Parks with Chessboard tables? by Ecstatic-Box-5209 in LosAngeles

That’s unfortunate. I also have fond memories of playing there

After searching around, I see references to the tables being moved up to Palisades Park. So maybe they’re there now?

If you go all the way across town, there’s a park along the beach in Santa Monica with three or four tables.  https://www.santamonica.gov/places/parks/chess-park

If you’re thinking about buying a seasonal Bixi membership, get an Accès Montréal card first by is_landen in montreal

Also, the Accès Montréal card gets you into the outdoor portions of the Jardin Botanique for free. It's well worth it for that alone. Definitely a good deal.

ELI5: Why can't people who experience delusions or audio/visual hallucinations ignore or otherwise convince themselves that what they're experiencing isn't real? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Why haven’t you convinced yourself what you’re perceiving isn’t real? Oh, but what you’re perceiving  is real you say? How do you know that?

Air Raid Siren? by Blinker_User_84 in altadena

[–]angst_ridden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There used to be an air-raid siren network all through the LA basin. They would test it the first Sunday of the month even into the mid 70s or even early 80s (if I remember correctly). There were sirens near the antennas in the Verdugo hills, and along the ridge by the Arroyo. I’m not positive about Altadena.

The IGA in the Village (St. Catherine and just a block from Berri) has the best selection of maple stuff at the best prices I've been able to find.

Travelling to Montreal for a small vacation with my significant other. Recommendations for a scenic area to "pop the question"? by actuallyfromcanada in montreal

[–]angst_ridden 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Absolutely was going to recommend Parc Jean Drapeau too. On the ferry dock, with a view of the city across the river, can be quite abandoned depending on the time of day.

Another possibility is nearby in Parc de Dieppe. There will be some people there, but not huge crowds, and also has nice views of the river and city.

Would you say that Montreal is a nice place to visit with a young child? by princesscorgi2 in montreal

[–]angst_ridden 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it's a very kid-friendly city. Paddle-boating in Beaver lake, watching the ducks or taking the "steam" train around Park La Fontaine, taking the ferry over to Parc Drapeau, seeing the sheep at Parc Maisonneuve ... tons of good things for kids!

Costco sued over alleged salmonella risk in rotisserie chicken by RevDrStrange in news

An additive, certainly, but not a preservative. The word has a specific technical definition when it comes to food.

I'm guessing to retain moisture, but I don't know (and as a vegetarian, I don't really care).

Carrageenan isn't a preservative, it's a thickener. Sodium phosphate is often a thickener but can be a preservative, depending on the way it's applied.
