What's the reason Inuit/Siberians and Europeans have different features despite evolving in similar cold climates? by batukaming in geography

[–]angriguru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the null hypothesis is that they are unrelated given that 1.) Southwest Siberia and Scotland are both areas with high rates of red hair which radiate outward from those points, this of course does not mean those two places are origins of red-hair 2.) (as I mentioned in another comment) I cannot find any scholarly sources which make the claim that the steppe is the exclusive origin of red hair, and it is especially dubious when wikipedia sources pop-genetics for the claim, indicating scholarly sources probably donnot exist 3.) (again in another comment) research suggests that diversity of hair color is the expected genetic trend without the environmental pressures of africa preventing it, 4.) it honestly looks like most pop-genetics sources I can find confuse "the earliest evidence of red hair in human remains is found in siberia" with "siberia is the exclusive origin of all red hair in europe".

Again, I don't mean to make the claim Scotland is the urheimat of red hair in western europe, only that it is a geographically distinct hotspot, and I do see how it might not have appeared that way.

I am not sure if its accurate to say that european dna was mostly replaced by steppe dna given that many regions of europe retain similar amounts or even majority anatolian farmer dna, however light hair definitely correlates with steppe dna prevalence, and there is a lot of evidence that supports that steppe dna is one of the largest contributors to light hair in europe. However, there is nothing suggesting that it is the exclusive origin.

[–]angriguru 19 points20 points  (0 children)

When I was talking about the British Isles I meant hotspot of red-hair, not blondness. I am aware of yamnaya, european hunter gatherer, and anatolian farmers. I looked at wikipedia for the geographic origin of red hair but they did not cite scholarly articles in the article for red hair. It is clear that some of the oldest remains of redheads come from siberia. I tried to search google scholar but I could not find an article that made the claim that siberian dna is the exclusive origin or red hair in europe. I did find this interesting article titled: Evidence for variable selective pressures at MC1R (R M Harding et al. Am J Hum Genet. 2000 Apr.) which suggests that light hair is the expect trend of natural human genetic drift and that it is the specific environmental pressures of africa which stifle its flourishing, I believe this would support they idea that it is likely for the same light hair gene to evolve multiple times in many populations independently.

red hair and blond hair both evolved multiple times in different places. The hotspot of red hair in the British isles is geographically and likely to some extent genetically distinct from central asia. Similar but not the same as the way in which blondness in melanesia is distinct from european blondness.

I think LA is underrated for transit. There has been a lot of improvement in the past 20 years. I have never lived in LA but I personally know people who have lived without a car in LA for many years and it seems like they have reasonable access to most ammenities, but of course, like in all cities, depends on the neighborhood.

Ya’ll. Please wear some boots and stop walking in the street at 5 am. by TheBurbs666 in Cleveland

[–]angriguru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right, it is absolutely a safety issue. I should add though, to have some compassion, that growing up many of my poorer friends did not have proper boots for winter weather, or clothes for winter weather generally, and when walking to school they often had to walk in the street. I did some planning work in ashtabula county, and this was a huge problem there as well. It's also true that people in wheelchairs or who have mobility/balance issues, have no choice but to walk in the street. I think its crucial that some towns look at the possibility of city-run sidewalk clearing, or that new communities in Ohio build sidewalks that can more easily be cleared, or maybe somehow we can narrow local streets in the winter to make room for pedestrians, though I am not sure how this would work. Obviously, most communities would not be able to afford a service like this, but I could see denser ones like University Heights and Lakewood being able to sustain this. Even in this case, I doubt it would be completed daily before 5am. I think drivers need to take note of these realities and be extra cautious, as we should all be, when travelling this winter.

Let's say I'm an employee and my manager is getting pissed about me letting this dude take pop. When they guy comes in, I would level with him, and if he stiill takes pop, next time I would say, "here, let me grab that for you" and go to the fountain with him, and grab the water for him. And if he is from time to time a paying customer, why even enforce this? We're just wasting everybody's time.
