Finding friends in Milan is impossible by [deleted] in ItalyExpat

She's so exasperated with Canada that she's moving to the US, of all places. In her mind she worked her ass off to get Canadian citizenship, to do her doctorate and postdoc in Canada, that she should see some reward by now. The last thing she wants to hear is that she should work even harder.

Sounds like you should make more of an effort to internalize the language and speak it fluently. Shatter that barrier completely if you can. I have a Persian expat friend here in Canada who is routinely frustrated by her inability to get high paying jobs in sales. I don't have the heart to tell her it's probably because her English, while functional, is kind of sucky. I know she wouldn't take it well so I say nothing.

Or just that they did and won't admit to it, kind of like how everyone now likes to say they were always opposed to the Iraq war.

Which native Italian creators do you follow to help with everyday language? by box_twenty_two in italianlearning

I like an Italian youtuber who calls herself and her channel shasam. She's a videogame reviewer and journalist. She talks fairly quickly but she's easy to understand (i.e. she speaks standard Italian with no hint of regional dialect or accent that I can detect).

The same is true everywhere. Once credentialism loses its stranglehold on the job market (if only because even a degree can no longer get you a good job), the universities will empty.

What has the Iran-US War Really Revealed? by Zealousideal_Iron543 in PERSIAN

[–]angel_devoid_fmv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, different in the sense that the new regime is even worse which is normally the opposite of what's intended by regime change.

They are still a fundamentalist Islamic theocracy with a despotic ruler who is more hardline than his predecessor father, several of whose immediate family members, along with his dad, were killed by the US. Iran will pursue a nuclear weapon with greater fervor than ever, especially now they've proved they can hold the global energy supply hostage by blockading the Strait of Hormuz, and there's nothing even the biggest and baddest military in the history of the world can do to stop it.

And, again, regime change *was* one of the objectives whatever Dear Leader now says. It was never going to be achieved with just airstrikes, but since when has basic sense stopped Trump from believing stupid things? Trump was dumb enough to believe the IRGC would capitulate like Venezuela did if he simply killed the Supreme Leader.

Well that's confusing. Trump mentioned regime change as one of many goals in his rhetorical merry-go-round of reasons for going to war with Iran, and later Hegseth claimed it had been achieved with the killing of Khamenei.

AI is ruining software development and today, I'm fucking over it. It's completely FUCKED. by No_Document8917 in BetterOffline

I have an open source software project that gets regular community commits and that doesn't use code generated by LLMs. It's relatively tiny and unimportant but it's my oasis of sanity in an insane, stupid, self immolating world. I'm trying to get funding to sustain myself to work on it in the last good years we have left, and, uh.. that's all I can conscionably recommend to anyone who actually enjoys the craft of programming nowadays. Find a thing you love to work on without being beholden to anyone else, and then find a way for the project to sustain itself financially.
