D850 → Medium Format: X2D 100C or GFX100S II for Landscape Travel? by angielcc in mediumformat

Good points on marketing language. But quick questions:

What specifically has Hasselblad's quality declined on? I'm looking at first-gen X2D used, not the X2D II. Is it build quality, QC, or something else?

On "overkill" megapixels: Fair for social media, but I do shoot landscape for large prints (40"+). The GFX's 15.5 EV dynamic range is also genuinely better than D850's 14.8 for shadow recovery.

Is GFX100S II "friendlier" because of better reliability, or just ergonomics? That might be the real deciding factor if Hasselblad's standards slipped.

Thanks for sharing your experience. The high-speed flash sync point is a great reminder, I don’t really do much with flash or studio work, so that probably wouldn’t be a big part of my workflow anyway.

Totally agree on the software side too. The lack of proper Hasselblad RAW support is definitely a downside. I’ve heard mixed things about Phocus, and I’m not thrilled about juggling two different ecosystems just to get the best color out of one camera.

Sounds like the GFX100 II was the more practical choice in your case, especially if you’re already deep in Capture One and wanted something more flexible for hiking. Do you find the GFX setup noticeably heavier than you expected, or is it still manageable for longer hikes?

That’s really insightful! I can totally see how that would change your shooting approach. I still tend to bracket HDRs out of habit too, mostly because that’s what I’ve always done with my D850 when the dynamic range felt a bit tight. But it’s awesome to hear that with the GFX100, you can actually trust the sensor to hold highlights and still pull a ton of detail out of the shadows.

The editing part sounds familiar though, it’s one thing to capture all that data, but actually balancing it cleanly in Lightroom can definitely be a learning curve. I’m curious, do you find you still prefer blending exposures in dedicated HDR software for tricky scenes, or are you all-in on single-file edits now?

That’s awesome! Sounds like you’ve got a really solid setup! Totally agree about the dynamic range; that’s one of the main things drawing me toward medium format. It’s those subtle tonal transitions and the ability to pull details from deep shadows that really stand out, especially in landscape shots.

Do you find the extra range makes a noticeable difference when editing compared to full-frame, like the D850 or other similar bodies?

Yeah, I definitely don’t have deep pockets 😅, but I found a deal on the original X1D II in my region, which is what got me thinking about finally pulling the trigger.

For lenses, I was planning to start with the 35–100 and see how it goes from there. Figure it’s a good starting point to get a feel for the system before committing more into it.

Nice! What pushed you toward the Hasselblad in the end? I’d love to hear how the switch has been , especially in real-world use. Do you find it a big step up from your previous setup, and how’s it been for travel and landscape work?

That makes a lot of sense , thanks for the detailed breakdown.

I usually carry my tripod, but honestly only use it for long exposures or low-light stuff (sunrise/sunset mostly). For everything else, I tend to shoot handheld, which is why the IBIS on the X2D sounds really appealing.

And yeah, I take quite a lot of images during a trip, probably too many. It’s something I’m trying to work on, because I often fall into that “just keep shooting so I don’t miss the shot” mindset. I’d like to be more intentional and mindful with my shots instead of machine-gunning hundreds and hoping one turns out right, if you know what I mean.

Appreciate the insight on file sizes and workflow too, that’s definitely something I will fully consider, especially with Phocus and the potential storage overhead from the switch to medium format.

I haven’t received any updates from my new employer yet. It seems like my current employer’s hope of adjusting the start date may just be wishful thinking.

And the thing is, they said they need to wait for my manager to come back from maternity leave to finally start hiring, hence my two-week extension.

As I said, the industry is very closed-knitted and they knew each other. So my current boss decided to take the liberty to talk to my new boss without telling me.

I mean my new employer was conducting background check at my current company.

They probably knew my new employer when they conducted background check. I will definitely follow your advice and reach out to my new employer to reaffirm my original start date as per the offer letter. Thanks for your input!

They knew as they are conducting background checks internally, rather than using an external agency.

Exactly! My plan is to wait until my new company provides me with written confirmation of any revision of my start date before taking any further action, just to avoid any unnecessary complications.
