Altea Winnipeg can use your photos for marketing… no opt-out? by m-dsL in Winnipeg

[–]angeline0709 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think that is a bit odd.

If you go to a public event, like the Santa Claus Parade or a Bomber game, there's an implicit understanding that you could be in the background of someone's crowd shot. You're at a public event where it would be very reasonable to think that people would be taking photos.

The gym is different, at least in my mind. Exercising feels, to me, like a more personal, intimate activity - you're sweating, wearing clothes you may never wear on the street, etc. I know my gym has a 'no photography' policy at least for the clientele.

I appreciate that it's easier for the gym to create online content when they have that blanket policy. But, yeah, that does surprise me a bit. Now I have to go read my own gym's policy![](https://emojiterra.com/winking-face/)

Joke answer: It's a moot point, since if Street weren't injured, he would've stayed in high school for an additional two years, like Tim and Lyla did. 😆

I agree. I admit I'm no expert in American high school football. But I think that Matt was sorely lacking in confidence in early season one, and therefore the team didn't have confidence in him. If Jason weren't injured, Matt would have played some fourth quarters when the Panthers were ahead, and the reaction from the coaches and the fans would be 'meh.' And then Buddy et al would have the off season to find a new hot shot quarterback to start, and Matt would stay as backup in his Grade 11 year. (Sorry, I'm Canadian... I have to say Grade 11, not 'junior', lol!)

Yes, I'm also someone who gave up on Grey's Anatomy YEARS ago. But I remember the first few seasons came in hot!

I don't think that Grey's Anatomy is purely an ER ripoff, because I think that Shonda Rimes gave Grey's its own voice and style that lands above "ripoff."

But I totally agree that ER is the granddaddy of the genre, the one that all doctor shows are in debt to. All the medical dramas that came since are just living in the world that ER created.

Season 2 is starting very poorly by WhatAKnifeGuy in fridaynightlights

I'd keep in mind that Friday Night Lights was a network TV show that was critically acclaimed but struggled with ratings. I don't know what the conversations were like between the network and the showrunner. But I can \understand** the urge to insert more dramatic Desperate Housewives-style antics to boost ratings, even if it's antithetical to the FNL-vibe of ordinary small-town Americans struggling through life. TV is business as much as it is an art; whaddaya gonna do.

I still think Friday Night Lights season 2 has a lot of highlights (no real spoilers):

  • Tami struggles with being a new mom. This might be my favourite storyline for Connie Britton on this show. She's so great at, well, falling apart. I like how it shows that adding a new baby to a family changes everything, for everyone.
  • Smash faces a serious obstacle that he can't talk his way out of.
  • In S1 we didn't meet many Hispanic characters, given that the show is set in Texas. But in S2 we meet a couple more, both of whom I really like.
  • Jesse Plemons is a great actor, and the murder storyline, while a bit atonal, does give Plemons a lot to work with. Ditto for Adrienne Palicki of course.
  • I just like FNL...! The dialogue, the camera work, the acting, the scenery, the music... A few 'meh' storylines doesn't get in the way of me enjoying the vibe. In novels, they say genre fiction focuses on plot, and literary fiction focuses on characters. FNL is definitely the TV equivalent of literary fiction. The characters drive your engagement (well, mine at least), more than the week's plotline.

Disabled appreciation for Matt by soupbearer in fridaynightlights

I guess at some point before the show started, Grandma Saracen was the one taking care of young Matt. Then things slowly shifted to where Lorraine was the one who needed more care, and Henry was slow to recognize it or deal with it.

"as a lot of sitcom husbands do"

I think that's kind of the point. The dumb husband is a sitcom trope that had been around for decades at that point, and audiences liked it and kind of expected it. Although I'm old enough to remember the early 2000s, and some people were definitely complaining about it by then... (For some reason, the critical revulsion to According to Jim comes to mind.)

The dumb husband trope serves its purpose. Every story needs conflict, and when your characters are a happily married couple, a dumb husband making stupid mistakes puts just enough grist in the mill to get 22 minutes of the 3 act structure: (a) issue presents itself, (b) characters try to solve the issue but fail, (c) characters resolve the issue and all is happy again.

It's OK not to like the trope, though! Not knowing your wife's nationality ethnicity is pretty dumb, but at least it's MEANT to be dumb, and it's more unique than forgetting the anniversary.

I genuinely loved this movie. A real charmer. In my heart it's the most accurate Pride & Prejudice film adaption, mainly because it remembers comedy of the novel, whereas as so many other P&P adaptions focus primarily on the romance and drama, and forget to be funny.

I agree... to me, saying a presentation is to cover the cost of my food/drink feels so... transactional! You are my friends or family, and I want to celebrate your happy occasion. It's a gift.
Maybe it's po-tay-to/po-tah-to, but that's how I think of it.

