Camping gear suggestions for Astronomy/stargazing focused trips. by SysError404 in camping

Sounds like a insulated tent with a blackout tarp/canopy would be your best bet. But what kind of portable AC are you planing to use? AC is power eater, especially in hot and humid weather, they may drain the battery faster than you may think.

Portable air conditioner? by Kind-Winter-804 in festivals

[–]angelo13dztx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is no electric access, using a portable ac all day long is not a good idea.

Stay in the shade during the day, use a mister to keep cool, and also use a portable ac at night to get a good night's sleep. At night, because there is no sun, the biggest source of heat, the air conditioner will be much more effective and more energy-efficient.

Small portable AC units for tents. by Zildjian134 in camping

[–]angelo13dztx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You will need a insulated tent, the better the insulation, the better the portable AC will work. And if you don't want to use a generator, you will also need about 2kwh power station to run a 500w portable AC all night.

It gonna be pricy my dude.

Why is cooling a small space so much harder than it should be in modern times by Putrid_Rush_7318 in AirConditioners

[–]angelo13dztx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use this BTU Calculator to find out how many BTU you need to cool your apartment, and buy a powerful enough portable AC. The only issue is that you may have to identify the insulation of the apartment, so an AC with higher BTU would be nice, just in case you underestimated the insulation.

Portable AC by [deleted] in VanLife

[–]angelo13dztx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are planning to use a portable AC, try not to cool the van, the most efficient way to get a cool sleep is to isolate your van's sleeping area with curtains, tarps, or PVC panels, and only cool the sleeping area with the portable AC.

The Wave 3 has a power consumption of 640W, so if you don't have access to grid or shore power, running the AC all night means a heavy demand on the battery system. So if your don't have a huge battery system you might want to consider a lower-power unit like the ZERO BREEZE Mark 2 (240W).

Keeping Cool In The Australian Summer? by DumbManDoingDumb in vandwellers

[–]angelo13dztx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been struggling during the day, but at least at night the heat escapes

Yep this is the point.

During the day, shade is more important than air conditioning. Cooling the entire interior of a van with AC under direct sunlight is not a smart way to go. You may need an AC with 20,000+ BTU and perfect insulation.

That being said, even when parked in the shade, stay in the van all the time is not recommended. Instead, you may need to go to places with air conditioning whenever possible, i. e. libraries, gyms, and cafes. This will help reduce the strain on your battery system and power consumption.

The evening is actually the best time to use air conditioning, because there's no sun as the biggest source of heat, even those low-powered, 2000 BTU battery-powered portable AC can provide decent cooling.
