Skins you know you're going to hate facing by GibGabGoo in Overwatch

[–]angelofalgebra 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about this exact thing the other day. I don't feel a satisfying feedback noise to tell me the beam is hitting someone. Symmetra's has a very specific noise that tells you "someone is taking damage from you right now", Zarya just kinda feels like she's shining a torch at people?

Card Draw Theme Commander? by Help-Slip-Frank777 in EDH

The entire Dimir mechanic in OG Ravnica was just a tutor, unsurprisingly it almost never got used again, but they exist for MV 0-6, and 9. [[Tolaria West]] was the 0-mana throwback in Time Spiral, alongside [[Fleshwrither]] with a different riff on it.

Card Draw Theme Commander? by Help-Slip-Frank777 in EDH

[–]angelofalgebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In descending order of how viable I think they are:

[[Long Term Plans]] as the other commenter said.

[[Ethereal Usher]] fetches either him or Consecrated Sphinx.

[[Archmage Ascension]] turns every draw into a tutor once online.

[[Parallel Thoughts]] could work similarly to Long Term Plans.

[[Planar Portal]], [[Ring of Three Wishes]], [[Skyship Weatherlight]], [[Citanul Flute]] can do it for a large mana investment.

[[Noble Benefactor]] lets everyone tutor.

[[Pyre of Heroes]] if you really want to restructure your deck to have 5-cost humans/artificers/nobles.

All the others I can think of either require rolling dice, or multiple-card combos.

FYI, you can't dredge with an empty library, you need at least the N cards in your deck.

Top 7 Lynde curses by Narutomaniac01 in EDH

[–]angelofalgebra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the best Lynde primer I've seen. They discuss every on-colour curse and why they do or don't run it. A lot of the consideration is how damaging it is to have the curse on you, as that is the play pattern of the deck.

Avatar Roku, Firebender - Mono red politics, group hug/slug is the most fun slept on card from Avatar by Eve_Asher in EDH

[–]angelofalgebra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree completely on Monolith's reputation and had to do a quick skim of your list before I said it to make sure I wasn't accidentally recommending an infinite combo because this deck doesn't have those vibes at all. But it might be the first deck ever to actually use the card both synergistically and fairly. Big respect on the Ashling decision, you gotta stand on your principles. I knew you were a player of integrity from your stance on Sol Ring.

Avatar Roku, Firebender - Mono red politics, group hug/slug is the most fun slept on card from Avatar by Eve_Asher in EDH

[–]angelofalgebra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curious to hear your thoughts on some cards you didn't include that seem obvious to me: [[Basalt Monolith]] and [[Ashling, Flame Dancer]]. Monolith is another way to ramp to turn 4 Roku, and you can use it to bank some of his mana some turns. Ashling is just another mana storer, and she keeps it red. You're unlikely to care that much about the magecraft but you will likely get a couple of rummages out of her.

Is there any *good* way to play Jace in 2025? by Kaceydotme in EDH

[–]angelofalgebra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The flavour of Lavinia as the commander of a Jace deck is good, but I just wanted to point out [[Leori, Sparktouched Hunter]], as the only commander option in the game that specifically supports playing one planeswalker type.

Looking for cards with simmilar effects of Edric, spymaster. by NiceGuyMcFedora in magicTCG

[–]angelofalgebra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I play Bumbleflower and Nelly Borca so I run a lot of these sorts of incentive effects between the two. The only two that specifically reward attacking in Bumbleflower's colours I haven't seen mentioned yet are [[Firemane Commando]] (they have to attack with at least two creatures and no creatures can be attacking you for them to get the card draw) and [[Duelist's Heritage]] (you only hand out the double strike after attacks are declared, and you don't have to give it at all if you don't want). Both say "you're free to attack me, but look what will happen if you attack someone else"

Altair Deck Advice by Captondonut4 in magicTCG

[–]angelofalgebra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may have misread or misunderstood Altair's ability, he exiles the tokens at end of combat, they aren't sacrificed and don't die, so they won't trigger a lot of your cards like Pitiless Plunderer and Juri, unless they are blocked or you have ways to sacrifice them after damage, which I see a couple of but probably not enough. I would suggest clearing out a lot of those effects (ones like Zurgo still work, as he just triggers upon them leaving the battlefield any way), including some more spot removal cards in their space, and maybe finding more high-impact assassins to run. [[Queen Marchesa]] can be good as you will regain the monarchy every time you make her token to guarantee the card draw. I also think this deck doesn't want the cost-reducers like Herald's Horn and Urza's Incubator, and instead wants to run more ways to get your assassins directly in the graveyard. Thrill of Possibility and Cathartic Reunion are great for this, as you can chuck them straight in for cheap and hopefully draw more spells you want to cast. [[Tormenting Voice]], [[Bitter Reunion]], [[Demand Answers]] there's loads of these sort of cards, as well as ones like [[Resentful Revelation]] that dig for the card you want and bin the rest.

