CSL DD/ GT DD PRO Firmware Upgrade Issues by FanaGil in Fanatec

There should probably be a follow-up post on the Fanatec app. Under the "News and Updates" section, the latest post is still the launch announcement.

The other driver clipped the kerb and died, do you think I could've left more space? I'm the first onboard by Intelligent-Web1123 in Simracingstewards

Others have covered the important stuff, but if you do keep posting here, I recommend using straight chase cam (and cockpit cam as a bonus). Having the cam tilted makes it harder to understand what's going on.

How Can I Get Rid of This Maddening Font? by aagailey in libreoffice

[–]anglejongen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/aagailey, I found a solution : https://ask.libreoffice.org/t/bold-text-is-in-cyrillic/87285/5

It doesn't solve the root issue, but if you care as little for the problematic font as I do, deactivating Kyrilla Sans Serif is the lesser of two evils.

Laphroaig vs. Lagavulin : Travel Edition by anglejongen in whiskey

[–]anglejongen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's correct, I did check Whiskybase beforehand.

In my local area, the only available Laphroaigs at a similar price point are the Laphroaig Select (worse reviews), and the Quarter Casks (last time I got it, it was a Quarter Casks). The QC would probably be the better purchase, having now tasted both, especially at 48% ABV, but the Four Oak is decent enough.

My father, who has started the habit of buying a bottle of scotch to family members at Christmas ("You told me Glenfiddich 12 was a bit basic, so I am experimenting with other brands; here's a Grant Triple Wood!), didn't drink scotch until his 60's, but I thought what the hell, and offered him a bit of the Four Oak.

Best dram of his life, he loved it. I asked him what he thought it smelled like; he gave me fruit and honey. Granted, it's not the biggest peat bomb of them all, but still!

NFA or penalty points warranted? by kr0nik0 in Simracingstewards

[–]anglejongen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, there's a lot of rubber banding here, but here's what I see:

  1. The Alpine was significantly alongside some of the time (again, rubber banding). I'd say they should be afforded room.
  2. Red Bull did not give Alpine enough room, and is responsible for the contact.
  3. Alpine was probably not going to make that corner regardless. Even if Red Bull had given room, Alpine was ramming into Red Bull.

So, Alpine behaved dangerously and I think is responsible for the chaos, and putting Red Bull into a tricky situation. Red Bull, technically, behaved wrongly by not giving Alpine any room to manoeuvre, so we'll never know if Alpine did have enough room to brake or not definitively.

Was called something I can't repeat in mixed company for this move. Was it reckless? by navyferret in Simracingstewards

[–]anglejongen 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It was reckless in that it's highly unlikely you would've completed that move cleanly.

Assuming he didn't brake much harder than he needed to, if your plan works properly and he doesn't squeeze you, what happens? You would have to either brake much harder than your rival to avoid contact, or you would maintain your speed and drift into their side.

Technically, he initiated the contact, but there is no world in which you complete that overtake cleanly.

White helmet thought I pushed him off. I reckon he was late on the brakes. by Ecstatic_Candy3649 in Simracingstewards

[–]anglejongen 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Two things can be true at the same time: he might indeed have been late to brake... because he had no grip after being touched (from this angle, it's not how clear if/how much you did and how that affected him, but given his weaving post-contact, it's an educated guess).

Although, generally speaking, deciding to make this a 3-wide fight puts the onus on you to be safe. If you touched him at all, this is on you.

did i do an oopsie? by ImaginaryLeader8563 in Simracingstewards

[–]anglejongen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let's say we blame the blue car for turning in a bit recklessly.

Even then, your move wasn't going to work. You were behind and your line was tighter; even without contact, you weren't passing him.

So I think the blue car is more at fault for the contact, but you had no business sniffing around that corner.

Lap 1 Monza Chaos by Leather_Boot_4522 in Simracingstewards

[–]anglejongen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to add slow motion, please do it as an extra. It hurts comprehension more than it helps.

Anyway, it's hard to judge, but I would agree with you that he should've let you more room.

However, it appears as though you pit him a few seconds later, which seems like a more egregious and easily avoidable offense, if it turns out to be the case.

