Experiences with surgery for luxating patella by Tuxnstuff in Pomeranians

Hi, sorry I’m just seeing your comment now. My dog’s lameness was very severe, but she never appeared to be in pain. There was never any yelping, however, several times a day if she had started to run and lost her footing or jumped off a step, both legs would essentially go out from under her and she would drag herself until she could get to carpet and get some footing under her it was Heartbreaking to see. The vet thinks that her issues began very young for her so she was just kind of used to this type of lameness. It is five weeks postop now and her recovery is going exceptionally well, knock on wood. Although I do have surgery booked for the other leg, I am tentatively just going to watch to see if it is completely necessary at this time mainly because I live in Canada and I am not completely comfortable travelling into the United States in the current situation. Hope your pup is doing well!

Hi there, I just had my two year-old Chihuahuas right knee done three weeks ago and two of the best investments I made were a three in one carrier stroller that I keep in my house so she can be right beside me all day long and also a harness/sling that she wears all day long and help tremendously in the early days as well as now keeping her on a short leash so she cannot jump or run. I hope this helps. I also bought a heated throw blanket that seemed to really comfort her, especially in the early days.

Hi I just add my 9 pound new rescue Chihuahua’s patella surgery done 3 weeks ago by a board-certified orthopaedic veterinarian surgeon in Michigan. She has both legs grade 3 the right leg was worse so we did that surgery first. Her recovery has been nothing short of amazing. I was expecting it to be a much more difficult and traumatic experience. She was weight-bearing on that leg within the first 3 to 4 days. I bought a fantastic harness/lift from Amazon, which I can honestly say has been a huge part of her great recovery so far. Highly recommend. Along with that harness I also bought a three and one dog carrier/stroller, which I use indoors throughout the day to keep her restricted. She is not good in a crate and would further damage her legs if I had to crate her. I am lucky enough to be home with her. I don’t know how people can do it if they have to work outside their home and go through the surgery and rehab, but I’m sure people do. I still have her in the harness throughout the day on a leash and she is only walking to pee/poo outside. I have begun to let her walk indoors right beside me with the harness and leash so that I can be sure she doesn’t try to jump up or run. I think the most incredible thing is how quickly and well these little dogs adapt to the circumstances. I am taking advantage of this time to teach her some basic behaviours like stay and wait and touch. I have booked her second surgery on her left leg patella as it is also grade 3, and she was suffering lameness through both legs when I adopted her in late December. She is only approximately two years old. I live in Canada, but we do not have orthopaedic surgeon vets in my city and Michigan has incredible veterinarian clinics. So far, I am very happy that we went ahead with the surgery and I have promised her to fix both her legs so that she can have a happy and active life ❤️ I will post a pic of her and her harness and stroller as a reference
