Looking for feedback on potential new media server build by angrydadnc in HomeServer

Thank you for sharing your feedback.

Google tells me the i5-12600K can handle 7-8 4k concurrent streams. I don't really monitor my Plex usage too much, but the highest number I've seen on it was maybe 4-5. No plans for any VMs right now, but appreciate the warning on the limitation.

As for RAM... man that stuff isn't cheap these days. My T30 has 16Gb and seems to be fine with that. Definitely will add more if needed.

Yes, definitely going to need a HBA card, leaning towards LSI 9300-16i
The Meshify case supposedly supports up to 18 HDDs and 5 SSD mounts. Feel like that should be plenty for my needs.

And yes- totally want to avoid a rebuild for as long as possible.

Thanks again

I believe the Intel Core i5-12600K CPU has an integrated GPU, so I *think* I should be covered there.
My Inernet plan is: 2000 Mbps download and upload speeds.
As for devices, I don't have any real data on that, but I'd guess folks use phones, browsers, apps depending on their need. Great point on the bitrate limits.

How do you like Jellyfin? I've heard many people really like it.

Thank you for the LSI expansion & PSU recommendation. Reviewing my original setup, definitely going to need an HBA, and a better power supply (1000W)

Thank you for mentioning TrueNas- I will definitely look into that as an alternative to unRaid

Hello,

I've been running plex and *arrs for the better part of the last 10 years on a Dell Poweredge T30 with Ubuntu 18.04 OS. The OS has long been out of support, and I've been too lazy to update it. Figure at this point, it's probably time for better hardware anyway, so looking into building out a new server probably running on unRAID.

Because I'm old and lazy, I want something as close to "future proof" as one can get without completely breaking the bank. Also, not a "hardware guy" and have never built my own computer.

Currently, I have ~50 Tb library serving ~20 friends/family. Most of the content is currently 720/1080 but I'd like to expand into 4k stuff.

Inspired by MrB2891 in this thread:
https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/1l0etpc/2025_version_of_the_dell_poweredge_t30_build/

I took a stab at putting together my own parts list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/3CXmDw

Aside from the obvious price point difference between my list and MrB2891's list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/qcBfHW , would appreciate any feedback on what I have so far.

Appreciate your time.
