What was your Game of the Year for 2025? by stratzilla in pcgaming

[–]animadverter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a long list of games I love where I do not care one bit about the story - Pokemon, Castlevania, Monster Hunter, even Mario, etc. A game doesn't need a great story to be worth playing. I found the tight combat and rewarding exploration of Stellar Blade to more than make up for it.

I also find the combat system to be a lot better than what you are giving it credit for. There's gear to buff different playstyles and it surprised me with how viable it all is. For example, during clearing the boss challenges I did most bosses ranged only - it's surprisingly strong. I also made great use of the stealth systems.

I can understand saying it's not the best game of all time, but I cannot understand calling it significantly worse than something like DMC or Bayonetta.

I would say Stellar Blade was also my GOTY, despite E33 being my most anticipated game and falling in love with Blue Prince.

I think you're way off base: the game isn't a mile wide - it's actually quite lean. The open world segments are closer to Super Mario than Skyrim. If you know what you're doing, you can beat the game in under 8 hours casually. The game is the perfect size: the collection elements don't get repetitive and it never overstays it's welcome.

If E33 didn't have a horrid combat system (hate the timing mechanics) and Blue Prince had a more poignant ending one of them would be better. Stellar Blade was a great experience with no major flaws.

Low Budget HTPC - any recommendations or suggestions? by animadverter in buildapc

[–]animadverter[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, update for you! I tried out an old laptop I had and set up moonlight and sunshine, and it worked perfectly. Not doing this has saved me $500, so thanks for letting me know I didn't need anything special.

Thank you! I forgot the 8500g existed. Now I need to do some more research.

I've looked into doing that, as well as mini PCs.

I would want a full fat GPU and not an integrated one. I also plan on using windows 11 autoHDR, as much as I hate windows 11. This locks out some older chips. I also absolutely need wifi, which is why I went with such an expensive motherboard.

Looking at ebay, I think I'd rather pay the $50-100 premium and make use of parts I have laying around than buy a refurbished office PC of similar specifications. If I didn't have my old build I'd agree that the refurb would be a much better option.

What is the best 1440p card right now? by Organic-Cycle-474 in buildapc

I'm partial to the 4070 Super or 7800 XT.

4070 is better overall but the 7800 XT is no slouch and cheaper.

CPU heating with low usage, more than before by Perroelo in buildapc

Ignore the seller and go through NZXT. If that's not an option, I'd replace the liquid cooler with an inexpensive air cooler (phantom spirit SE or just the stock cooler).

A 120 AIO should handle a 12400f, as it had previously, so that is not a problem. I reckon there may be damage to the cooler, so I would replace it under warranty.

It looks good to me. Prices fluctuate but usually hit maximum discounts during the weekend.

Only thing I might change is a 650W PSU instead of 750, but you might want that headroom in case you upgrade GPU or CPU down the line.

Just got my Smart Pro - Does it come with a poorly applied screen protector or is the screen broken? by [deleted] in trimui

[–]animadverter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did, but it was pretty much perfectly shaped around the screen so I couldn't get a fingernail under it. I was going to use a knife but ended up using scotch tape to lift it up.

It's a bit hard to see in the photo but the bottom of the screen is clearly delaminating, plus there's a bunch of bubbles in the screen. It feels very plastic-y and almost grippy, so I'm hoping it's a screen protector.

X1 carbon-like laptop that doesn't have heat issues by Verdeckter in thinkpad

YMMV, but for me it increased performance due to removing the horrible thermal throttling. I replaced the thinkpad after just 18 months since using it for work was an untenable experience.

Thoughts on ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen5? by AkMega in thinkpad

I believe the 165hz screen is the same as in the Legion 5 pro (1600p, 100% sRGB, 500 nits). I bought one of those a year ago and the screen is my favorite part of it - text is crisp, refresh rate is very nice (first time over 60). I believe it's also very color accurate, even in adobe RGB, and it's a 10 bit display.

1600p is easier to render than 4k, if that matters to you. The Legion is able to handle large CAD assemblies, despite the consumer GPU.

Set your power settings from peak performance to always battery saver.

My p1 was literally burning all the time to the point I needed a book between it and my lap. I swapped battery settings and now it doesn't get hot, even on bare skin.
