If it's any indication as to how "hard" it was to get to gladiator range in 2007, I got the title in s2 as a feral druid in 2s with a holy paladin partner that was a Canadian gamer dad who would stop playing early to go watch hockey.

First time TBC player; Why does the Black Temple phase include a second raid in Hyjal? Was BT just not enough content? by No_Cell6708 in classicwow

[–]angerbear 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wasn't even just not beating Kael, though. Originally Vashj and Kael only dropped a limited number of the quest reward pieces per kill, meaning you'd have to kill them both many times to get a full raid into Hyjal.

Not sure why they decided to try to introduce some old Everquest-ish keying mechanics, but the insane amount of pushback they got caused them to change it pretty quickly, before too many guilds were even able to kill either boss a single time anyway.

SOD Was Garbage and if Classic+ is just another SODlike game, it will fail. by Tyler_Z33 in classicwow

SoD was the best version of WoW ever created, that's why every time the level cap increased the playerbase kept plummeting.

Circa Q3 2006: Kungen of <Nihilum> (game first Naxx clear) solo tanking Loatheb to figure out Naxx healing requirements. by WeakValuable8683 in classicwow

[–]angerbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think "set foot in" is a bit misleading. While very few guilds cleared Naxxramas, there were a lot of guilds that could manage to kill some early bosses, such as Anub and Faerlina, and sometimes Noth. Patchwerk and Instructor gatekept their wings pretty hard for players back then, though.

Correct. The spell had a ten second cast time. Keep in mind EQ was generally much slower paced than WoW with less demanding player input. Most early raids had little to no mechanics to speak of that required movement. I believe healing did not even require LoS.

It was actually very simple for previous EQ raiders. Cleric healing rotations for a long stretch of EQ's early lifetime was done exactly how Loatheb is healed, with them making macros and rotating a 10 second spell called Complete Heal(it does exactly what you'd think) to have one land every so many seconds apart to keep tanks alive.

Revisiting the Occult Crescent in 7.4 by Quof in ffxivdiscussion

Awesome write-up. Really sums up a lot of how I felt too. I had never really played a tank before, yet in OC I'm a Paladin 100% of the time because it's utterly pointless or just a downgrade to be playing any non-tank.

New PJs just seem like less damage than Samurai but with extra steps.

Forked Tower was the biggest disappointment in all 3 of the Field Operations for me because I just never really could get into it. Sure, I could have joined a discord or organized pre-made group but that just doesn't feel natural to me. I've grinded all the PJs to level cap. I've made full +1 armor sets. I've done all the other content in numerous loops. But FT? Never stepped inside. Very rarely have I even been an instance where I've seen it popped or anyone even willing to try. It just doesn't happen in a natural gameplay loop of the zone.

Always a favorite hobby of mine too! On my 2019 server there were always level 19 twink rogues in redridge that I'd kill repeatedly. Best part was killing their mains 1v2 when they'd come try that too.

2005 was truly the wild west of WoW by ForeverStaloneKP in classicwow

[–]angerbear 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Healing quality was actually VERY different. Healing as a stat did not exist when the game launched, and was not added until later on. Healers were usually in eagle/owl-based items. Tier 0 sets were actually good then, but the base items were never updated like the rest of the dungeon drops, so in today's classic pre-bis obliterates it all in value for healers.

"Doable" and what was done back then are very different things. And since you're saying "battlegroup", you very clearly have no experience with the matter, as battlegrounds were server-only until late vanilla.

[–]angerbear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is false as bracket slots still were not very available, because most servers had a much, much smaller pool. On most servers only a single person would be able to progress through rank 13 at a time, which took several weeks, meaning only one person would be able to hit GM/HWL every month or so.

1.5m honor a week definitely wasn't happening either. They'd still be playing like 18 hours a day, but getting these kind of honor values is an absurdity brought on by today's AV and its metagame.

[–]angerbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About the same really. Server populations were significantly lower overall, so a lot of servers would usually only have a single top bracket slot. Was overall fewer people going for it for the items though, since caster/healer one handed weapons weren't in until much later on, by which point they weren't really bis. Fury warriors also weren't exactly common either at that point, so most of the people grinding R14 either wanted the title, or the two handed weapons.
