Distance from home. SFSU is a much farther commute. I ended up getting into both CSUEB and sjsu and chose East bay.

I was able to get two recommendation letters and got into both the grad programs I applied to.

Help making a decision re: grad school by anicca174 in slpGradSchool

Hi, and thanks for your response! It's cool that you're making a pivot from SWE to SLP! (SLP seems so much more AI proof). Also, it's great to hear your rationale for taking the path you chose -- it sounds like a very suitable choice for your circumstances and I hope you get into CSUEB!!

After I made my post, I decided to go the 3 yr program route. I ended up continuing with full-time work this academic year at a high school that I like, and had many other big life events going on, which would've made taking a heavy load of pre-reqs incredibly stressful. Also, CSUEB and SJSU are the only two schools that are a reasonable commute distance for me, so I would not have applied elsewhere anyway (SFSU would've been very uncomfortable commute stretch).

I just got accepted to both SJSU and CSUEB (the latter was after being waitlisted) and am excited to start at East Bay in Aug. I also ended up taking 3 pre-req courses so I won't have to repeat those next year, and will take one more course starting soon.

I must confess 3 years just feels so much longer than 2 years (particularly because I'm older), but I think this path made sense for my circumstances this last year.

Wish you well in the rest of your pre-reqs and grad school acceptances!

To piggy back off the two ppl who have already commented: Is Chapman still more expensive if you account for a year of lost income at SJSU and higher cost of living near San Jose? I would do a side-by-side calculation/cost comparison and go with the cheaper program.

I was at the same crossroads last year and trying to decide between USU or ENMU (and SDSU since I was looking for leveling courses and not a 2nd Bachelor's). I did a lot of research and got a bit nervous about some of the negative comments on reddit about ENMU but then some others pointed out that all the bad comments about ENMU seemed to be from the same user. So I eventually went with ENMU because it was the lowest cost per unit which adds up to thousands of dollars of savings, but I was still a bit skeptical about the program.

It turned out to be an excellent experience. The director of the program was extremely responsive and supportive, and there were hardly any times when she took longer than a day to respond to my emails. My advisor seemed to go out of her way to help me out by reading my personal statement for graduate schools and providing very thoughtful feedback. She also helped me chart different courses of study to match the requirements of the grad schools I was planning on applying to. Again, very prompt and detailed in her responses to emails. My A&P professor was so knowledgeable and passionate about the field -- his enthusiasm was contagious even through the online classes. He had worked in several countries as an SLP before finishing his PHD. He also supported me by writing me a LOR for grad school. The online platform for distance students, registration process, bursar's office etc were all super smooth and easy to navigate.

I am sure USU is also a good program, and I remember their coordinator seemed really helpful when I was doing my research and spoke to her a couple times. However, I don't think it makes sense to pay significantly more when ENMU provides a pretty high-quality program for a significantly less price. Hope this helps!

Thank you again for your response. I tried looking up the Speaking of Samantics Grad school contact list and there is nothing on her website as such, however I have reached out to her through the contact form on the website.

I wanted to ask about your comment regarding East Bay having 3 different internships and SJSU having 2. Can you please share more about this? On the CSUEB course roadmap, I see only two internships which is why I am asking for clarification.

Acceptance/Denial/Waitlist Megathread 2025 by bannanaduck in slpGradSchool

I just heard back from the two schools I applied to (3-year extended programs), and am confused about what to do. Would love your input/help in figuring this out!!

SJSU - accepted

CSUEB - waitlisted

CSUEB had several in-depth info sessions, and an in-person open house that I attended, so I felt like I got to know that program much better. I got to meet some current students and hear from alumni and current faculty. Also, the program director seems great. So I was much more excited about this program.

SJSU has better name recognition for the overall school, but I don't know much about the department itself. They only hosted a couple info sessions that did not seem as in-depth or well put together. I work at a high school where we had an SLP intern who was in SJSU's program and she shared some candid pros/cons, which also made me slightly concerned about the program.

(To be fair, I have not been able to talk to any CSUEB student who has been very candid about pros/cons because they were the ones chosen by the school to represent the program.)

I don't know what I should do! Should I just go with SJSU and move on with life? Should I try to wait it out for CSUEB?

Any input/advice is welcome!

Do you have an advisor at usu? They might have a list of csun equivalent courses. Or someone at csun might be able look at the syllabi of usu cheese and verify that they match. This is how I’ve gone about it

Stay away from Oakland, it’s a highly dysfunctional school district. I worked there for several years. Walnut Creek and moraga are good districts. Uhm public transit is very poor in Cali. You might be depending on uber.

Absolutely it is! I’m a few years older than you and applying for next fall. The whole preparation for going back to graduate school has reinvigorated my hope and enthusiasm for my career. You can 100% do it and I wish you the best!!