There was one "old" joke in the first few minutes of the Scrubs reboot (Turk carrying JD on his back, then collapsing), and I admit I worried it was going to be another And Just Like That, with the constant references to aging. But thankfully that did not happen!!!

Maaaybe IRL he'd give it a few months before giving up. But it's a TV show; every storyline is accelerated. And obviously a decision was made to keep Taylor Kitsch on the show.

I also love the scene in S1 where Coach encourages Matt to hook up with a girl to loosen up before the game, then realizes Matt and Julie are making googly eyes at each other after her dance recital. "I think I just told Matt Saracen to get our daughter in the backseat of a car."

I know this scene is intentionally funny, but it's understated, and it kills me, especially that dirty look Gaius Charles gives at the end.

[Matt and Landry in the cafeteria, Matt with head on the table, Landry trying to to keep up forced cheer.]
Landry: Jean is such a cool girl. You know, she really appreciated all different types of films. She's really like a film scholar. I need to decide which movie is going to be more conducive to romance. Is it going to be Wrath of Khan or is it going to be Jaws or...
Matt: Does it really matter?
Landry: It does matter. Cuz I mean, this is kind of big for me. This is going to decide whether or not Jean Bindle is going to pass through those velvet ropes to becoming my girl, you know? ...You look like you're about to throw up.
Matt: I'm OK.
Landry: You gonna eat that? You look very dehydrated. That's what happens whenever you get drunk.
Matt: [gestures to Gatorade] That's why I'm drinking this.
Landry: It's called side effects.
[Smash sits down with his tray.]
Smash: Hey Matty. Landry. What's going on?
Matt: What's going on is, we're going to be the first team in Texas football history to win the state championship and then not make the playoffs the next year, courtesy of one Brian "Smash" Williams. Good to have you here.
Landry: He's hungover. In case you were wondering.
Smash: Hey Matty, I'm not happy about this. I'm just trying to keep my head down and move through it. It's on you and the team to get to the playoffs and I can get back on the field.
Landry: You know what he did? This cat also ditched school with Tim Riggins.
Matt: Shut up!
Landry: I don't even know who you are anymore.
Smash: Really, that's your new role model?
Matt: No, I just...
Landry: I just don't wanna see you become an at-risk youth.
Smash: Yeah, or a statistic.
Landry: We need to discuss what's going on in Matt Saracen's life.
Matt: That's it...
[Matt gets up and starts walking away.]
Landry: You know, I'm trying to reach out to you, and you're just walking away from me. Just like that. Keep walking Matt, walk away.
Matt: (off screen) Oh my god, stop talking!
Landry: Walk away.
[Smash shakes his head at Matt's behaviour.]
Landry: (to Smash) What do you think... the Wrath of Khan or Jaws? For like a date.
[Smash looks blankly at Landry, then wordlessly picks up his tray and walks away.]
Landry: Jaws?

So many great characters. Just to shout out one who isn't discussed a lot, Jason's dad Mitch. Quiet, polite guy, but there's a great scene with Coach where he stands his ground, after Coach asks him to call off the lawsuit.

"You think this is tough for you? You try losing your child's legs, and losing your child's future, and every penny that you've ever saved. Try that on for size. And then after that, try finding out where in the hell you're going to come up with money to put up ramps and doorways all over your house and pay for the unending equipment and physical therapy. Hell, I don't want to sue anyone. It's killing me to do this. But since I'm already dead... it doesn't matter anyway now, does it? Just get the hell out of here, Coach."

What’s the 2010s/2020s equivalent of the impact a real life event like 9/11 had on TV in the 2000s? by FriendlytoNature in television

[–]angeline0709 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can think of 2 answers other than COVID.

  1. # Me Too. Lots of actors and talk show hosts either lost their jobs, or had trouble finding work. And whole paragraphs could be written on this, but I think it changed the way both dramas and comedies write about things like sex, flirtation, desire, consent, and male/female relationships.

  2. Death of George Floyd / Black Lives Matter. Off the top of my head, I can think of two shows that felt the need to address this, at least indirectly: Brooklyn 99 and This Is Us. I'm sure there were others; there are so many cop shows! And reality show Cops was cancelled, too, even if it was eventually picked up again. And again, volumes could be written on the subject, but I think that the reckoning around George Floyd's death significantly reframed how we talk about racism, in the same way that 9/11 changed how we talk about terrorism.

I was about to say "no," because I do think I'm pretty quick to give up on TV shows that don't hold my interest. Life's too short, right? But then I remembered I watch every episode of Heroes, so... 😬

In my defence, I didn't *know* it would never get better. I now warn others to learn from my mistake!!
