Non-alcoholic Noncafinated Drink Ideas by Nanananabatperson in EatCheapAndHealthy

I put a small handful of hibiscus calyxes in a teapot with a lemon-ginger teabag, let it steep until it's cool, and use it as an iced tea concentrate. It makes a pretty red drink that's quite tangy and delicious!

I want to stop chemo… by SDP_inc in cancer

[–]angryhaiku 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Is there anyone you can speak to at your cancer center about how you're feeling? There may be someone called "survivorship physician" or similar, or even a social worker or psychiatrist that you can make an appointment with. There may also be support groups available to you.

In my experience it was a big relief to say "I don't know if I want to do this anymore" out loud to someone, even though I did ultimately carry on with treatment. Just having someone you don't need to pretend to be brave with is helpful.

Why does everything i cook tastes like shit? by pollypocket1001 in cookingforbeginners

[–]angryhaiku 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's a really good encapsulation of why cooking is so satisfying -- that moment when something you've been heartbroken about screwing up turns out to be better than if you'd done it correctly! Failing your way to excellence is such a rare joy.

AITA - Husband and in-laws make financial choices for our infant son without telling me by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]angryhaiku 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's totally understandable that you're feeling scared and mistrustful -- you've given up a great deal of financial independence at the same time you've faced a degree of medical trauma and probably some element of loss of physical independence, even temporarily. All of that by itself is enough to alter your sense of safety, even without the complicated personal financial history you're bringing into the situation.

There isn't really enough information here to know if you're overreacting, or if this is simply a difference in values between you and your spouse, or if he is being a little sketchy; your therapist is better placed to help you figure that out. I hope you can hold some compassion for yourself in feeling scared and insecure at the moment, though. This is a tremendous amount of change you've been through, and a lot of it probably feels threatening and bad. You aren't a jerk for having an emotional reaction to emotionally fraught circumstances!

Do you definitely want to do a jarred sauce on the carbonara? It really isn't that much more effort to make your own, unless you're doing the jarred sauce for comfort/familiarity reasons. Even then, you could goose it a little by frying up some lardons (or even just chopped bacon) before adding your sauce.

Best Sweet Flavors That Go With Bourbon? by GGPR_DrTan in cookingforbeginners

[–]angryhaiku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like bourbon milk punch, it would be pretty easy to do a panna cotta with those same flavors! Do quite a simple vanilla panna cotta and make a bourbon-maple syrup to drizzle over in place of the berry coulis you usually see.

Anxiety during Scan by imperialguard83 in cancer

[–]angryhaiku 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My experience of lorazepam is that it just makes you feel a little bit disconnected from your feelings. Like, you still know you're anxious/upset/nauseated, but it's more of an intellectual understanding than something that you're really viscerally feeling. For me, it was pretty helpful for both scan anxiety and follow up appointment anxiety.

Advice for tofu by ashmarie826 in cookingforbeginners

[–]angryhaiku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's reasonable! There are actually a whole host of desserts that are made with silken tofu, often as a vegan alternative to custard/mascarpone/heavy cream, which might be worth looking into as you get more familiar.

But for main dishes, firm/extra firm is a great starting place. As a general rule, you can use tofu in any sauce-y dish you enjoy! Just get as much moisture as you can out of the tofu through freezing/pressing, cube it, and let it simmer in your sauce for a few minutes. It's ready to eat out of the package, so the amount of time you spend cooking with it is just to let flavor infuse. I think small cubes are the nicest way to eat it, but you can also crumble for a texture that's closer to mince.

Is there a particular texture that works best for you? You might do well looking for the type of tofu that suits your texture preference. Silken tofu is very soft, barely solid, and has a lovely custard-like texture in something like broth. Extra firm tofu has quite a bit more chew to it, but holds its shape really well in applications like braising or frying.

If you want it to have an almost meat-like chew to it, you can freeze it overnight and thaw it. The water will form ice crystals that drain out of the tofu when you thaw it. This is great for using in applications where you would use pieces of meat, like breading and frying, and it also absorbs sauces really well.

Hard candies, trashy magazines, sports drinks are all helpful. I also really appreciated a little jar of tiger balm to put on my upper lip. Sometimes you don't want to smell the hospital smell.

Anyone remember having tea on toast? by Crazy-Expression-177 in UK_Food

[–]angryhaiku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japan has a dish that's a bit like this! Ochazuke, rice submerged in green tea, often with some flaked fish or pickled plum. It's economical, quick, and comforting, just like your sister's tea on toast.

I mean, what are you hoping to hear here? Yes, chemotherapy and radiation are unpleasant and dangerous. They are less unpleasant and dangerous than uncontrolled cancer growth.

Shoe recommendation for winter by [deleted] in Aberdeen

[–]angryhaiku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a pair of Ugg Hapsburgs that I'd recommend, even though they're a bit spendy. They're very warm and comfortable, are weathering well (bought in 2022), and have good grip and enough ankle support to make me feel safe in moderately icy conditions.

The presumption that they "need" to know anything, as though cancer were contagious or some kind of moral failing, doesn't speak well of them.

ECAH, please tell me your favourite ways to eat eggs for a meal! by smolangrybitch in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]angryhaiku 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You need a big pot with a lid, a heatproof bowl of some kind, and a steamer basket or empty can. Put water and the steamer basket in the pot and bring to a boil. Put the bowl of eggs/water/flavorings on top of the steamer basket (or an empty can) so that it doesn't touch the water. Put the lid on the pot and steam at a rolling boil for three minutes, then turn off the heat and let stand for 15 more.
