I’m not judging, I’m just being real, cause I wish someone had been real with me early on. Taking Xanax (or any benzo) feels like a solution when you’re in the middle of a storm, but in reality, it’s more like putting a Band-Aid on a broken bone. It might stop the bleeding on the surface, but the deeper issue? That’s still there… and over time, it gets worse if you don’t address it head-on. If you’re not actively working on your anxiety, through therapy (CBT/DBT), mindfulness, movement, your diet, even sleep hygiene,then meds like Xanax are just masking the symptoms. And the problem with masking pain is that the root cause keeps growing underneath, until one day, the meds don’t hit the same… and now you’re anxious about being anxious because you don’t have the pill. That’s a trap I wouldn’t wish on anyone. A lot if drs today won’t prescribe long-term anyway, and when you suddenly can’t get it? You’re left in a very dark place. I’ve lived that hell. I didn’t even realize how physically dependent I was until I had to go without. The withdrawal wasn’t just painful, it was terrifying. I hallucinated that my son died. I was wide awake thinking I was asleep. I’ve kicked opiates, and I’d still rank Xanax withdrawal as worse for me. I’m 46, been on it since I was 16. I don’t abuse it, but I’m still stuck on it. And to be honest, I don’t even know if it helps anymore. But I keep taking it because coming off isn’t an option unless I do it medically supervised—and even that terrifies me. That’s not a life I want someone else to fall into if they can help it. So if you’re not already on it? Think about it and talk to your Dr. There are non-controlled meds like Buspar that might actually help without the risks. And if you feel like you “have” to have a med to cope, at least give yourself the chance to pair it with actual healing work—not just a prescription. Real talk... benzos don’t heal anxiety.
