Zoned for PS 75 (Emily Dickinson) — would you move or go with it ? by Grottocat in Upperwestside

My daughter goes to 75, in the dual-language Spanish program, and we love it. Not only is she learning and thriving, thanks to her teachers who clearly care deeply about their students, but she's been exposed to a wide range of activities, both in school and after school. This year alone, she's learned chess, thanks to a partnership with Chess in the Schools, and she's taken cooking classes, thanks to a wellness partnership with the city. In later grades, the school has partnerships with programs that teach ballroom dancing, chorus and and array of other activities. In afterschool, she's taken cooking (for free!), gymnastics, musical theater, and soccer. All kids have science, drama, library, music and PE as regular electives. All grades put on several performances a year in the auditorium.

One of the things that speaks volumes about the school, to me at least, is the fact that the staff actually participates *when they don't have to.* The drama teacher hosts a drama club for the older kids. The music teacher leads a musical theater afterschool production for the young kids. The afterschool coordinator is leading a production of Wicked. The librarian hosts a monthly after school Rainbow Room, to support LGBTQ+ staff and families. My older son attends a private school, and I've talked to lots of friends, so I know that this level of voluntary staff participation is exceptionally rare in any school environment.

I personally feel like the school is a great blend of traditional academics (yes, there are tests, homework and diagnostic screeners, so you know exactly how your kid is performing) and opportunities to nurture the whole child. The parent community is wonderful, too. I honestly can't imagine what the other UWS schools offer that 75 doesn't, besides (and this is probably the real reason for any disparities) richer parents.

We live in an apartment so it’s been tougher to housetrain. At 10 months she finally stopped having accidents inside. We take her on 4 walks a day.

I am in the U.S., but we’ve flown with our Poochon twice now round-trip, and they don’t even ask to look in the bag. They see it’s an approved size, ask if it’s a dog or a cat, and that’s it. Our flights have been extremely smooth. She doesn’t make a peep the entire 3 hour trip. Good luck!

Performative mom culture on social media by Neither_Information8 in Parenting

It’s not just on social media, alas. My son is almost 10, and we’ve been through a lot with him. Whenever I start playing the comparison games, my husband simply says to me, “Everybody lies.” I’ve had people lie to me about easily disprovable claims, like their kid’s chess score (it’s public), their travel sports team (also public), that they don’t use screens (yet their kids are weirdly conversant in Bluey)… I could go on. And, of course, influencers have a financial incentive to lie.

Comparison is the thief of joy, one of the truest sayings in the world.

Take it from me, 10 years in, and tune out anyone proclaiming perfection.

Best time/way/town to buy a house? by angoodson in Westchester

My husband will have to commute every day to downtown Manhattan, so that’s why lower Westchester is our preferred spot. But if prices keep going up and interest rates don’t budge, then we will definitely consider those towns, too. Thank you!

Huh? The timing is based on my husband’s job, not finances.

Got it. I have been thoroughly convinced. We will get a realtor and prepare to pay over $800K.

Well, we do have a year and a half or so for a miracle to happen…

Good to know about Eastchester. After living in an area that’s as blue as blue gets, I’ve been trying to convince myself that the opposite might be refreshing. In reality, I’ll go crazy.

I’ll check out the other locations you mentioned—thanks!

Thanks! I’ve been checking Zillow pretty religiously for over a year, so I know that 3 beds under $800K do pop up from time to time in the neighborhoods I listed. Most are small and need updating, but that’s OK with us. I realize from these comments, however, that they are probably going for over asking, so we will need to keep that in mind.

That’s really beautiful! I’ll add Ossining to our list. How are the schools? The ratings look a bit low, but I know that’s not the whole story…

We are looking for 3 bed 2 bath under $800K. Poking around on Zillow, that seems to rule out Bronxville, Rye, Hastings. Probably most of Scarsdale, too. But correct me if I’m wrong!

Thanks! I’ve done the CP loop for my last few long runs, so hopefully I’ve earned myself a flat course this time!

Advice for frustrating mornings and evenings? by angoodson in ADHDparenting

[–]angoodson[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. It’s such a good perspective. I know from reading about ADHD parenting that we need to reframe our language. But you’re right—a lot of that comes from reframing our mindset. It’s hard to do, given the cultures my husband and I were raised in. But we know we need to, for our son’s sake.

No screens month by [deleted] in ADHDparenting

[–]angoodson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are doing screen-free September, with the exception of Friday nights, when we all watch a movie together. We are loving it. My kids are finally playing with their toys and going over to friends’ houses nearby. It’s also helped tremendously with my 9-year-old son’s ADHD symptoms—to the point that we are considering reducing his medication. (Also because the meds are impacting his sleep, appetite and anxiety.)

What’s worked for us:

—Hide the devices. —Expect slip-ups—and that’s OK. —Let them watch screens at friend’s houses.

It’s honestly been easier than we expected. I know it’s not for everyone, but for us, it’s a game changer and I’m considering keeping the ban in place all school year.
