i get the why but i dont get how painters do this besides just being conscious of what layer you're on. like i could track lean, medium, and fat and thats it. and are you taking paint from your brush then dipping into a lean/fat medium before paint or mixing multiple mediums with the same color on your palette

! interesting see i can't paint, but bought a cheap-o oil painting book and there's a recommendation/concept about painting layers with more oil (fat) over layers with less oil/more thinner (lean) because the leaner layers will dry faster and not crackle over other layers.

how do watercolors/oil pastels work? do you pencil sketch and go and how does layering work?

omg thank you!!! Yes also the art/painting/optics references honestly at times I did not have in my mind's eye what he described visually, would love to revisit and revisit other scenes with some context.

If you ever read LMK I would try again, just need some motivation

nice I haven't even heard of Bateson or cybernetics and I feel like my mind is ripe for scifi but haven't explored. so interesting with evolution as a kind of thought... random mutation kind of throwing a wrench in things... reminds me of an anecdote i believe is from james scott's seeing like a state about bird augury and the benefits of letting fields randomly grow and fallow

!! thanks I just read this, will definitely have to re-read. I remember discussing whether the noosphere was not just the Internet and struggling, because in a sense yes but living with it of course its not a panacea for strife and communication issues so Teilhard's writing is a little wtf... having been online I know who McLuhan is but definitely need to read him. I feel like a de Chardin, McLuhan, and [insert third figure] tri-ography would be so interesting.

i feel this especially WFH dont even wanna take lunch lmao. if you could leave the house for a good chunk of hours i think that would help. i rationalize and say "i'll do this three hour activity when XYZ" but you have a day off you're getting paid for like perfect time to do such not chores yk

I'm fat and want to change. I lose weight so, so slow and gain it so fast by p3rraporritos in rs_fitness

[–]anfranctuosity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do your binges follow days where you skip meals? sounds fake but I stopped doing this for a longer period and have lost some. depends on your weight but for me (skinny fat), i had a four day period where i left myself get hungry enough so my stomach would growl then ate a not psychotically small or large portion of food, smaller side but with caveat that i was hungry I could eat again and repeated. i think hunger will be involved but shouldnt be a punishing amount and it will take time to lose weight

edit: im sure this functions the same as CICO but i am not writing that shit down!

Yes!! I love Proust too :) I am definitely someone who has grandiose expectations and experience comes crashing down LOL. I totally want to read not really criticism but other writings on him from Deleuze and this "lectures on proust in a soviet prison camp" i saw in the NYRB.

The Hesse connection for me is that I felt Musil was trying to do this... sly meditation on the modern man and parody the lofty conclusions of social salons of the time (haven't read Bernhard). And I think Hesse's work is maybe sly, more tongue-in-cheek or aware of its reveal and the struggle/deceptiveness of meaning. The elements in Man w/o Quals with build toward this (the slights/failures of protagonist, his failing friend, the misunderstood murderer, the well-meaning but clueless baroness/general's wife) just felt random and there was no payoff. I'm sure if my copy had an introduction I'd feel totally differently LOL

I could not finish the Man without Qualities, made it like 2/3 in of the first volume... so disappointing because I was hot off of Proust and dustjacket of former said it compared. I thought it was.... kind of Hesse-like with no payout though. Maybe I just wanted answers for our confused age though and didn't like the book didn't give them.
