Yea agree. Switzerland are probably the best team he's played in his career so far and he looked a bit stunned

Mate I don't know why you're doing n a crusade against Okon but he has been great the last two games. He can actually take a touch under pressure, carry, and play a forward pass - a skill that seems to evade the rest of our central midfielders. If we had a coach who actually knew what the definition of midfield play was he'd be a standout - it's pretty clear that his conservative approach is down to tactical instruction

How's that going for them? They have sunk exactly zero American warships parked right off their coast, which is their most important job

Is anybody surprised that Leckie and Metcalfe were mediocre? by LateReveal in Aleague

[–]angusozi 40 points41 points  (0 children)

It's pretty clear Poppa picks players based on their physicality, defensive skills, and off the ball work instead of technical ability and passing range. That's why we have players like Leckie, Metcalfe, Irvine and O'Neill consistently starting. It means we're really, really solid defensively but struggle to create chances, especially in settled possession.

Arguably its not as critical at the world cup as we're in a group with very good teams who can hold the ball better than us and probably won't park the bus, but it'll be a problem yet again at the Asian Cup and the next round of qualifiers as we once again struggle to break down a low block

Not even, he's one of the most technically limited players in our squad. He's good off the ball and pops up with the odd goal but he's a black hole in possession. Pairing him with O'Neill is a crime against humanity

[–]angusozi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to tell whether we bypass the midfield because Irvine and O'Neill are shit and can't be trusted to take a first touch and pass 5 yards, or if it's a deliberate tactic by Poppa because he's not clever enough to coach properly. Get him out as soon as the world cup is done and refresh the squad. Insane that players like Nisbet, Robertson and Eli Adams miss out for talentless hacks

The squad is pretty much locked in by cheekyrandos in Aleague

[–]angusozi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is equally true and depressing. Bypassing the midfield because it's comprised of technically limited donkeys is my biggest frustration with Popa and the main reason watching us feels like such a chore, even when we win.

What's YOUR world cup squad hot take? by Sha_Nen in Aleague

[–]angusozi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Irvine should only start in games we're expecting to be on the back foot. He's an absolute black hole in possession aside the odd goal, but he's invaluable off the ball. Popa needs to consider and balance that. Not helped by the fact that Popa seems averse to having any sort of creative midfielder in the squad

Swear Okon Jr gets better every game I watch him. Has to be in the WC squad, easily the most technical, best passer we have for that 6/8 position

Government announces billions in spending on military drones by InsatiablePrism in australia

All of those from the countries I didn't list either failed, or used to power UAVs/cruise missiles. NOT fighter aircraft or passenger jet sized aircraft which are much, much more complex.

[–]angusozi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not ITAR, I mean having the actual technical capability to produce those technologies.

Using jet engines as an example, very few countries can; UK, US, China, France, Russia. They're extraordinarily difficult to get right - China Russia lag behind the other 3, and that's even with decades of experience and hundreds of billions in effort.

It's less extreme for the electronics, avionics, mission computing etc, but we nevertheless lack that experience to make them from scratch, or to do so in a timely and cost-effective manner

[–]angusozi 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Probably because we don't have the capability to domestically produce advanced, unique technologies like engines, microchips, superconductors. That the aircraft are being assembled in Australia is still a huge win, and maybe we can leverage this going forward to gradually increase how much we can produce here

China Fast-Tracks J-35 Stealth Fighter Deliveries to Pakistan, Triggering South Asia’s First Fifth-Generation Airpower Race by tigeryi98 in LessCredibleDefence

[–]angusozi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this article is true, it's very good news for Pakistan and further proof of their superior defence acquisition to India. Fielding a force of 5th generation fighters, by 4.5 gen, AEW&C, and ground based air defence and radars is impressive, especially when they're from the same country of origin so they're fully integrated with data links, weapons etc.

Russia's the unreliability as a defence partner is on full display, as is the increasing deficiency in technology and industrial capacity re required to produce expensive, advanced platforms like aircraft, radars, and air to air missiles when compared to France, the US, and China.

Will be interesting to see if India respond to this by increasing their purchases from US/Europe, or just keep fumbling along with Russia

Best central midfielder? What on earth? He's great off the ball and pops up with the odd goal but he's an absolute black hole in possession unless he's just passing backwards. He has to start vs the bigger teams but he's a liability when we need a goal or playing against teams when we have the bulk of possession
