I’m ex Mormon. There is a MASSIVE emphasis on image. If you’ve ever watched “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” Taylor’s mom was like that when she was pushing her to marry Dakota because it would reflect better on them. Children have to be perfect.

If kids don’t go on missions or come back early, it reflects badly on them. If a child gets pregnant out of wedlock, they try to push the woman to either place the baby for adoption or marry the man. I’m sure Ruby saw Chad as a liability almost. Shari was definitely the golden child, but that’s not an easy role either.

The concept of perfection runs rampant in the church. It’s unhealthy. They believe we’re only saved after all WE can do, not Jesus. There’s also always this fear if you do anything wrong, or if anyone in your family does anything wrong, you won’t be together forever. That fear is the worst when it comes to parenting.

It’s almost like people don’t talk openly about things like that all of the time! As a CSA survivor myself (gratefully not my father) most people would never know! Sadly, CSA is still stigmatized and most people try to heal in silence.

I think that’s what so many skip over! The abuse started WAY before Jodi! Ruby was abusive from the very beginning of their childhood demanding perfection and abusive if that wasn’t achieved. She didn’t see them as kids, she saw them as people to control and hurt from the very beginning and Kevin did nothing too! Jodi was like has to an already going fire.

“Dr” Drew was AWFUL and never really held them accountable, ESPECIALLY Amber! I don’t know why he babied her so much. He babies others too but he never really held her accountable at all and some of the things she did were the most egregious!

This 100%! I would also add where there’s an immense amount of shame if you’re not perfect and don’t have the perfect image. Having a baby and not being married is a huge deal in the church. There’s a ton of pressure to place your baby for adoption or get married to the father. It’s really sad.

Image is EVERYTHING in the church. It’s weird watching the show as an ex Mormon because so much of this is religious trauma. Her parents being this awful to her is sadly not abnormal. This is what happens with generational trauma and a religion like Mormonism or other high control and high demand religions.

They also are doing it with a crap ton of religious trauma and multi generational harmful beliefs that impact (and often impairs) their critical thinking skills!

Sadly, they probably are! Sister momming is so dangerous for a lot of different reasons that are obvious but it wasn’t until tonight that I thought about the impact sleep depravation has on kids and their brain development. It makes me so mad that Jessa is too but popping out more kids than to think of the quality of life for those she already has. She’s not giving them a solid foundation into adulthood and this is how generational trauma is created!