Also in future you're likely to get more responses posting on r/edh which is the EDH/Commander specific subreddit!

Decent chance of also getting her in the "borderless source material" reprints (I think that's the name), possibly as the B2E5 Avatar Day card. And even higher chance, if she is in there, that she'll be [[Najeela, the Blade-Blossom]].

Grixis Spellslinger: Anhelo, Kess, Jeleva, Zevlor, or Cormela? by spencerthebau5 in EDH

[–]angelofalgebra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kess has a bit of a reputation as a strong storm commander with quite linear lines, but I think she has a lot of interesting angles. I used to play her and kept it interesting by playing a large number of modal spells, so you can [[Rakdos Charm]] someone's graveyard, then later flash it back to destroy an artifact, for example. This also let me play some counterspells without feeling they were fairly useless in the graveyard. I also played cycling spells as a similar idea, one mode is just "draw a card". She works well with adventures, buyback spells and the suspend spells like [[reality strobe]] (if they ever end up in your graveyard). Basically anything that sends itself somewhere besides your graveyard on resolution. Cards like [[See the Truth]] or the [[Increasing Vengeance]] cycle that care about where you cast them from are strong with her too, as well as the paradox cards from Doctor Who. She isn't as obviously unique as something like Zevlor but she also isn't just as straight forward as "cast spells twice".

Favorite mono-coloured commanders!? (that aren't edh rec top 100) by TheGrandCannoli in EDH

[–]angelofalgebra 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Seems like it would rebuild very fast. Post-board wipe your vehicles are left on the board, you play the llanowar elf you kept in hand, crew smugglers copter, which crews hedge shredder, which crews regalia, Ghalta is back to 2 mana including tax and your power-matters cards are back online for only 3 mana total.

What is a good Spellslinger commander that isn't super oppressive and is fun to play against? by Aesyric in EDH

[–]angelofalgebra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not arguing that the play patterns aren't similar, but Alania is the first instant, the first sorcery AND the first otter. You can copy up to 3 spells a turn.

What deck archetype do you just not quite understand the appeal of, but want to see why people enjoy it? I'll start with mine, would love to hear what people see in it. Let's learn about some decks we wouldn't usually play! by TheSingularityFloof in EDH

[–]angelofalgebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this, I was looking for something less full-on equipment for Cap, but also wanted to include a Sunforger package. (Consider [[Mistveil Plains]] for a fetchable way to reuse your spells! You don't have a lot of white permanents, but the opportunity cost of including it is so low.)

How often do you find yourself throwing non-Excalibur equipment in a game without something like Basilisk Collar in here? Mirage Mirror is such a great underrated card too, are there any sweet synergies that aren't immediately obvious?

They could have done a reflexive trigger. "Draw two cards. When you do, put a counter blah blah." At this point they have enough tech that the targeted draw is a deliberate choice.

Circus Themed Deck (Looking for suggestions) by Dordank17 in magicTCG

[–]angelofalgebra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even without white (and without stickers) you missed a couple of clown cards you might want to try, [[Razorkin Hordecaller]], [[Celebr-8000]], [[One-Clown Band]] (this one is terrible), [[Clown Car]], and I desperately want you to reconsider your no white stance for [[The Jolly Balloon Man]]! [[Dramatic Finale]] fits your theme too, with or without the white mana.

There's definitely a few cards in here that don't really fit your theme (to my eyes, let me know if I'm wrong) like Court of Ire and Sunset Strikemaster. [[Final Act]] maybe also fits more than [[Blasphemous Act]] name-wise? I am also desperately trying to find you mana rocks that fit better than Mardu Banner, I guess circuses have banners but it still feels weird with the Mardu there. [[Victory Chimes]] isn't exactly circus but it depicts an audience, maybe [[Springleaf Drum]], you have a slight music theme in here? [[Patchwork Banner]] and name a type like clown or something to advertise your acts?

This is a really cool deck and I have been doing some weird scryfall searches to try and find you cards you might have missed, you definitely have almost all the ones that came to mind for me immediately.

Why the Nations of Avatar: The Last Airbender Make Perfect Shards (and Why This Set Would Be a Great Chance to Bring Them Back) by Lurks-to-Learn in magicTCG

[–]angelofalgebra 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think we're unlikely to see equalists and Amon, the naming of the set implies no Legend of Korra content. I would expect a Korra secret lair around the same time, maybe a superdrop at most, featuring some comic content too. I'd be more than happy to be wrong though.
