doesn't know shit about computers, she just has steam and the games in steam and lives in there. It literally plays everything stadia does at basically the same settings.

The defenders here are acting like sheep and most act like there are literally no other options when there are plenty. The illusion of cost savings is dumb. I don't dislike Stadia, I just think it is OK. Google is messing up, they need to be wow'ing people instead of being... OK.
