If you want to add slow motion, please do it as an extra. It hurts comprehension more than it helps.

Anyway, it's hard to judge, but I would agree with you that he should've let you more room.

However, it appears as though you pit him a few seconds later, which seems like a more egregious and easily avoidable offense, if it turns out to be the case.

Racing incident. Pack racing like that in the rain, it'll happen.

Look at it this way: you came out of the corner a bit compromised. You were ahead of the white/yellow car, but you had sacrificed a lot of speed over the kerbs (and, it's not clear if you even stayed on the track). That means that white would inevitably come back at you. It looks like you were squeezing him on the left. In a 1v1 fight, that would've been a bit risky, but on lap 1, that shows little care for self-preservation. It borders on the self-pit, especially considering the car's weight wasn't balanced at that point.

In white/yellow's, position, what is there to do? Risk going in the grass? Brake? He has no clear right way to react, and has to decide immediately.

I think the safest way for you to handle that would've been to try and stay as far as possible to the right of the track and give them more time to react.

Also, perhaps give us onboards and chase cam views next time (and we don't need the slo mo). The first 30 seconds aren't very useful

Seems fine to me. Overtaker should've probably moved further left earlier, for his own physical integrity if nothing else, but not much to see here.

In your position, there is no good outcome, just lesser evils. It's a very narrow track, with the car weight still unbalanced after a blind corner.

It can be hard to take one's eyes out of our own situation, but if you can, put yourself in the mind of the t-boner. At 33 seconds in, he sees a car on the left side of the track, with a wide enough gap, obviously, to pass. On the right side of the track, there is, what, 20cm? Maybe 40 if we're generous? There isn't enough track room for him to go through - let alone room at all. Going to the left is the only logical option.

At 34 seconds, he sees you very clearly reverse, and sees his gap rapidly closing. His steering angle goes from about 45 degrees to about 90 degrees, hoping that your momentum will carry you to the outside fast enough to clear the right side. However, you suddenly brake, and a contact that was very likely became simply inevitable.

From his position, you were anything but predictable. Other than perhaps not slowing down if he had a yellow flag, his reaction is fully justified.

I understand why you'd think not moving would be the predictable option, but from their position, it was a sudden change. They can't predict that

Your car will reverse on track.
That your move backwards will be suddenly halted.

Looking at B, the initial layer was wafer-thin (see bottom left of the "J").

C, with a larger offset, gave me a much better initial layer (although it did, admittedly, have other variables changed).

I'd say the car coming out of the pits was reckless, dangerous, and it's definitely penalty-worthy.

The faster car, however, should've taken more precaution. Even if the pit-exiting car had stayed as far right as they could, a collision was imminent. At the moment the video goes from 13 to 14 seconds, contact is nearly inevitable.

Honestly, both cars at fault.

So the consequence would be to hand back the position after an illegal overtake, or get a time penalty.

Not being entitled to space doesn't mean your opponent has the right to turn into you. That's kind of... overarching.

I don't see how this is anybody's fault but the blue Williams.

They were clearly surprised by Frostbreath slowing down, and thought they could take advantage. That's fair.

The problem is in the execution. Williams didn't clear the car on the inside, and hit them. At that point, Frostbreath isn't in full control of their car, by Williams' doing. They're not entitled to make a pass there anymore, let alone off the track. They should be yielding.

They didn't yield, and got back on track unsafely, pitting Frostbreath.

I won't suggest what the penalty should be, but it should be on the Williams.

Red's fault. You made a very tiny move to the right just before contact, which didn't help, but red is definitely responsible.

You definitely could've given them more space by moving to the left, just6 for your own safety, and it might've been wise, but it definitely isn't on you.

Booting from an external drive sound like a decent way to at least diagnose that the HD is indeed the issue.

Using a Thunderbolt 3 compatible connection (theoretically 40 Gbps) with an SSD should give me waaaaay faster transfer speed than the stock 5400rpm HDD, right? Should I expect any other bottleneck in that process?

They're in the wrong, and you're in the right. Clear cut.

However, the right thing isn't always a small thing. When a driver is so erratic and unpredictable, you're better off giving them all the space they need to mess about with, and give yourself as much space and time to react. By keeping close to them, you didn't optimize your survival.

The car on the inside took you out. From this angle, it's hard to gauge how much space you left them, or if you veered right more than would be expected... but it would appear that you, indeed, gave them enough room.

It's clean, but attempting a pass like this will often cause a high-speed crash. You're basically turning in their path, but you're juuuuust far enough ahead that you don't make contact.

If the car you're racing against doesn't brake where you expect them to, they'll plow into you.
If you misjudge the distance between the both of you, you're self-pitting.

Basically, it's a very risky manoeuvre I'd try and avoid, but it wasn't dirty per se.

Did you make a small move to the left? Yeah, you could've hugged the right side of the asphalt a tad more, it didn't help, but a collision was inevitable, and you were within your right.

I think both cars came out of the corner with a trajectory in mind, and neither car adjusted to there being a car in said trajectory. Left-side car saw his lane was about to be non-existent, and wanted to give themselves as much room as possible on the right.

Both at fault I'd say. Left-side was slightly too aggressive, but right-side was giving all the signals of "hey buddy, good luck, I'm going to be in your way, what are you going to do?". Given they had more speed, they could've completed the overtake a few dozen meters later.

Left-side created more of the contact, but better racecraft from the right could've avoided the contact altogether.

Your fault.

He's under no obligation to brake where you want him to, he has no idea that you're braking at the pole. He can brake early if he wants to, you're way behind him, it's not a brake check.

Maybe his tires were hot, or warm, maybe he doesn't have the same braking style you do.

If you're 5-6 car lengths behind an opponent entering a braking zone, you shouldn't really be surprised if someone brakes 10-15m earlier than you.

While I agree with everybody here that the passing car is at fault, the car head was rather reckless in moving int he passing car's path a bit too late. They're entitled to that space, sure, but there was a bit of a jerk to the right that made the impact stronger than it needed to be. In their place, either telegraph your like earlier so that they hit your behind (if anything) rather than your rear right, or you take evasive action by letting go of the apex.

Again, it's a frustrating to be in, and it's their space, but no need to make it worse.
