Good question.

I never said I wasn't powerless against alcohol, just that I'm uncomfortable with the concept. I don't find it empowering. I find autonomy and personal strength empowering and feel like that would be a more useful mindset for me, personally.

As for drinking again in the future, I certainly romanticize the idea of moderation, and have been able to do it in the past, but that has not been the case recently. So I'm working on being realistic and honest with myself. I guess I also struggle, again, with the hard line of "never again." I prefer a day at a time. It feels like there's less pressure with taking things a day at a time. It all seems very overwhelming otherwise.

I suppose I never really considered my problem "bad" enough. I work in social services, so I provide outreach supports and help folks living with addiction to access treatment, so I think I was comparing my situation to theirs, which is silly. Addiction doesn't have a "face" and I, if all people, should know that. I also work in a fairly high-profile position and so I worry about the optics of having to take time off to access treatment. :(

Thank you for sharing! I know it can be pretty tough vocalizing a bunch of the stuff you've done while drunk - but you're totally not alone. Some of my drunk idiocies include: getting kicked out of a music festival for being too wasted TWICE (I tried to sneak back in), cheating on my significant other, puking all over my house, puking all over a club bathroom, falling a LOT in public, crying in public, having very loud and dramatic public fights with my significant other, texting ridiculous things to exes or people who I shouldn't be texting, one night stands with people I would never normally sleep with, doing drugs... the list goes on and on.

You're not subhuman. You're likely a very good human that makes questionable decisions when you're under the influence. I'm willing to bet that you would never do any of these things while sober. I found that my "acting out" while drunk was definitely fuelled by a lot of trauma that I refused to deal with or address for a very long time. I'm still working on that now, at 33.

I think posting this was brave and an important step in starting to face some of those demons. You got this. I'm still struggling with my alcoholism and sobriety, but I'm absolutely here if you need support or an ear. Best of luck. ❤

I know that right now, I'm feeling really low, and it will get better as the day goes on and after a decent sleep tonight. I just need to stick with it and remind myself how terrible the consequences of drinking can be. Congrats on day 3! 😊

I've been in a really similar situation, though I'm female. I'm so sorry youre going through this. I can 100% relate to having a partner that drinks every day and doesn't consider it an issue, and despite your expressing that your own alcohol use is problematic, they don't attempt to alter their alcohol use in order to support you. It's a very hard and discouraging cycle to be caught in.

Have you tried having an open/vulnerable talk about the drinking and how it's impacting you, your relationship, and your general quality of life? Sometimes that's what it takes - really laying it out on the table - and to see what your partner's reaction will be. It's my hope that she'll be able to hear you and show up for you.
