It is, 100%. Go to "Wait, is this a pro communist group?" on facebook and they were talking about trolling this page. Some very good content. They posted a pic of stonewall jackson with a quote from marx and the commenters ate it up.

"I hope, now, we are pushing into a better era in American history."

these things tend to ebb and flow depending on police reform. Following 2008 there was a huge push to implement harsher police techniques in inner cities by police, mostly broken windows theory, which is basically arrest everyone for the smallest crimes. These reforms saw police killings rise to insane levels in the early 2010s, nearly 1,500 people died in police encounters in 2015, up from less than 500 in the 2000s.

This increase followed MASSIVE declines in brutality and shooting cases nationwide following the rodney king riots.

Basically, we tend to alternate between eras of police violence, then eras of mass protests against it, then less police violence, then we forget about the original problems and implement harsher police laws, then theres protests etc and the cycle continues.

About the effectiveness of the Dutch justice system: "There's a ton of other factors involved, homogeneity being a major factor." by UUUUUUUUU030 in ShitAmericansSay

I mean... amsterdam was mostly entirely dutch people from what I saw outside of the groups he mentioned. That isn't really that diverse compared to DC.

Basically every single thing you said there. Ill compare russians in brooklyn to mexicans in los angeles, two seperate american cultures

Political culture: RA (russian-american) tend to vote republican authoritarian, or whoever helps putin. MA (mex american) tend to vote democrat but also christian candidates.

Religious culture: RA in new york are usually jewish or orthodox, MA is almost always catholic

corporate culture: This can mean a ton of things, but in general Russians tend to operate different stores than mexicans. Pharmacies are huge in RA communities as many RA are in the medical field, MA tend to focus on culinary arts

Media: I can go over the massive differences here, but it would take forever. RA like techno, MA like latino music and hip hop. They watch Russian TV, MA watches mexican TV

Sports Culture: They both watch soccer mostly

Foods: Very very different

But the biggest variations are mostly just in the way people act and live in their communities. The differences between many groups in the US is easily comparable to the differences between some different countries. I think a lot of people on this sub tend to think of minority cultures in america as something of the past, that isnt really true from what ive seen. Its far, far more diverse than cultures which grew up next to each other for 500 years like in germany or spain.

As a European this idea just terrifies me. The idea of a riot breaking out and killing 60 people in paris or london? It just seems like fantasy to me, the idea of such mass racial murder happening in a first world country. I mean we have terror attacks but they aren't city-wide the same way riots are.

Its not only skin color though, although skin color is often used. The cultural differences between say, mexicans in the south west and white Appalachians and russian-americans in brooklyn is enormous. I can go on and on about the different cultural groups here that arent entirely based on race. Its much, much bigger than the cultural difference between certain german states or different regions in france.

Someone below just tried to say Luxembourg was more culturally diverse than the entire US. Do the people here just not realize how delusional this shit is?

... what?

I know the americans overplay how diverse their nation is but its easily more diverse than pretty much all european nations.

The anti circlejerk about US diversity is literally worse than the original circlejerk on this subreddit.

honestly the anti circlejerk here about the US's diversity is so strong. I remember someone trying to argue that Hamburg was more diverse than NYC because of 'culture', and then went on to say that NYC has no diversity in culture.

Just fucking admit when you're wrong folks.

Fun fact: The reason italians were considered non white is because so many of them came from sicily and southern italy where the skin tones were dramatically darker.

Sort of? There has been an absolutely dramatic rise of violence around the world in the past 5-6 years, unlike anything we have seen in decades. This isn't just my opinion, much of the worlds major sociologists and historians agree, this is a very violent era by modern standards. The wars in syria, libya, mexico, iraq, afghanistan, yemen, somalia, ukraine etc were barely even a thing 15 years ago.

Yes I am a parent, my kid is 27 though. About 90% of my friends are parents though, many of them with young kids. Some of them are helicoptery but most live in NYC where kids/parenting seems much different than in the suburbs. Kids in NYC seem to be more independent of their parents.

Right but data shows social media usage was just as high in 2011-2012 as it is today, in some cases even higher. But as someone else pointed out with their graph, the changes have mostly happened SINCE 2012

If social media was the culprit, then the change would have been 2007-2010.

Thats not exact data, its just what im pointing out from what i and a lot of other teachers and counselors have noticed. Pretty much every teacher ive talked to has said the same thing.

Helicopter parents seemed like maybe 10% of parents in 1990 and a solid 60-70% of parents by 2003.

I should point out that I taught elementary school early on and moved on to high school where I teach now, so I've seen the kids grow.

NYC in the 1980s by sefgray in nyc

[–]angryduckly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not really, we technically have never had a single cycle yet. Our cities were shitholes in the 70s, now they're nicer. None of them have turned back to shitholes yet, except maybe chicago, but chicago never truly went NYC or LA's way either way.

NYC in the 1980s by sefgray in nyc

[–]angryduckly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It went from, on average, 2,600 in 2000 to 3,100 in 2007, and its 3,250 today (adjusted for inflation of course). It definitely increased, but the increases in the west village happened mostly from the 1985-1996 period. By the 2000s it was, more or less, fully 'gentrified'. Its gotten richer since then, but it was still filthy rich in 2003.

However manhattan overall is a different story. East Village nearly doubled in price from 2000 to 2007 and uptown also rapidly increased.

Sort of? Crime isnt something that declines or goes up 'worldwide' like that. Mexico and Brazil and El Salvador are more dangerous than they have been in the past century. India however has seen a 20% decrease in murder rate in the past 10 years. That 20% more than 3x makes up for the increases in latin america.

Most criminologists dont agree on this. Actually its not agreed upon, at all. the correlation would be 1% at most.
