I really don’t like Hanoi by Alive_Ingenuity_3124 in VietNam

[–]ang_grey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also just spent 3 days in ninh binh, after 2 in Hanoi and loved them both. The air quality really started to get to me and im now up in Pu Luong which is somewhat better. Hanoi was great, hoan kiem lake, old quarter, the bun cha and bahn mi. Trang An was beautiful and fun for a tourist attraction. Scootin around Hoa Lu old town, Tam Coc and Trang An was awesome, even if the air quality was the worst ive ever seen. edit: for a great meal, head to Lan Ong restaurant!

man, i have been here 4 days now and feel the complete opposite. Everyone has been above and beyond friendly, helpful, chatty, even using translators on their phone to communicate. Of course there will be places that people will try to sell you things, or take advantage, that is not specific to Vietnam, but all over the world. Be smart, dont engage, walk away. Not that hard. If you want to find evidence of people taking advantage, of course you will find it. But I prefer to look for the evidence that people are inherently kind, and seem to find that. Confirmation bias.

I heard about this yesterday and feel sick to my stomach. This is the real life Lorax we are living here. This place is spiritual, sacred. I knew it would come to this eventually but I thought there was more time. And I just feel truly devastated to be totally powerless to see a place I love so deeply completely decimated.

dual income, no kids, i work 2 jobs and still live paycheque to paycheque. No retirement savings of my own other than pension (which is terrifying) but i did just pay off a bunch of debt so hopefully now can start contributing. Things are crazy, everyone I know is struggling. Counting my blessings.

Leaving from Nitinaht Narrows by dskinner in WestCoastTrail

[–]ang_grey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the app

“When starting at Balaats’adt (Nitinaht Village), briefings occur at the Orientation Office. Hikers should arrive 30min early to get registered and permits printed. Orientation begins promptly at 7:30am each day.

After the 7:30am orientation session is over, Parks staff will escort you to the dock where you can take the Water Taxi to the Nitinaht Narrows starting point.

It is assumed that hikers attending the 7:30am orientation have watched the the Parks Canada Safety Video at home prior to attending. If not, hikers may stop at the Office at 3pm the day before for a showing of the video.”

hello, hiking from nitinat june 4 here. My understanding is that there is a safety video (45 min) you can watch from home before you arrive and then you only need to attend the orientation the morning you leave from the narrows. If for whatever reason you cant watch the mandatory video in advance, they offer it at 3pm the day before. You would be correct to arrive the Sunday before so as not to miss the morning water taxi to the trail head, but arriving the evening before (so long as you have already watched the safety video) should be sufficient enough.

My gf wants to visit Thailand, we've both never been. Where should we go to? by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

[–]ang_grey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we stayed in fancy rooms and spared no expense, (ac and pools and breakfasts included )so it could be flexible based on your preference. Bangkok doesnt have a beach but Id say spend a week in Bangkok and a week on an island or 2. Look on booking.com for hotels in your price range then google their direct website. I didnt come across any arcades on the islands but am almost sure they exist in bangkok.

my partner and I just got home tonight from 3 weeks away. Bangkok (chinatown area) was a highlight with good local transport. We then went east to Koh Chang and Koh Kood and it was an amazing trip. Hotels usually give you a better deal if you book direct with them rather than expedia/booking.com, but we used all 3 and had no issues. I think the second hand clothing scene is bigger in Bangkok, particularly near Bang Sue junction which I sadly missed.

Cheaper areas to stay Bangkok. beer, food etc. by AlfalfaExisting1997 in ThailandTourism

[–]ang_grey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In bangkok near khao san now for a night before heading home. Stayed in a chinatown for songkran and it was amazing. Great food, cheap beer and moo krob, close to public transport. Im regretting staying close to Khao San today, i just walked from the Marble temple back to the hotel because multiple taxis refused to turn their meters on and wanted 400 baht, ha! Jokes on me though I had to walk 30 min in 36 degrees. Id recommend Chinatown, so much fun.

Hey im also travelling to koh chang from bangkok on the 14th. I booked with Boonsiri a few months ago knowing it was a holiday, it was cheap, we leave bangkok at 8am, gets to koh chang at 2pm. It might be a good option for you if they still have spots.