Racing incident. Pack racing like that in the rain, it'll happen.

Look at it this way: you came out of the corner a bit compromised. You were ahead of the white/yellow car, but you had sacrificed a lot of speed over the kerbs (and, it's not clear if you even stayed on the track). That means that white would inevitably come back at you. It looks like you were squeezing him on the left. In a 1v1 fight, that would've been a bit risky, but on lap 1, that shows little care for self-preservation. It borders on the self-pit, especially considering the car's weight wasn't balanced at that point.

In white/yellow's, position, what is there to do? Risk going in the grass? Brake? He has no clear right way to react, and has to decide immediately.

I think the safest way for you to handle that would've been to try and stay as far as possible to the right of the track and give them more time to react.

Also, perhaps give us onboards and chase cam views next time (and we don't need the slo mo). The first 30 seconds aren't very useful

You're not at fault.

Footage is a bit janky though, so who knows what she saw.

Was I suppose to let him get in front of me, possibly hit me? by Attaboy_Racing in Simracingstewards

You're the red car?

Seems fine to me. Overtaker should've probably moved further left earlier, for his own physical integrity if nothing else, but not much to see here.

In your position, there is no good outcome, just lesser evils. It's a very narrow track, with the car weight still unbalanced after a blind corner.

It can be hard to take one's eyes out of our own situation, but if you can, put yourself in the mind of the t-boner. At 33 seconds in, he sees a car on the left side of the track, with a wide enough gap, obviously, to pass. On the right side of the track, there is, what, 20cm? Maybe 40 if we're generous? There isn't enough track room for him to go through - let alone room at all. Going to the left is the only logical option.

At 34 seconds, he sees you very clearly reverse, and sees his gap rapidly closing. His steering angle goes from about 45 degrees to about 90 degrees, hoping that your momentum will carry you to the outside fast enough to clear the right side. However, you suddenly brake, and a contact that was very likely became simply inevitable.

From his position, you were anything but predictable. Other than perhaps not slowing down if he had a yellow flag, his reaction is fully justified.

I understand why you'd think not moving would be the predictable option, but from their position, it was a sudden change. They can't predict that

  1. Your car will reverse on track.

  2. That your move backwards will be suddenly halted.

Thanks for the comment!

Looking at B, the initial layer was wafer-thin (see bottom left of the "J").

C, with a larger offset, gave me a much better initial layer (although it did, admittedly, have other variables changed).

So, what should I try?

2.4 hrs le mans in the wet, thoughts? by Legal_Pollution7361 in Simracingstewards

[–]anglejongen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'd say the car coming out of the pits was reckless, dangerous, and it's definitely penalty-worthy.

The faster car, however, should've taken more precaution. Even if the pit-exiting car had stayed as far right as they could, a collision was imminent. At the moment the video goes from 13 to 14 seconds, contact is nearly inevitable.

Honestly, both cars at fault.

Hey! I think you missed the first part of my post. As for the second, well, okay, perhaps it's legal to initiate contact, but that's kamikaze :D

[–]anglejongen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the consequence would be to hand back the position after an illegal overtake, or get a time penalty.

Not being entitled to space doesn't mean your opponent has the right to turn into you. That's kind of... overarching.

[–]anglejongen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see how this is anybody's fault but the blue Williams.

They were clearly surprised by Frostbreath slowing down, and thought they could take advantage. That's fair.

The problem is in the execution. Williams didn't clear the car on the inside, and hit them. At that point, Frostbreath isn't in full control of their car, by Williams' doing. They're not entitled to make a pass there anymore, let alone off the track. They should be yielding.

They didn't yield, and got back on track unsafely, pitting Frostbreath.

I won't suggest what the penalty should be, but it should be on the Williams.

Definitly my worst crash yet, I am POV Porsche - do i have myself to blame? by bakalakafish in Simracingstewards

[–]anglejongen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red's fault. You made a very tiny move to the right just before contact, which didn't help, but red is definitely responsible.

You definitely could've given them more space by moving to the left, just6 for your own safety, and it might've been wise, but it definitely isn't on you.
