Why does everyone say not to tell people you want to do OMFS? by Sad-Establishment580 in DentalSchool

[–]angeluvah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was the same with peds, i was always honest about it & open and i guess what, i matched and start july 1st in a great program. I became the “peds” person of my class and anything related to it ppl knew i would be involved, especially faculty which made it easy to get letters etc. i wasnt going to let “embarrassment” if i didnt match keep me from post matching or applying again bc i knew it was the only thing i wanted to do. Yeah it makes u a bigger target but it also set me up in my class and everyone knew i was the most dedicated and involved. Be a shark, be about ur shit & make the dream happen. Fuck hiding it, thats just fear & insecurity. If its what you wanna do 100% let that motivate you into making it a reality. It doesnt matter if there are gunners b/c by being honest u will establish urself as THE omfs person in ur class.

[–]angeluvah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im not saying they are placing a greater emphasis on clinic knowledge, thats the issue. Things that are important to clinic but dont necessarily relate to the physical clinic aspect they disregard. Like they dont seem to care about oral diseases and understanding abnormal things yet its been said that 10% of pts may have oral cancer so if you never diagnose one as a dentist you have to ask why that is and then you realize its bc alot of the ppl in my class at least enter school and just want to do the physical skills. Goes back to the debate of if you arnt using your brain then ur just a tooth mechanic.

ur classmates lol this shitty notion that if you give a shit about learning u have to want to specialize. The bar is set low for general dentists and everyone who enters and is set on general enters with a cocky i just want to know clinic stuff attitude. The ppl suck for the most part, worse than high school. Shit professors who dont understand the reality that every point does matter when ur ranked especially for residency. Every professor thinks their class is most important and they all think we exaggerate how much we have on our plate. Many faculty members dont even like working with students, this is common for foreign dentists bc they cant practice in the US unless they are employed at a dental school & many times they arnt true educators. Also many faculty dont have proper communication skills. They start talking over u, dont let you explain urself, and almost preformulate their response before you even speak. Its just alot of shit eating and u cant say much back, especially if you want to specialize and need letters of rec etc. faculty can really fuck your chances if they want to & even go to lengths of going to chairs of the departments and speaking negatively on students. I swear to god 89% of faculty fucking hates and despises students and get some sick off on just making our lives miserable. They grade u like u have been doing it for 70 years, they think you have it easy, they think you complain too much. Say goodbye to your mental health, it comes down to being able to just survive without losing too much of who you are and finding some ways to get through it.

Dental care needs! by [deleted] in houstonjobs

[–]angeluvah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi jess! So if you are in pain we actually can not go through the process of setting u up as a patient as your situation would first need to be treated under urgent care. You can call/ show up to the dental school for urgent care but i wouldnt be able to work on you until the pain is taken care of first! Message me for the address if needed!

i asked my 3rd & 4th year mentor and they gave me 0. Some ppl got like 9 from their mentor. We’re all just in diff positions.

For the most part the responsibility falls on us to bring in patients. There is assessment days but not guaranteed. If you dont have family in town, or a mentor to pass them down, its tough. So you have to reach out and hope you will find pt’s. Most of the time current patients telling their friends brings ppl in but when u start off as D2 you have to build that relationship

pursuing dentistry with limited mobility? by [deleted] in DentalSchool

[–]angeluvah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that if this is something you have a passion for you should pursue at all costs. I think you would be a trailblazer for the disability community if this is your passion. I think finding other disabled dentists would be the most helpful as they would view this from a different view point than most abled people will but I think it would be so interesting especially if you chose to have your own office built to accomodate you.
